Del Shannon - (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame Lyrics

A very old friend came by today
'Cause he was telling everyone in town
About the love that he just found
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

He talked and talked and I heard him say
That she had the longest blackest hair
The prettiest green eyes anywhere
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

Though I smiled the tears inside were a-burning
I wished him luck and then he said goodbye
He was gone but still his words kept returning
What else was there for me to do but cry

Would you believe that yesterday
This girl was in my arms and swore to me
She'd be mine eternally
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

Del Shannon (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame Comments

  2. L.... L....

That, s alright. Del Shannon, in His Latest Flame;is emphasizing the words: Yesterday. Friend.Name.Flame.Today.Believe.Eternally.Say and Returning. Lars Larson alingsås sweden jag.

  3. J.... C....

I think the problem was that the instruments were too loud in comparison with Del’s vocals. Also, as good as DS was, I don’t think that song fit his voice. But look up DS singing Roy Orbison’s “Crying”, and he sounded every bit as good as the great Roy himself. But Elvis’ version of “Marie’s the Name” was hands-down the best. Tragically, all three men died too soon...

  4. q.... ....

I like DS, but Elvis nails it.

  5. E.... ....

Pretty good. If Elvis hadn't made a masterpiece out of this, I think Del's recording would be considered an underground cult hit.

  6. R.... M....

Great But Elvis takes it home.

  7. R.... A....

I love the keyboard backing in the chorus and at the end. It was Del Shonnon’s trademark on his biggest hits.

  8. J.... B....

Both amazing singers but Elvis slayed this song!!!

  9. E.... B....

Ok I’m gonna let myself get crucified. I love Elvis and from objective standpoint I’d say his is better........... but I like Del’s better🤷🏽‍♂️

  10. M.... -....

Del Shannon > The Misfits > Elvis

  11. L.... P....

"Runaway" was one of my favorite songs as a kid but this is very bad. No wonder I can't remember ever hearing Del sing this. Comparing it to Elvis, and there is really no comparison.

    L.... P....

Check out the cover of Runaway and Hats Off to Larry by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

  12. J.... J....

Yep Elvis. But I do like the way the drums are played in this version being a drummer myself.

  13. D.... U....

Elvis took this one, but elvis couldn't do "Run away" like Del Shannon did.

    D.... U....

Yes he could if he'd recorded it in the studio.

  14. s.... ....

Elvis might be better on this one, but Del was a lot better on Runaway than Elvis. But still, two major talents

    s.... ....

Elvis's version was live and a bit throwaway. A serious studio version would've topped Del's.

  15. R.... B....

This song made me run away and keep searching for something to plug every hole in my body just to be sure I couldn't hear it

  16. W.... O....

About the only song I wish Del would have left alone, He can sing about any song but not this one.

    W.... O....

    Del Shannon wrote this song.

  17. R.... 8....

I'm sure if Del's contract was right, he was glad Elvis recorded it!! Sorry but Elvis overshadowed him on this one!!

  18. A.... M....

Warum hat er sich nur erschossen?😥
    Mein idol

  19. p.... h....

I'm sure Elvis was really threatened with this lmao

  20. G.... S....

    Nice..bur EP slammed it!

  21. R.... H....

This is the original version. It shows how different producers bring different ideas to the table.

  22. p.... h....

I'm thinking about uploading my own version after to listening to that!

  23. O.... J....

el rey del rock es lamejor versión de todas

  24. E.... A....

Elvis is so much better, sorry Shannon!

  25. s.... ....

Elvis did a better job....Dells great with most of his songs but not with this one...

  26. r.... ....

Elvis backing by the guys in Nashville are so much HOTTER than this backing. Del singing is good but the band sucks

  27. K.... A....

    Elvis wins on this one

  28. O.... C....

mejor la versión del rey del rock elvis

  29. N.... ....

My favourite Shannon song. He had an extremely distinctive voice and style. Great song.

  30. K.... t....

Published on my dad's birthday and he was born in this era fun times! x

  31. A.... D....

RUBBISH! The worst version ever made unless anyone made a version that is worse on purpose. RUBBISH!

  32. J.... C....

Oi versiones malas pero esta se lleva la palma , joder que poca gracia cantando y que musica mas chunga .

  33. R.... B....

I'm sorry Elvis, but Del has the upper hand with this one!

    R.... B....

You need your ears syringed! LMFAO!

    R.... B....

Sorry, dude...in my very humble opinion, Elvis' version is the best 😎🎸🇺🇸🏄

    R.... B....

    Richie Betz elvis much better

    R.... B....

    Richie Betz this is awful

  34. m.... g....

    Shannon was great.

  35. D.... S....

When at the top of their game, they were both very good!

