Del Shannon - Walk Away Lyrics

Every time I have to lie it tears me apart
Every time I see you cry
It takes a piece of my heart
I know that I said never never walk away from you
I know that I said I'd always be there my whole life through

I got to walk away, walk away
There's nothing left that I can do but walk away
Walk away
Slowly turn my eyes from you and walk away

Every time I make believe it hurts more and more
There was a time I couldn't see, now I know for sure
I know that I can't help it if it hurts you when I say goodbye
Don't know why it has to be the way it is, I tried and I tried

I got to walk away, walk away
There's nothing left that I can do but walk away
Walk away
Slowly turn my eyes from you and walk away

Walk away, Walk away

I got to walk away, walk away
There's nothing left that I can do but walk away
Walk away
Slowly turn my eyes from you and walk away

Walk away.

I got to walk away
There's nothing left that I can do but walk away
Walk away
Slowly turn my eyes from you and walk away

I got to walk away, walk away
Walk, Walk, Walk away
Walk away.

Del Shannon Walk Away Comments
  1. D.... G....

In his angst , DS is the only artist that you want him to SHOUT!! Oddly I find myself wanting to DS to BLARE his voice up and down and I DIG IT!! That is what mak es him different_ I usually hate a "HOG" but DS louder, i want LOUDER , I want HIGH, I want LOW!! BRING IT ON- HE has no competitor because HE BROKE THROUGH WITH IT - who could possibly do a cover on his angst expressive voice .

  10. b.... e....

    great song walk away

  11. J.... H....

Since this was released posthumously, it makes you wonder if he would've had a career resurgence because this sounds so good! You can definitely hear tones of Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne on this song. It's sad depression got the best of him.

  12. S.... E....

    Go...bounce lol

  13. L.... ....

    Love this one so much!

  14. s.... g....

  15. J.... J....

beautiful song from a pure genius

  16. G.... C....

    The Undisputed Truth

  17. T.... R....

This song would fit nicely into a "Traveling Wilbury" album !

    T.... R....

This is the song Tom Roger Lilleby they wrote and recorded together with Del Shannon that convinced the Wilbury members that Shannon could replace Roy Orbison.

The song features many Wilbury musicians including Lynne and Petty. This is why it sounds like a Wilbury record. I thought it was great.

Only a Del Shannon could move into Roy's spot effectively and respectfully. He played guitar, wrote and could sing (and hit high notes). A shame he never had the chance. But we do have this song.

  18. J.... J....

    classic song

  19. G.... C....

    Amen Del

  20. w.... ....

I've written the only authorized Del Shannon biopic tentatively named after this very album. So keep your fingers crossed.

  27. g.... ....

When she walked away I went to pieces,,,,,,,,

  28. D.... E....

I know that Jeff Lynne plays on this song (which probably explains what I'm about to ask) but... am I the only one thinking that the guitar part at 0:24 sounds exactly the same as the one in George Harrison's 'This is Love'? As I said, I know that Jeff Lynne plays on both of these, and also helped to produce both of them, but it does sound rather similar...

    D.... E....

Correct, the descending guitar line is a frequent addition to many Jeff Lynne productions. Think of it like one of his trademark sounds :)

    D.... E....

Ah, right...phew, that's a relief actually- I just thought I was going mad.

  29. J.... B....

Wish this could be released as single in uk. The right air time or tv mention would definetely be smash hit.

  30. J.... B....

Gut wrenchingly true sentiments in this song and made more so by Dels great sounding voice.

  31. n.... ....

THIS EDIT SLAYS! Any other Del Shannon you've remixed?

  32. P.... K....

    Truly amazing!

  33. J.... R....

Man, this should have been a #1.

  34. S.... M....

del would have been great in traveling wilburys .sad he never was.much missed.

    God bless Del Shannon.

  36. N.... ....

Feels like a goodbye from Del in a way. What a guy.

    J.... S....

YES!!! So many ways top do this!Miss him so much...

  43. M.... C....

    Beautiful for always!...

  44. g.... ....

One of his best, such a shame it wasn't a hit.

  45. J.... E....

    brilliant song brilliant singer

  46. e.... ....

Imponente Del Shannon con jeff lynne y tom petty en produccion guitarras y coros...otro derivado de los traveling wilburys...y k buena letra

  47. J.... E....

Dale could have had a new hits with Jeff l

  48. R.... B....

It kind of sounds similar to Roy Orbison's "You Got It." Probably because it was also written by Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty.

  49. S.... M....

this is the greatest heartbreak album of all time

  50. D.... L....

    Clásico eterno!!Temazoooooo!!!!

  51. D.... ....

When I moved to Nashville in 94,, I remember seeing Shannon's bus parked in a lot along side the downtown interstate,, always thought it was rather sad,,

  52. K.... P....

This is actually one of my favourite songs haha

  53. b.... ....

This is a great song. He would have done well with modern country and pop music.

