Dispatch - The General Lyrics
there was a decorated general with
a heart of gold, that likened him to
all the stories he told
of past battles, won and lost, and
legends of old a seasoned veteran in
on the battlefield, he gained
respectful fame with many medals
of bravery and stripes to his name
he grew a beard as soon as he could
to cover the scars on his face
and always urged his men on
but on the eve of a great battle
with the infantry in dream
and wrestled with its meaning
he awoke from the night
just to tell what he had seen
and walked slowly out of his tent
all the men held tall with their
chests in the air, with courage in
their blood and a fire in their stare
it was a grey morning and they all
wondered how they would fare
till the old general told them to go home
He said: I have seen the others
and I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting
and I've seen their mothers
and I will no other
to follow me where I'm going
So, take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
Take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
go now you are forgiven
but the men stood fast with their
guns on their shoulders not knowing
what to do with the contradicting orders
the general said he would do his own
duty but would extend it no further
the men could go as they pleased
but not a man moved, their eyes gazed straight ahead
till one by one
they stepped back and not a word was said
and the old general was left with his
own words echoing in his head
he then prepared to fight
He said: I have seen the others
and I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting, no
and I've seen their mothers
and I will no other
to follow me where I'm going
So, take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
Take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven, go
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven, go
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven
go now you are forgiven
(you got to be, got to be, got to be, got to be, got to be here)

3:21 is the PERFECT inspiration for writing the redemption arc of a character who is truly repentant.
Does anyone remember this song in a ipod touch game? It was probably around 2010 and was similar to gta
All who disliked, I’m coming for you, ya heartless pampered shits.

Why am I discovering this AWESOMENESS, until 2019?! Grateful, don't get me wrong, but still... Better late than never, I guess.

Listened to this on the beach in North Carolina in 2006. Drinking bricks of Miller Lite for whatever reason. Good times on the beach
Haven't heard this since '05/'06 my neighbor, Johnny, would play this late summer nights, till I one day asked him about the music and he gifted me a mix CD/mp3. Miss those chill summer nights, when you can think and feel deep. Lovely, meaningful music!
“Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile, tiny shells
Drifting in the foam
Little soldier boy
Come marching home
Brave soldier boy
Comes marching home”
-Iroh, *Avitar, The Last Airbender*
So many good memories with this song while spending time with my friends

Square up nerd
Never heard of this band or this song, and it just randomly started playing in my suggested feed. I'm glad it did!
Intro sounded immediately like Slash’s Hey Joe Hendrix cover
Captain America
All wars are based on lies.
Sometimes I love YouTubes recommended. I cant believe I haven't heard this before! It's awesome!

2020 now
Why TAKE this down
I was playing payback 1 and this came on
beautiful
Great song but what if the fight is worth fighting? Having learned by experience no soldier would leave his general or any comrade to fight a battle alone. The bond of brothers in arms is stronger than the will to save yourself. Again great song but I find it to be a sad song
Most wars are fought for unjust reasons. Comradery is a double edged sword because whilst it does help soldiers get through the atrocities they are likely to see, it can make them feel guilty for questioning things. It's not sad to suggest we should stop killing, it's sad to suggest killing is the only/best option.