  36. R.... C....

del  Shannon   was better than   elvis

    R.... C....

In all reality no but in my opinion yes.

    R.... C....

    LOL....

    R.... C....

Roddy Charles, only a moron could think so

  37. K.... ....

    @Ger Ve...
You're obviously feckin' deaf, this guy could never tie Elvis' feckin' shoe laces. Shannon was ok with his own songs. He absolutely murdered this great song.

    K.... ....

Everyone has an opinion. I like this version better. Del had a somewhat greater range than Elvis but Elvis is better in general. His the greatest singer that ever lived.

    K.... ....

    +Richie Betz ...
Well me auld flower, if you like this version that's OK. I prefer the king and his version. OK the scores on the doors please....
    Del: 1 out of 10
    Elv: 10 out of 10

Ya'll have a nice day. peace

    K.... ....

This is a Del Shannon song Elvis covered it.

  38. T.... v....

    Better Than Elvis Much Better

    T.... v....

    LOL....

  39. b.... ....

Could you imagine Elvis trying to sing Rag Doll. Elvis had more of a crooning voice as Del had a higher pitch voice. Some songs are not good fits for certain entertainers.

    b.... ....

Bollocks. Presley had the best Rock voice of all time. He could out-sing Del on anything.

  40. b.... ....

I will give this one to Elvis. In general I find that Del had greater vocal ability than Elvis. Del wrote along of songs and was a true original. There would of been a lot of Del's songs that Elvis would have struggled with. In the end it comes down to who had the most record sales.

    b.... ....

Yeah Del has a greater range but in general Elvis Presley is better. He was the greatest singer that ever lived.

    b.... ....

Freddy Mercury was better singer than Elvis

  41. M.... B....

Del did this first, but just was not made for him.  My favorite Elvis song

  42. J.... O....

I think Del admitted he didn't like the cut and reckoned it was an Elvis song.

  43. M.... ....

Elvis version versus Del Shannon:  I'm glad we settled the question of which one is best.  It's a matter of taste, folks!

  44. J.... M....

Del Shannon is great , but he aint no Elvis

    J.... M....

@John Stewart ... yeah yeah yeah ! ... And even dead they still can beat Elvis. They did it soo easily when they were fabs. (ah ah ah). Still at BBQ Parsley is unbeatable, now and before... " Ladies & gentlemen Elvis just left the toilets ... Thank you, good evening and good riddance ".

    J.... M....

@Babaloo Bimbo They came to grovel at The KIng's feet in Bel Air, August 1965. They didn't want to leave. He couldn't wait to get rid of them. Shite overrated pop band who didn't even last a decade and couldn't play live. Forever in the shadow of The Stones.

    J.... M....

@John Stewart Of course they went to grovel ... Elvis was the only singer in history able to sing and eat a dozen donuts, 4 or 5 burgers, a well roast bbq chicken + mashed potatoes and a lot of gravy and 12 large size Pepsi at the same time. That's a King feat !

    J.... M....

@Babaloo Bimbo Beatles are still shite. Dated and overrated. No one cares.

    J.... M....

@John Stewart your so fvcking stupid

  45. F.... H....

Give over. As much as I like Del Shannon,  this is not anywhere within a nautical mile of the Elvis version. Anyone who says it is must be tone deaf or one of those childish Elvis knockers. I'm sure that Del would consider his hit Runaway far better than Elvis's version.

  46. C.... D....

This is better than the Elvis Presley version

    C.... D....

    do not understand you.

    C.... D....

Maybe not. I think that this recording of Marie s The Name from Del Shannon is great-and to my mind I say it is better than the version by Elvis Presley. But then again Elvis Presley did such good job of the song and I also like his version of it too.And the song topped the UK pop charts when Elvis Presley took it there in 1961 a year before I was born!

    C.... D....

True ,  Elvis also did a beautiful job in runaway

    C.... D....

@KelvenRider Elvis Presley did a beautiful version of Runaway.? I don't think so!

  47. r.... ....

You need to hear the version by country singer JD Myers. It is definitely based on the Elvis version but has a head nod to Dell's because that organ was used. The beat is more straight ahead while the guitars do the Bo Diddley beat. JD sings it great, very close to Elvis but more laid back, but what makes JD's version is JAMES BURTON plays a blistering guitar solo. It's on the 1997 album Like A Train. It is a rare CD if you look it up on amazon. There is a video someone made on YouTube of the JD Myers version.

  48. k.... s....

Wow-this is pretty awful compared to Elvis's version

    k.... s....

this shows that Del although so good could not match Elvis' voice and the arrangement too this came out on the Runaway LP just before Elvis recorded the single

  49. y.... b....

