'kin fantastic album. Understand why the band didn't like it. Ians extended victim whine gets on yer tits, (who do we think we are part 2, and he is a sweaty underneath it all) but you can put it out of your head with just focusing on the rest of the band who are all phenomenal. Paice delivers in spades on this album.

In many ways this is classic Mark2 unique sound and one of a kind song of the genre they created with the monumental "In Rock" album. A genre of which only they ever played.

Still unbelievable 30 years later that the amazingly talented, witty and unique vocal powerhouse Ian Gillan as heard on this great DP song was fired (May 1989) at Blackmore’s behest and replaced by schmaltzy marginally competent hack Joe Lynn Turner! Or that anyone actually thinks that the Turner-fronted, wimpy power ballad/mediocre/bland dross of Slaves And Masters (1990) holds a candle to The House Of Blue Light! Turner’s obnoxious attitude—attacking fans who said he had no place in the band “nostalgic fools who have no idea it’s 1991”—was only exceeded in awfulness by his thoroughly mediocre lyrics and cringe-inducing behavior on stage. Purple never recovered commercially in the U.S. from the cratering of the band’s commercial momentum by the Turner/SAM flop. Thank goodness Glover, Lord & Paice forced Gillan’s return in 1992 & Blackmore failed in his attempt to destroy DP by abandoning the band with contracted concert dates still pending.

Amazing guitarist

The most underrated Purple's album, this album is one of my fav after Perfect Strangers and Slaves and Masters. This song is just out of this world. Blackmore is doing a lot of things to that guitar from the first second that song starts and plays it heavily all the way to the end. I never heard Blackmore uses whammy bar this much as he does in this song. Every time Ian is screaming you can hear Blackmore is replying with his guitar. This is pure music and of course Lord of Hammond and Paicy on the drum, Roger banging the bass.

This is what Blackmore was good at, no riffs, from start to end guitar solos. When it comes to riffs it s not without Lord ever. The whole track sounds formless, like a rehearsal.

I actually won Ritchie blackmores signed white fender guitar with back stage pass & met him in his dressing room before the gig at Hammersmith odeon as it was then, his room was dark with just candles alight, " do you play?" He said, I just looked at him mouth open, um no, had my photos taken with him, arm around with guitar, strange but polite. I was just in a trance when met him face to face 80s I think.

Mark 2 still after many years the greatest group of pure rock musicians ever. They played their own genre and it was not heavy metal. It was a blend of jazz,classical, blues, psychedelic rock and early rock&roll.

I love this song. I love this whole album. I still listen to the whole thing a couple times a week. Peace

Ritchie is amazing. So much music and he never repeated anything. And he very rarely used chord's. I believe that is why he is the most influential guitarist in Rock and Roll.

This album is by far much better than many other albums in mid -late 80s. You just cant compare Deep Purple with other metal bands. They could never even come close to the purple quality .never.

The band never liked this album. Shame really as it had more to do with internal tensions rather than the output. I think it's pretty good.

+Juan Conta some CDs had extended versions of Spanish Archer and ... Strangdways I think. LP was shorter in all cases for obvious reasons.

I do not know of any live recordings of the song if that is what you are asking.  I do not know if DP ever played it live.

You are very right! I think just the same. It is a very good album, not worse than Perfect Strangers. And this hit is one of the best on it, if not the best. Blackmore is fantastic here! (Gillan is not so, but who cares:) What a fine change at 4:11!

Finally this song gets posted! One of my favorites...reminds me of an old girlfriend and a turbulent relationship. But...she gave the best head EVER!

This is a personal favorite. I don’t care if the bouncy feel makes it sound a bit like Dr. Who, Ritchie simply plays the hell out of this thing start to finish. I like the choppy thing he does at around 2:29. The lyric there is “…and now we drive along… in this thundering silence.” I always thought that the guitar evoked a visual of the broken white line down the center of a highway, passing by quickly. Would’ve been a good little part of a video had they ever done one for the song.

FYI - The Spanish Archer is anothe name for a "con game".

To quote Ian Gillan in an interview he gave to a UK magazine at the time of the album's release, Spanish Archer is about breaking up with a girlfriend.Or to quote him exactly; "it's about giving some lump the elbow". Spanish Archer = El Bow.

WOW. INtense! This is one of their best! Just listened to this on my tranny friends vintage stereo. She has a Tandy brands TOSHIBA out sourced MFG'ed reciever from 1979!! And it ROCKS!!
