Deep Purple - River Deep, Mountain High Lyrics

When you were a young girl
Did you have a rag doll
The only doll you've ever owned
Now I'll love you just the way you loved that rag doll
Only now my love has grown

It gets stronger as the river flows
Deeper baby, heaven knows
Higher, as it goes

Do I love you, my oh my
River Deep, Mountain High, yeah, yeah, yeah
Do I love you, would I cry
Oh I love you baby, how I love you baby

When you were a young girl
Did you have a puppy
That always followed you around
Well I'm gonna be as faithful as that puppy
No I'll never never let you down

Cos it gets stronger as the river flows
It gets deeper baby, heaven knows
It gets higher, so much higher, as it goes

Do I love you, my oh my
River Deep, Mountain High, yeah, yeah, yeah
Do I love you, would I cry
Oh I love you baby, how I love you baby

I love you baby like a flower loves a spring
I love you baby like a robin likes to sing
I love you baby like a schoolboy likes his pie
And oh I love you baby, River deep, Mountain high

Do I love you, my oh my
River Deep, Mountain High, yeah, yeah, yeah
Do I love you, would I cry
Oh I love you baby, how I love you baby

Honestly this is my favorite track from this LP.

  3. R.... ....

The beginning of the song wow it just hit me! Doesn't it in a way remind you of 2001 A Space Odyssey? That just blew my mind I had to listen to it again.

  4. s.... g....

turned the mediocre Neil Diamond pop song into a psychedelic prog masterpiece. It's so magic.

  15. P.... A....

Best album ever. Loved this one and this song!!

  16. B.... U....

When you start a cover of River Deep with Strauss also sprach Zarathustra you sure have some super highconfident and ambitions for your band! Cant think of another prog or hard rock band that could have done it without it sounded stupid. True masterpiece!

    B.... U....

Emerson lake and palmer were the masters of arranging classical music. This does aound stupid; it doesn't even tie with the rest of the song.

  17. .... ....

    當芝加哥好熱遇上台北好熱,或是台北好冷碰到芝加哥好熱,山高水長,一切都是時空境遇錯亂的幻覺 ……

Unforgatteble.....all my youth , and it is not underrated , every body was listening to this in 1969 , at that time geek generation was not born yet...

  22. B.... ....

    BEST VERSION..... EVER  !!!!!

  23. A.... J....

Such underrated for an amazing song from The Book of Taliesyn, I would have been happy if the people who listen MKII and III, listen to MKI.
This album is the best by the MKI.

  24. D.... T....

still one of favorite all time

  25. M.... S....

Just heard this for the first time - it’s dreadful.

  26. J.... W....

Nick Simper and Ian Paice kill this verson...nothing like an ass-kickin" rythem section...brilliant indeed!!

    J.... W....

And Nick simper bass sound is so fine !

  27. J.... Y....

    Erittäin paska versio

  28. C.... d....

This album is so underrated, even by Deep Purple fans.

    C.... d....

Deep purple "fans" think that songs like child in time and burn are underrated, and they think that deep purple just get good when Ian gillean start to be the vocalist

  29. J.... ....

I think anyone can agree that 1:59 - 2:39 is pure awesomeness

  30. M.... ....

I agree Laura. It is their best. I love in Rock, but this was their artistic pinnacle.

  31. L.... B....

When you hear Deep Purple on the radio its usually Hush or Smoke on the Water. I used to own this album when it first came out. You can't find it anywhere anymore. This is SO awesome!!!!!!!!!

  32. E.... F....

    Too long.

    E.... F....

Evelyn Ferguson ... I agree. It's been way too long since I listened to the magic of this rendition of a previously unknown song. I thought it was an original by Deep Purple. Many years later I found out it was out of Motown.

  33. X.... 4....

It's a real symphonic rock poem

  34. R.... ....

please bring back Rod. awesome voice. love his vocals here and with Captain Beyond.

    R.... ....

Last I heard he was working at an airport

  35. G.... H....

Forgotten how good this is, forgot how much I like it. Welcome back old friend.

    G.... H....

Ditto.  It does take me back to a wonderful time in my life.

  36. B.... M....

    thank you for upload !

  37. M.... T....

I remember when my brother memo use to listen to this song in his 1968 Vega sporting his leather jacket with a Levi over it with the sleeves cut off an gasoline was 75 cents

    M.... T....

Montelbon Teengar ... You took a stab at pretending to be associated with the era that this song came from. But you failed. The Chevy Vega didn't exist in 1968. Until the oil embargo scam of the early 70s, gas was 19.9¢ - 39.9¢/gal., depending on the local market and octane grade. After the "shortage", fuel prices shot up and eventually exceeded the pricing capacity of the pumps which could only reach 99.9¢

  38. J.... S....

    Heavier than Led Zeppelin

  39. T.... J....

    Eat your heart out Ike.

  40. P.... W....

Okay, this is on Picabou's account. Didn't know it was still up...anyway, I just wanted to say FINALLY someone who plays the entire introduction of this song. And the only album this is on is Book of Taliesyn.

  41. T.... ....

I always thought this was the original as a kid. It still kind of is to me in a way :)

    T.... ....

+Taylor Garofalo You can't compare them, but I like Eric Burdon's version most

  42. j.... p....

    great great version.

  43. A.... ....

    Better than the original!

    A.... ....

    of course,deep purple rules!

    A.... ....

AlectravianJF96 interesting take on this song, but to say it's better than the original is a little much. The appeal of the original is the orchestral arrangement and Phil Spector's signature "Wall of Sound." To each his own, I suppose.

    A.... ....

    Oh hell no.

    A.... ....

I listened to this out of curiosity because it was in my search results. I think it's interesting but not better than the original.