  54. T.... R....

could listen to this over and over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    T.... R....

    +Todd Roiter have, do, will.

    T.... R....

I've been doing just that, Todd!

  55. l.... ....

Tom Petty got to manage Del Shannon in 1981, after years of looking up to him.
Jeff Lynne also admired and managed Del Shannon. Very important people in the music scene idolized Del Shannon.
Meanwhile (if memory serves me correctly) the Rock & Roll Hall of Shame wanted him to present some music award to Frankie Vallie (?).
Was this what pushed him across that line of reason which resulted in his taking his life?

    l.... ....

    +littlemikey1954 loved the Wilburys

    l.... ....

+littlemikey1954  Tom and Jeff produced Del on this album...They didn't manage him.

    l.... ....

He killed himself because of the suicidal side effects of Prozac.

  56. l.... ....

After hearing the fate of Del Shannon, whose first single would immortalize him, and trap him at the same time (he was known as "Mr. Runaway" after his first hit and no matter what he did, it would all go back to his first hit. He wasn't allowed to move on) Italian rocker, Fausto Leali, after achieving super stardom in Italy with his 1966 hit "Chi", REFUSED to perform that song afterwards. He would not let himself fall to the same fate. Then, again, being known as "Mr. CHI" (which translates to "Mr. Who?") would be much worse than "Mr. RUNAWAY".

    l.... ....

+littlemikey1954 This song is very awesome.

  57. e.... c....

    Dearest Del,you are so missed.

  58. C.... D....

I love this song! This was Del's return. what a pity he just couldn't find the strength to carry on that bit longer to realise the fruits of his long labour..

  59. J.... O....

There is a lot of Justin Hayword vocal influence  in this song-it is fantastic!

    J.... O....

    Umm...Jeff Lynne produced.

  60. r.... ....

would have made a great recording for roy orbison  or even better  roy and del that would have been great

    r.... ....

Del was suppose to replace Roy in the Traveling Wilbury's.I bet that a duo with Roy and Del would have been an"Occasion"beyond comprehension..Great thought.

    r.... ....

@St Pauli Del decided to join Roy Orbison instead of the Traveling Wilberys.

  61. e.... ....

    Jeff lynne produced

    e.... ....

Another one of those classic Jeff Lynne collaborations where he's working with one of his heroes, as much Jeff as the headline artist.

    e.... ....

Straight off the bat you can tell. Masterpiece

    e.... ....

That makes Jeff Lynne a hero. This is Del Shannon's finest recording in my opinion...kicks everyone's ass that ever criticised him too.

    e.... ....

endrizo Jeff Lynne produced - enough said.

  62. M.... O....

    This is a great recording.

  63. A.... D....

ao estilo Roy Orbison, com os mesmo músicos...muito bom, R.I.P.

  64. J.... H....

    Del was unique artist

  65. D.... E....

A TRAGIC LOSS OF A GREAT TALENT.GUITARIST DENIEL EDWARDS.

  66. I.... C....

Have this from the Live Concert From Australia though this song was Lip Synched! Great Album!

  67. 3.... ....

2014 is an exciting time for Del Shannon fans as an Australian promoter is producing a World Class Tribute to Del Shannon & Roy Orbison Together In Concert touring all around Australia. Wow what a great show this will be two of the World's Greatest Singers of all time.

  68. V.... M....

DEL was one of the greatest rock n rollers of all time , what a shame that he died when he did , his talent was awesome . just like Roy Orbison another brilliant singer , together with Tom Petty / Jeff Lynn / george Harrison / the wilburies would have been AWESOME , an unstopable group .

  69. J.... L....

Perfect Traveling Wilbury's sound....Del -- you would have fit the bill and what a contribution you would have made. It could not have been a rumor -- what with the likes of Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne producing and working on this material with Del. They were shaping him and he became a one man sounding Traveling Wilbury.

  70. b.... ....

I bought a promotional CD single of this song in 1990 - and soon after got the entire album. I had just seen him twice in the couples before his death. His concerts - along with Roy Orbison's, as I also saw him a year before he died - were the two BEST concerts I've ever seen. Truly magical performers! (The one other "oldies" act that I would lump with them as being one of my all time faves is Johnny Rivers!) Johnny, Roy, and Del were the best I've ever seen!

  71. f.... ....

i have heard of del shannons songs that i really liked but didnt know that it was him who sang them until i looked them up on youtube..... i love del shannon and its said that he took his own life in his hands R.I.P Del Shannon

  72. t.... ....

Back in the day, I was fortunate to catch Del in his prime, at the PNE in Vancouver, BC. Runaway live was a whole different experiance than the studio recording.

The Pacific National Exhibition was and still is great at bringing in named acts.
I live, Del does not. He's forever young. Catch ya later, Mr. S. RIP.

  73. s.... ....