Elvis version is far more bettter

  50. C.... ....

    Kanoners bra version Swefirebird :)

  51. C.... D....

As a female who LOVED Elvis but also Loved (yes lower case) Del Shannon - Elvis had such a depth of tone but Del Shannon had a raw 'something', what evere each had if you could bottle or pass IT on you would make a fortune - both were brilliant, were beautiful looking men, a rare talent and both are sadly missed, in 40 - 50 years what rappers, etc, would be held up as these two, Elvis, De,l love you both in your own ways and thank you to both of you :)

  52. d.... ....

I do know what a vocal range is but you clearly don't. Apologize, now!

  53. d.... ....

You called me sir. Now, show me the proper f*cking respect and apologize for your insult on "THE KING". Shannon while a good performer is simply not in ELVIS' league and you bloody well know it!

  54. r.... t....

its nowhere as good as the Elvis version

  55. j.... ....

Excellent version with signature Hammond organ

  56. M.... P....

    I prefer Elvis.

  57. F.... ....

A version of this song which I think is better than Elvis and Del is by an Australian singer, James Reyne, check it out

    F.... ....

Decent version but not a patch on Elvis.

  58. F.... ....

    Another version of thissong

  59. E.... H....

I think this is version is so much more original than Elvis'. I respect the King but I think he's a bit overrated in terms of his signing ability- Del here puts some real soul into it

  60. C.... ....

Love Del, but there's a reason his version's an album cut, while Elvis' became a million selling, smash single in '61. Just listen to them both back to back and hear why. - JG

  61. A.... E....

I like Del"s "Runaway" first, but Maries the name of his lastest flame Elvis has it beat.

  62. X.... ....

@KIWI897 Del released this before Elvis. The popular version was Elvis eating Del's crumbs

  63. N.... ....

I agree with the majority on this one. Although I love Del, his version pales in comparison to the King. This is the first Elvis record I remember hearing over the radio when it was new. They played it over and over again, every morning, just when we were getting up: also, Return to Sender, which came out about the same time. I don't recall , now, which came first. Maybe some one out there can help me on this.

  64. e.... ....

No matter how much I loved Del's classic records he shouldn't have tried this one he doesn't have the voice for it which it is obvious after hearing Elvis' original But Del's records will remain classics of rock and roll forever RIP Del

  65. r.... ....

I LIKE DEL SHANNON BUT ELVIS;S VERSION IS THE BEST POP SINGLE OF THE PRE BEATLES SIXTIES

  66. D.... B....

@renc2002 i guess to each his own. im just a huge del shannon fan. it takes me back to being little just haven a good time with my parents. i dont know about other "young girls" today but my taste in music is very wide, from eddie arnold to ozzy to tegan and sara and many many others.

  67. r.... ....

    @yaya2lO3
I have nothing against Del Shannon and I actually feel sorry for the poor guy and what he went through during the end of his life....But girl, what is wrong with you? What is wrong with you young girls today? If you truly had good taste in music, you would know that Elvis CLEARLY had the better version out the two!!....I like many of EP's songs, but "Marie" might just possibly be my favorite out of all of them...

  68. D.... B....

Del Shannon is the best!! i love his voice so much. i like Elvis, but to me id take Del Shannon any day.

  69. R.... B....

I'm feeling this more than elvis version, both good though

  70. j.... k....

elvis is more powerful long live the kings music

  71. W.... B....

Usually I like the original versions of songs better than remakes, but the version Elvis did was superb. This is a good version too, but I like what Elvis did with it just a bit more.

  72. d.... ....

Shannon is good but he didn't have ELVIS's vocal range to pull this one off.

  73. R.... P....

i like this version.a fresh ,different take on a classic.

  74. s.... ....

    del shannon always

  75. H.... K....

Love Elvis version more, but Del is good in his own way.
    Different style I supposed.

  76. l.... ....

del recorded this before elvis, both good versions ,i think del sings with more pasion.thanx for upload.

  77. T.... ....

disagree with you dels version is the best

  78. 1.... ....

@jammingmopar Actually, this isn't a cover. Del recorded his version before Elvis's came out.

  79. j.... ....

I love Del but this is not his best cover.

  80. c.... h....

@TheReckonman that would make you fucking old then

  81. s.... ....

    Interesting,

  82. R.... K....

    @TheReckonman it is del shannon

  83. d.... ....

Just a classic...like others here apart from t'hemysticknight'....what a true legend Del's music is, always at the top of my collection 'hats of to larry etc...class stuff!

  84. D.... ....

Del Shannon committed suicide back in the 90s dude.

  85. b.... ....

    so true,like this best,Del you´re the best in my book,love you,caro

  86. g.... ....

    by far the best version!!