  44. T.... E....

who ever puts these up, TY One of the great bandsof the psychedelic era.Great live show, saw them several times

  45. S.... S....

I have always loved this album ! And "The River Deep, Mountain High" melody is outstanding! We must also remember that this was recorded as early as in 1968.

  46. B.... F....

Amazing una mierda total para mi y no me importa ko que digan

  47. S.... ....

The way he sings the first two lines is so hot - what a sexy voice. It's a great song - I love Ike and Tina's version, also. Theirs had Spector's Wall of Sound.

    S.... ....

I really liked Evans as a singer

  48. S.... S....

Deep Purple's first three albums are so underrated. It took me awhile to get into MKI after hearing MKII and MKIII first. But the third album "Deep Purple" blew my mind. It's a masterpiece. Even the radio single, Emeretta, oddly left off the album, is among their best singles ever. The Book of Taliesyn is good too of course. I wouldn't have wanted to miss MKII, III and IV but to hear where MKI could have gone... We'll never know.

    S.... S....

Very true, but don't forget Mk VI. The Morse era is great, Purpendicular and Abandon were awesome. The seventh incarnation with Don Airey on keys made some good music, but Lord and Paice were the only members of each of the first six lineups. Don Airey is great, but there is only one Jon Lord R.I.P

    S.... S....

You should like Nick Simper's band Warhorse, and their two albums ("Warhorse" from 1970, and 1972's "Red Sea"). Musically, they picked up where MKI leaves off. A damn shame their albums weren't released on this side of the pond!

    S.... S....

Their first two albums might well be their very best. There's an edge, a rawness, that disappeared as their production began to refine.

  49. s.... ....

Great looking [album] cover. A lost art. God, I miss browsing through the local record store.

    s.... ....

shadowheart52 Lost? This album in charts were doing better than In Rock

    s.... ....

@Albert Andrus Now its a Micro SD

  50. M.... L....

My first rockalbum, still loving it!

  51. A.... Y....

  52. A.... M....

    Excelente !!!!!

  53. B.... ....

River Deep in LSD and Mountain High as a kite :-)

    B.... ....

I imagine this is what being on the edge of madness would sound like.

    B.... ....

    OMG I love this comment!!

  54. L.... K....

This still makes my heart pound and my blood race! What else can I say? Amazing!!!

  55. L.... K....

This song is only on Book of Taliesyn by Deep Purple. I think that this album was their best. I always hear "Hush" or "Smoke on the Water" on the radio, never Anthem or River Deep Mountain High....way too bad! Amazing recording!

    L.... K....

When does Am or Fm radio ever get it right? When does "classic rock" radio ever get it right? They actually ruin it for those who know better. You are right on with River Deep and Anthem as masterpieces from Deep Purple. Just for additional consideration (besides Child of Time which is majestic) I might add Salisbury by Uriah Heep, When the Music's Over by The Doors (lions and tigers and bears, oh my!), and the last two song that bridge together so well on the incomparable Blue Oyster Cult "Secret Treaties" album -- Flaming Telepaths/Astronomy. Four phenomenal bands I just mentioned above.

    L.... K....

Deep Purple is a brilliant band, they have so many songs that are underrated. Lazy, Fools, No No No, Anthem, Shield, April, Blind, Wring That Neck. The list can go on.

The only albums that got the right amount of attention are Machine Head and Perfect Strangers.. I would also say Shades of Deep Purple, because in all honesty, that album didn't really impress me.

    L.... K....

To me, Deep Purple in Rock is absolutely their best Album.

  56. m.... ....

    fantastic song!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. C.... M....

Deep Purple before they were famous... But Jon's organ is already awesome and Ritchie Blackmore plays his guitar like nobody else.
The only reservation I will mention is about the singer : Rod Evans hasn't got Ian Gillan or David Coverdale's voice (nor Tina's !!!)

    C.... M....

Nope, he's got Rod Evan's voice. It sounds really good in songs like Shield, both of their Beatles covers(Help and We Can Work It Out), April And of course, Anthem, Rod Evan's most golden vocals where he sounds a lot like Elvis.

But I can agree, he ain't got shit on Ian Gillan's golden vocals like Child in Time or Highway Star. I haven't listened to anything from David Coverdale's era, so I can't say anything there, and yeah Tina's vocals sound much better than Rod's in this cover.

    C.... M....

@SnakeEater866 Definitely he has Rod Evans voice...

  58. J.... ....

Hey Neil I bet you got some good stories to share!

  59. J.... ....

Ike and Tina Turner did this song real justice! did they ever have a hit that wasn't a cover or written by somone else? If they weren't takin eachother to court or havin eachother arrested!

    J.... ....

JerecDarkheart wha are you talking about!? Lol. They never went to court until they got divorced. The abuse in their relationship was never publicized to anyone. Only those close to them knew about it, up until Tina released her book. Their catalogue is quite huge if you actually go back and can find each of the albums. The problem is that Ike was so fixated on writing a hit that a lot of their songs started to sound similar. Also, they switched so many labels that there are multiple recordings of their songs in mono and stereo. But "River Deep," "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "A Fool In Love," "Nutbush City Limits," etc were all originals. But I do agree that majority of their well-known songs are covers.

  60. m.... g....

LA MEJOR POR SIEMPRE. IRREPETIBLE E INCOMPERABLE.. PURPURA, SABBATH, ZEPPELIN,AEROS Y TU MI TINA. AH Y JANNIS.

  61. s.... ....

My third album purchase after Sgt Peppers and Steppenwolf II.
    RIP Jon Lord.

  62. d.... n....

    i agree with doowopper

  63. N.... R....

@SupernalOne I may be 61, but I feel this as much, if not more, than I did in 1968. As good as their later albums were, Deep Purple's first two are unmatched.

  64. P.... N....

    really amazing
