I'm French speaking, can someone explain to me what they do actually mean by "Dog and Poney Show"?

A dog and pony show is a show where animals are displayed to be judged. What they mean is that people are dressing up in order to judge one another, and the winners are the best looking people, not the people with the best personalities.

Much like the bar and club scene.