I sometimes wonder if Roy's death was enough to push Del over the edge. :( RIP Roy and Del

  74. A.... D....

Thank you Prozac for erasing this man's life,
    ;(
but his music will live on...RIP Del Shannon!!!

  75. S.... P....

When Roy died of heart failure in 1988 it left a hole in the Wilbury's and Del was going to fill the void.It might have saved him,he would have been included in legendary company. He offed himself in 1991.End of story.with George Harrison gone there will never be a revolving door Wilbury's group.Great stuff while it lasted.

  76. j.... h....

WOW! ~ What a GREAT sounding tune! ... I'm just learning about Del's vast catalog of tunes. I was in the crib in the early 60's, but I can't believe how many of them I can instantly recall! A friend told me to definitely pick up Del's "Rock On!" CD, said I'll L-O-V-E it. ... BTW, I just saw the new Palladia channel special today (10/24/12) called "Mr. Blue Sky", about the genius of Jeff Lynne. Many guests: Sir Paul McC.,Ringo,Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Wilburys. VERY cool & Jeff's sweet house, too!

  77. S.... ....

Well, at least we have this track.... which is Del Shannon backed by the Traveling Wilburys! :-)

  78. P.... C....

    Well Ringo dosn't.

  79. P.... C....

Excellent, only recently discovered this track, what a great shame and loss. Don't know when this was recorded but it sounds like he took his own advice, literally.

  80. c.... ....

Del Shannon liked "Runaway" but felt it was too fast, so he made "Walk Away." True story.

  81. d.... ....

There was a rumour that Del was join the Traveling Wilburys in place of Roy Orbison. Of course, Del decided to join Roy Orbison instead.

  82. G.... T....

Frankly I couldn't care less what Lennon had to say either. I could never imagine Del writing pretentious drivel like Imagine. Peace:)

  83. G.... T....

Even though Del was a brilliant producer the Lynne stamp on this is unmistakable and just lifts the song to another level. There is a collaboration you could only ever dream about and yet we were lucky enough it actually happened.

  84. r.... m....

The one & only brilliant Del Shannon.. Another self-penned song recorded in 1989, along with the rest of the songs that make up the "Rock On" album.. Highly recommended (by me..lol..), & please join us on Dels "rockondelshannon" yahoo group if you can..

  85. d.... ....

Paul 'name dropped' Del when it was too late in 1996, google their names together and you'll find it. He pretty much credits Del with popularizing the 'new' chord progression used in Runaway, which the Beatles used in 'From Me to You'...Paul talks about Del covering it. George sings backup on the Wilburys cover of Runaway. Obviously we'll never know what John thought, and who really cares what Ringo has to say?

  86. J.... B....

The last single released before Del's death. It scraped onto the bottom of the Australian charts, and was a mid-chart item in Tokyo (Japan).

  87. #.... B....

    最高の曲( ^ω^)

  88. M.... B....

Look this Jeff Lynne deal shows they didn't just leave him in the wilderness.

  89. S.... P....

i wish he could have gotten with the other wilburys'.i bet they would have made another "kill" LP.he must have been in a lot of pain.i own this LP and i really think this song is a great rocker with great vocals.i wish he was still with us.

  90. 3.... ....

What a beautiful song!! I've never heard this one! RIP Del, you are never going to be forgottten. I''m a member of the club who keeps a member of the Heavenly Rock and Roll Band alive.... We will never let go of any of you. :-)

  91. J.... S....

    Del!! Del!!! Del!!

  92. L.... ....

While I cannot recall any specific mention of Del Shannon in interviews of The Beatles, it's likely they were influenced by him. As most of you know, Shannon recorded a version of "from Me to You" back in 1963! I sure miss Del Shannon.

  93. j.... ....

@sportboy6 I agree that he would've been a great addition to the Traveling Wilburys. However for what it's worth the guy the Wilburys were actually considering to "replace" Orbison was Elvis. According to George Harrison they had obtained a tape from Presley's estate of an unreleased Elvis song and were going to try to make a Wilburys track out of it but it just didn't work. Jeff Lynne however would later go on to use a similar technique for the new Beatles songs on the Anthologies.

  94. s.... ....

He would have been a great replacement for Roy Orbison for any future Traveling Wilbury projects with Lynne, Dylan, Petty, and Harrison. Rumor has it that he was given some consideration by them. His inclusion would have made for a better release than what Traveling Wilburys Volume 3 turned out to be. These tracks show he could still rock with the best of them.

  95. P.... ....

Took me a while, but I finally found Del's songs here, you can really hear Jeff Lynne influences, Awesome channel...

  96. S.... P....

chuck westover was a manic depressive and had a bad moment

  97. B.... W....

I think it was the pills that he was on...

    But I could be wrong!

  98. B.... W....

Speak for yourself. He is the best rock & roller.

  99. V.... ....

Jeff Lynn is ALL OVER THIS ! If Lynn were paint, Shannon would be the Hot-rod Lynn was painted on! GREAT SONG!