Thank you. Legend.
I know you can always find it on google but this was handy. God bless
Love this song. Gives me chills
This makes me sad. “You’re young men, you must be living” = best lyric.
I turned a friend in the military onto the Tragically Hip, he gave me a burned disc that said dispatch. I was for once, impressed.✖️🔘➖💲➕🎶🎵➰
This song helped me through my dark times, fresh out of the military with a debilitating spine injury, medically retired at 22 years old, and on pain meds for the rest of my life. I hit rock bottom when I lost feeling in my leg. This song took me through memory lane, listened to it with my best friend before he went to Afghanistan, and when he left I was lost. This song kept me through. Then we both got out the service, moved into together, I had a daughter with my current girlfriend, he moved out. We are brothers, but I sure do miss having someone who knew me before life/the military beat me up. Before I felt helpess and hopeless. But we talk daily, and we're both doing well, he's my daughters Nino, and he showed me this song. Love that guy, closer to him than my real brothers.
Appreciate your service
Probably should have saved yourself the misery and not joined the military
Anthony Carranza Thank you for your service.God bless you and your family!
Anwar Stanzi I take that statement as a sign of disrespect. His sacrifice made it so you can enjoy life comfortably. Not everyone is selfish and spares their misery
awesome love it
I'm glad to see this song getting more and more views as time goes on! Really underappreciated song!
This is so beautiful, and it never gets old!
This song makes me think of the Christmas Truce of WW1, when British and German soldiers emerged from their trenches during Christmas Day. For one day, the fighting stopped, and the men sang, drank, and played soccer together. The next day, the fighting resumed. One soldier wrote in his diary of that day: "Never was I so keenly aware of the insanity of the war." I have seen the others, and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting...
Last Man Standing?!??
I thought it was? Pretty sure there is a few direct quotes in the lyrics from a recovered journal. Now I gotta look this up again.
Awesome story! I love learning little tidbits like this... Such a powerful story, yet so short.
Another phenomenal anti war novel is Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo.
Good comment!
And yet people still kill other people cause someone told someone else too
Horrible
I respect your opinion and such, but why do you dislike the song?
An awesome song, that is all I can say.
Strange how groups like this slightly stupid OAR the dirty heads never really took off huge like not many people Canada no groups like this. I guess it’s like the hip the trews groups like that. Like talent means fuck all in the music world
I was listening to Trampled by Turtles radio on Pandora and this came on. Haven’t heard it in many years but I will be having it for breakfast daily. Made me think of my children and the choices one makes on their journey through life. To my babies... You are young and you must be living go now you are always forgiven 🙏✌️
Such a beautiful comment!! And also, I love Trampled By Turtles!!
The Troll population is at 310. Trolls like mating to this song. Who in their right mind would dislike this song? It brings me back to my early 20s when life was so much simpler.
Listening to this song on a 10 strip rn and the inter dimensional beans I’m chillin with fuck with it
Amazing song Dispatch come back
BANG BANG
This song has always given me chills.
This band was so far ahead of their time.
<3 Anyone recommend songs like this?
Love this song...prolly my favorite Dispatch tune....I liked it so much i learned to play it on guitar...not too tricky...and a blast to play! Great band..one of those rare bands that you can just turn on in ANY situation, with ANY group of people, regardless of their musical preference...Dispatch just fits in every music collection for any individual. They're impossible to not like.
i see...
This song was always played to my bunk at camp and it brings back so many memories
Benjamin Weisman Gfc
Benjamin Weisman It was a huge hit at my summer camp in New Hampshire
Amazing distraction from bad attitudes
Whoever wrote the lyrics to this song is a fucking genius....Plain and simple...The lyrics are on another level....Its absolutely insane
This song makes me think of my friend Pete Confalone who died of an overdose in 2006. He was the first friend I ever had to who died. His funeral was standing room only. We loved this song we knew all the words and used to belt it in his old Buick. At his funeral his sister referenced this song and ended his eulogy “go now you are forgiven”
Blessings bro 🙏
Dangit another friend lost. Anyone who loves this song is one of mine. But there are other worlds at least
Your a great friend. Thanks for sharing. Honestly very touching
Sorry friend for your loss.
Next time you see him ( and you will ) give him a big O hug.
My friend Joe died of a drug overdose months after my brother took his life, the line "go now you are forgiven" repeating is powerful lyrics
I grew up on this song with my friends, one of the first truly good song I learned on the guitar.
I hadn't heard this song in 15 years until a few hours ago at the bar. I missed it!
This song is so good
Taking responsibility of getting this song to 1m views.
This shit is money
Thank you for this song
In 4 school homework assignments
I agree with the moral of the story here. It holds with the same story as all quite on the western front. A soldier who was brought up to think he was different, learns thats they are just like him and are suffering just like him.
Excuse my French but all 479 of y'all who disliked this song can suck it.
I haven't listened to this in years. Reminds me of the hopeful person I used to be.
270 people missed the like button
