Divine Comedy, The - Norman And Norma Lyrics

Norman and Norma
Got married in Cromer
April 1983
It could've been warmer
But Norman and Norma
Were happy as they'd ever been
They flew to Mallorca
And swam in the water
It felt just like having a bath
The piña coladas
Hit Norma harder
And she fell into bed with a laugh
And she said

Oh, Norman
It's never ever felt like this before
And oh, Norman
I've never really known your kiss before
Oh no, Norman, Norman

Norman and Norma
Had three lovely daughters
Nadia, Nora and Eve
The firm Norma worked at
Wouldn't take her back
After maternity leave
They dreamt of Mallorca
But couldn't afford to go
On Norman's salary
So they went to Cromer
Got double pneumonia
And Norma remember when
She used to say

Oh, Norman
It's never ever felt like this before
And oh, Norman
I've never really known your kiss before
Oh no, Norman, Norman

20 years on and
The children have gone and
They both had a bit of a loss
They've tried salsa classes
And growing tomatoes
But nothing is getting them off
Then one day in Clacton
There's a re-enactment
Of Normans and Saxons and this
Gets their juices flowing
Before long they're going
And fighting like it's 1066
And she says

Oh, Norman
It's never ever felt like this before
And oh, Norman
I've never really known your kiss before
Oh no, Norman
Oh no, Norman, yeah

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, Norman
It's never really felt like this before
And no, Norman, Norman (Norman)

  29. D.... C....

I’m so unsure on this but I know everyone needs it stuck in their head!

  30. l.... ....

About the norman and saxon battle, there's an hidden and growing little sound more digital than the rest, like in some old videogames, like in zelda when you find a sword, or maybe like in Defender of the crown (Saxon vs Norman) on Amiga/Atari

  31. S.... C....

Idk why I acc love this

  32. J.... R....

    Reminds me of bowie

  33. E.... C....

The way he crafts pathos through his lyrics out of the mundane events of normal life takes stunning skill, he's a special guy neil.

  34. A.... W....

    A.... F....

@edmund184 ..Jeeze, as a fellow Celt, I`m utterly ashamed that I did not know that...blush blush !!
Iv`e heard them being described as British and even English for years, but they are from Enniskillen.
That`s just lifted them to another level, thanks for educating me :))

  71. J.... ....

Why does this song make me upset? I really feel for them both. I suppose it’s just life, blink and it’s gone. Make the most of everything and everyone you have, that’s the message I get from this lovely song.

  72. R.... W....

    Love it a lot

  73. N.... n....

You're right. I heard this on the radio just a couple of days ago, and it's cropped up on my recommended - so 'click'!

  78. .... ....

  79. t.... ....

Wooooooooow this songs cringe. AWFUL lyrics tellin some bullshit story just so it can all rhyme, sang in a soppy as shit way and they chose the worst possible names for this couple on some brother and sister type shit, just wow.

    t.... ....

What a really sad mind you must hae son, maybe you should stick to you y-box or whatever they are....and divven't mek stupid comments aboot summick ye knaa nowt aboot!Really sad.....

    t.... ....

Jesus Christ learn to spell and/or type. And wtf is a y-box? Funny because music is the 1 thing i know a lot about, this Norman and Norma track is obviously parody and any one taking it seriously needs a slap.

  80. B.... B....

Love this, I wish they would do a cover of the doors touch me.

  81. n.... ....

first time I have heard cromer in a song like it

  82. S.... P....

Wow!! Just WOW!! Love it!! I want to be Norman one day.

  83. T.... W....

The male Victoria wood meant as a compliment xxx

  84. T.... R....

Im looking in despair at the absolute shit line-up at Glastonbury and realise I must be in a different universe. If anybody deserved to be headlining on Sunday night Neil and his band does. Apparently this world doesn't seem to appreciate truly intelligent, joyful music!!! Then again, maybe the NPC's in this crappy sim game dont even care.

  85. D.... b....

Dextra been playing this song for last few days been a dublin band .. what a fuckin tune we love it rock on the lads ballynuns dextra

  86. i.... m....

  88. C.... K....

    Beautifully British.

  89. T.... B....

What a lovely song !! Heard it for the first time on the Robert Elms show a few weeks ago (BBC Radio London). Gets more and more enjoyable every time
I listen to it. (I am embarrassed to say that prior to that I had never heard of Neil Hannon).

    T.... B....

Well, he has written many, many more songs which are (subjective, I know) much better than this.

  90. F.... V....

    Absolutely love this

  91. P.... T....

Listened to this on radio 2 today for the first time Absolutely Brilliant

    P.... T....

Me too, on Jo Whiley's show. It's brilliant

    P.... T....

I also heard this first on radio 2... Radio 2 has gone a bit crap recently, probably due to it aiming for a younger audience, but it still comes up with some great tunes.. this being one of them.

  92. T.... G....

Just heard this on the radio a few days ago and again today. I found this song very interesting and it peaked my interest, fell in love on the second time of hearing and now cant stop lostening. After exploring their past music, and as the comments suggest, every few years a new generation of listener has the exact same reaction during their listens to previous songs! Very Interesting! Can't wait to hear more of their music catalogue! Got very emotional at this song it reminds me of my parents relationship and my life I guess. I'm a 26 year old bloke btw!

  93. u.... ....

    Best song of the year

  94. B.... ....

What a lovely horse he is,and from the North too.😀

  95. D.... D....

    Beautiful story telling.

  96. K.... K....

THIS MAN is one of the most underated singer songwriters EVER. He deserves this to go to Number 1 GLOBALLY!!!

    K.... K....

    Utterly brilliant!

  97. A.... B....

absolutely classic Divine Comedy... catchy tune, and the genius lyrics. Neil Hannon is a storyteller of the highest order!
