Denny, Sandy - Candle In The Wind Lyrics
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to when the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to when the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the twenty-second row
Who sees you as something more than just sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to when the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude

Times that was..
Talent.
An absolutely wonderful version. Sung by "The Lady" Sandty Denny. Michael Steele (from the Bangles, & huge Sandy Denny fan) once said in an interview, that you know you've heard a great song, sung by a great singer, when you've get "goosebumps" & "chills" while listening to him/her. Well, that version, sung by "The Lady", made me want to cry.
A beautiful, & talented singer. Taken from the world too soon.
Like some others, I first heard Sandy many decades ago. My opinion is her best body of work was with Fairport Convention however I acknowledge she cut excellent individual tracks before and after as well. The comparison to Elton John's "Candle In The Wind" is not worthy of discussion. Sandy interprets the song based on her capabilities at the time and we must endure the poor mix and over production. The real joy is we can all listen to what recordings remain of an singularly astonishing voice.
perhaps the best version of the classic by taupin and john
Named my daughter after you Sandy just to ensure a beautiful life would remain in this world after your sad passing and we both had the privilege and honour to place flowers on your resting place on my daughters 16th birthday. Total inspiration in both our lives. And "Who knows where the Time Goes" will be played when I shake off my mortal coil to bask in the presence of your talent.
❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹 Love you Sandy Denny
Wish I had known about your music before
I’m new to it and I just am blown away by your voice
She could almost be singing about her own tragic life . Gone far too early our Sandy Denny .
I LOVE YOU SANDY!!
Could have been written about Sandy herself.....
bless you Sandy
Better late than never. Just discovered this wonderful singer.
Rip angel sandy you are missed ✌
Check out 'Black Tower of London' (Grenfell) on You Tube.
Elton John took this song from Sandy Denny
Sandy Denny has one of the pure voices uou could ever hear.
This song could have been written about this beautiful Girl.
RIP SANDY just like MM's fans Sandy your fans love you.
Wonderful. Wish her voice had not been so buried in the mix: but still, wonderful. Would love to have heard her sing Holly's "Raining In My Heart." She would have killed that one ...
Her voice was battered a bit by this stage by heavy drinking and smoking.
Thanks for the wonderful picture here on the channel.
nobody like Sandy
E.John must surely be simply blown away. He cant even hold a candle up to SD version
Ironic really
Love the crescendo on the second chorus
magic!!
Omg, what a wonderful voice!
Wish she hadn't done this. Of course she gave it her best.
the piano only version is better
This must have irked the purists
She had Elton and Bernie's blessing.Things were different back in the 70's. Not petty and all jealous like today.
@Barney Barnes I meant the Sandy Denny/folk purists. No such thing as an Elton John purist, lol.
Goosebumps.
John Gray indeed in an era now of homogenized voices and music Sandy's voice transcends the mundane
Hey John, I am just discovering Nick Drake, check him out if you haven't already. Instantly one of my favorites, and discovered by one of the Fairport Convention guys.
wow,a Nick Drake newby! well done,congrtulations.Nick was so beautiful,like Sandy,emotive,fragile,sublime! :)
Trancenditional version. Eclipses Elton John's version. He can't hold a candle in the wind to Sandy
Phillip Rains... VERY well said! She HAS such a beautiful voice. (It Lives on...as she does)
I can't hold a candle to your daft analogy
Phillip Rains
That is because he is gay and she was a woman.
@Descartes' Donkey No comparison !
Your with Norma Jean Now Sandy. God's Time is the best.
Love the way that the word " goodbye" just seems to drift away on the wind....
Sandy explores the places other singers cannot reach.....
10 times better than Elton John's version.
I adore Sandy but don't think this song suits her at all and to make a ridiculous remark that this is ten times better than the version that E.J recorded and WROTE is just plain crazy.
Absolutely better than Elton John. Sandy was far beyond him. Can't help but respect her.
Love Sandy but just as you say, silly statement.
I love both Reginald Dwight's & Alexandra Elena McClain's versions. Too bad she couldn't cover his "Someone saved my life tonight."
Great of course, but Eltons original is very good too.
Absolutely.
Awesome - a wonderful singer, taken from us far too soon.
To rousseau63..............Hello there, I too am an old man and lived throught the 60's, when I dreamed of the future........now I dream of the past, the music, the people, the freedom, the peace !! I will be on the ledge too, waiting to cross over. If you see me, just wave.
I wil I hope see you on the ledge,if not see you at cropredy(I already have my ticket for the 50th bash.)
+Alexander Karemacher you are not an old man you are who you are & you have wisdom beyond yrs that many could do well to learn from. I'm a child of the 60's too & feel old with the way the world is now but it can't go backwards we must go forward. I'll see you on the ledge too & I'll hold your hand & hug you & we'll share a smile & wink of knowing what could have been & what may be if we're lucky.?
The greatest female voice ever.
It's interesting because Sandy Denny lived way too short herself.
I meant by not y.
Better than Elton y a long way
