This track is brilliant. I love how you can actually hear the difference in dynamic between the Magnus + Skwisgaar combo vs Toki + Skwisgaar. In the current lineup, Skwisgaar is allowed to go overboard and break free on guitar, and Toki serves solely to *compliment* his style, not fight against it. But with the previous combination here, it literally sounds *constrained* , sluggish, and too-careful. Like it's...enslaved. And the best part is, these styles not only translate DIRECTLY to the characters and the dynamics they have with each other, but takes a step further and practically explains why/how those dynamics came to be, all in ONE song. "The Hammer" is intentionally subdued in comparison to the other Dethklok songs, like it's being held back by something - and of course, that 'something' was Magnus himself.

I find it interesting if you think about the fact that DethAlbum III exists in their Verse that the boys still allowed this song to be in the album regardless. Nathan would NOT have allowed it if it wasn't Metal enough. I kind of like the idea also that this is their One and Only nod to Magnus before he became The Man Who Stands Behind Shadows(AKA Dildoz)

One of my favorite Dethklok songs and the most underrated. I really wanted to cover this but my guitarist and bassist are being "bitches" (basically we get together and nothing happens because we end up playing COD or Battlefield) and we don't have a drummer...

The show version was a lot better.

I think a really good twist to have had in the series would've been to have Magnus, after being kicked out of Dethklok, pull a Dave Mustaine move and try and form his own rival band and try to be better than Dethklok and get revenge on them that way, kinda like a Metallica vs. Megadeth thing, rather than leaving him shrouded in obscurity.

@Underintact134 If you listen earlier the bass has been chugging along but just before the bridge starts it breaks into a small riff. It is a huge indicator of the talent of the bassist that he saw an opening and took it without overwhelming the song.

Brendon usually has/had demo versions of the songs recorded for the show that differ slightly from the album version.
'Murdertrain-A-Comin'' was another song where the show version differs from the one we hear on the actual album.
Think of the show version as a sampler, and the album version as the main course.

The one song on the Dethalbums explicitly stated to have Magnus doing the Rhythm guitar instead of Toki. I love how badass and evil the riff sounds.

@Kateri 690 I actually think the slow tempo makes it better and more menacing. Brutality can come in many forms, and not all of them have to be fast to be brutal.
Slow tempo makes this song brutal because it's like watching demise, pain, doom (or whatever you want to call it) slowly looming towards you, slow but completely unstoppable. Like, you can't stop your doom, but, instead of ending your life fast, it makes you wait for your end, feeling despair rising and rising, because you know you can do nothing. This is what I think this song is trying to make you feel.
Just my opinion tho.

@mrbloodydoom Oh  totally get it, that's why I love Dethklok because it's well, "Dethharmonic".  I can even see the slower tempo for most parts of the song.  I just felt that some bits could have used a little more "deth" and a little less "harmonic".  That's my personal opinion, I also attempted to speed it up in the player and it lost that edge, it's like a masterpiece missing the final strokes.

I think I'd want the guillotine blade to move a little slower if I'm the one its dropping on ...

There have been so many Dethklok songs that I didn't like at first... But then, when I see the episode featuring the song, the underlying theme of the song really comes out and I gain a new appreciation and love for the song. This is an incredible example of just that. ROCK ON! \m/
