Deep Purple - Shield Lyrics

Mama plays a queen on the hill built on a dream
While the children play in the field
Papa smokes the pipe of a sweet and better life
But how strong is the shield?
Can peace be found on the carpet above ground
Where sky is forever blue

So let it pass baby now, the slow and riding cloud
Which may take me from you

Many things a man can lose
His self, his rights, his views
But never his heart or his love
So take this hand of mine and climb baby, climb
To the hill up above

Now you can play a queen on the hill built on a dream
While our children play in the field
I can smoke the pipe of a sweet and better life
And trust in the strength of the shield

So trust in you love, and Lucy of above
And let light pass like a wheel
Don't take the chance of life's hectic dance
Kiss the strength of the shield

The seeker will be found by the looker on the ground
And to his wish he will yield

Fate will have it's word, of course [think this line is wrong...]
And time will change its course
And hold the strength of the shield

Deep Purple Shield Comments
  1. D.... C....

Atmospheric track from MK1 Purple with great playing by Jon Lord. Rod Evans was a decent singer (he just wasn't in the hard rock mould). The path where the band were heading. I think Gillan and Glover were actually in the band before Simper and Evans found out they'd been sacked, lol. Lord did say in the 1995 BBC Rock Family Tress docu that they "could have been a lot nicer about the Nicky and Rod thing but they'd had still hated them for chucking them out the band".

    Creepy as hell. Dynamite.

  3. D.... V....

Some really progressive improvisational guitar here by Richie Blackmore.

  4. D.... V....

Best vocalist of all time for Deep Purple Rod Evans, but Ritchie was a temperamental.

  7. D.... ....

One of my favorites. Really psychedelic. Also love the quite enigmatic lyrics.

  8. G.... ....

This sounds like Cream. Pretty cool

  9. c.... s....

Psychedelic Deep Purple with Rod Evans from Captain Beyond. This is damn good stuff, even without the pipe..... TJ STRUSKA

My favourite Mark I song! Rod Evans vocals are magical !!!

  12. J.... F....

Great song writing, composition, arrangement. The percussion at the end to fade out very cool.

One of my all time favorite songs to this very day. Ritchie Blackmore showcased his avante guard style and was years ahead of his time while Vocalist Rod Evens really added the touch to the voice that carried this tune. What an awesome combination of talent! So lacking in today's shallow music!

  18. B.... H....

I love Blackmore's solo. It's introspective and wistful at first and builds to a great climax. He had a wonderful sense of song dynamics at an early age.

  19. D.... C....

Jon's organ has that bond theme to it

I hope that shield worked out for you.

    papa smokes the pipe...
This song is my Deep Purple favourite from way back.

    G.... B....

This along with Anthem April Mandrake Root and their Beatles covers are all the best from Mark 1, and people only know Hush from that era.
Oh yeah, and Wring that Neck, but I think that song has good recognition.

  27. B.... G....

I will be bringing in the new year with the SHIELD
And trust in the strength of the Shield!!!

  28. T.... ....

The percussion Ian Paice incorporated IMO makes this one of the best Mk. 1 lineup songs.

  29. R.... J....
