Diana Ross - Love Child Lyrics

Tenement slum

You think that I don't feel love
But what I feel for you is real love
In other's eyes I see reflected
A hurt, scorned, rejected

Love child, never meant to be
Love child, born in poverty
Love child, never meant to be
Love child, take a look at me

I started my life in an old, cold run down tenement slum
My father left, he never even married mom
I shared the guilt my mama knew
So afraid that others knew I had no name

This love we're contemplating
Is worth the pain of waiting
We'll only end up hating
The child we maybe creating

Love child, never meant to be
Love child, (scorned by) society
Love child, always second best
Love child, different from the rest

Mm, baby (hold on, hold on, just a little bit)
Mm, baby (hold on, hold on, just a little bit)
I started school, in a worn, torn dress that somebody threw out
I knew the way it felt, to always live in doubt
To be without the simple things
So afraid my friends would see the guilt in me

Don't think that I don't need you
Don't think I don't wanna please you
No child of mine 'll be bearing
The name of shame I've been wearing

Love child, love child, never quite as good
Afraid, ashamed, misunderstood

But I'll always love you
I'll always love you
I'll always love you
I'll always love you
I'll always love you
I'll always love you

Just wonder if Miss Diana would had been more humble like the late Levi Stubb he demanded we are the Four Tops period!!!! He didn't want Levi n the Four Tops!!! If it would have stayed The Supremes!!!! Maybe it might had been a better outcome for the beautiful Flo!!! I guess it's all in the past!!! Singing beautiful up there n heaven!!!!

    S.... P....

This woman did not have the Adantes sing on this or any other. Its just she was such a card and thrived on hurting people. She made it to the top .The skinny kid from the projects made it. The men she slept with . The husbands. The diva, Miss Motown could have told Berry we are a unit. Not this woman she thrived on being a bi... And did not care who feelings she hurt, a true diva.

    Diana Ross -- lead vocals
The Andantes: Jackie Hicks, Marlene Barrow, and Louvain Demps -- background vocals*
The Funk Brothers and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra -- all instrumentation
    Joe Messina – guitar
    Earl Van Dyke – keyboards
    James Jamerson – bass guitar
    Richard "Pistol" Allen – drums
    Jack Ashford – percussion, glockenspiel
    Paul Riser – string arrangements

*As was nearly always the case on singles released under the "Diana Ross & the Supremes" name, Mary Wilson & Cindy Birdsong do not perform on the record -- Motown session singers The Andantes performed the background vocals.

@Dale McNamee I loved that 'Andantes' sound.... They made every Motown group sound good.... They blended very nicely with Diana, Levi Stubbs,Martha Reeves...all of them. They gave the music that Motown sound.

    T.... ....

    @Damo Trent
Their voices were as important as the instruments, particularly on the "What's Going On" album tracks : " What's Happening Brother ? ", "Save The Children ", " God Is Love "... They were fantastic !

    T.... ....

@Dale McNamee agreeeeeeeed 10000%>>>>>>>.👏👏👏👏 When the Andantes came thru at the top of the track but in back of the lead singer on the record it was hypnotizing!!!... I'm a huge fan....Thanks for really promoting the fact that the Andantes were on Marvin's masterpiece work.... You can really hear their art on that album.. Just exquisite sounding females....truly a special sound.

    T.... ....

@Dale McNamee Dale, you made me go back to listen to Marvin's 'What Going On' tracks....I can hear the background on Mercy Mercy Me....it's haunting....that's the sound I recall on the greatest Motown songs (Bernadette, Standing In the Shadows of Love, etc....)....Good Gawd....you putting me in my Motown mood......STOP IT. 🤣😂😂👍

    @Damo Trent 👍👏😄

I remember when this song came out. It was made to counter the criticism that The Supremes were abandoning the black community that in their successful attempt to crossover they were sounding too white. That they were too pop. And I do mean the criticism was heavy and persistent. "Love Child" was a big hit. Including on black radio. The Supremes regained their black fan base which was steadily slipping away. I remember the time well.

    j.... b....

A bit more. This song came out in '68. In 67 it was "Reflections" and " The Happening/" Those two songs were always cited as the "whitening" of The Supremes. "Love Child" was a response to the anger in the black community about how they were sounding more and more in crossing over.

Exactly fifty years ago today on November 24th, 1968; "Love Child" by Diana Ross and the Supremes moved into the #1* position on Billboard's Top 100 chart, it remained at #1 for two weeks...
It reached #2 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, the two weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for both those weeks was "Who's Making Love" by Johnny Taylor...
Between 1962 and 1976 the Motown trio had forty-five records on the Top 100 chart, twenty made the Top 10 with twelve reaching #1...
They just missed having two more #1 records when both the above "Reflections" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" peaked at #2...
    * The record it knocked out of the top spot on the Top 100 chart was "Hey Jude" by the Beatles, it had been at #1 for nine consecutive weeks...

  68. D.... A....

I've been watching Reelz Channel and the biography of original Supreme Florence Ballard.  What a tragic story.  I suggest you watch to really learn about the story of The Supremes.  By the time of this song Cindy Birdsong was the replacement member of the greatest girl band of all time.  But it makes me sad because "Flo" was dead at 32.

  69. M.... J....

Diana at her best - a very characteristic powerful voice , clear as a bell, dramatic soulful lyrics , masterful background and production. Look at the stars above and somewhere you will see those of Diana , Mary , and Flo.

  94. K.... B....

I'm here cause I know the song and not from a video game.

  95. R.... H....

They could have still gone on but why?

  96. T.... ....

Ironically, Mary Wilson & Cyndi Birdsong don't even sing on this record. As was almost always the case with singles released under the "Diana Ross & the Supremes" name, Ms. Ross is the only Supreme to appear on them:
    Lead vocals: Diana Ross
Background vocals: The Andantes (Jackie Hicks, Marlene Barrow, and Louvain Demps)
    Instrumentation: The Funk Brothers
