Deep Purple - Hey Joe Lyrics

Hey Joe
Where you going with that gun in your hand
Hey Joe
Now tell me where you going with that gun in your hand
I'm gonna shoot my lady
Cos I caught her messing around with another man
Yes, I'm going down to shoot my lady
Cos I caught her messing around with another man

Hey Joe
I heard you shot your woman down
Hey Joe
I heard you shot your woman down
Right down to the ground
Yes I did I shot her
You know I shot her cos I caught her messing 'round town
Yes I did I shot her
I shot my woman cos she was messing 'round town
I gave her the gun - I shot her!

Hey Joe
Tell me where you gonna run to now?
Hey Joe
C'mon tell me where you gonna run to?
Don't you worry about me
I'm going way down South
Way down South where I'm gonna be free
I'm going way down South
Way down South maybe outside Mexico Way
I'm gonna run, oh yeah

Deep Purple Hey Joe Comments
  1. R.... n....

    *Who's Joe?*

  2. D.... ....

The beggining sounds like the theme song of an 8bit egyptian themed video game.

  3. s.... g....

There are numerous versions of Hey Joe including the most famous one by Jimi Hendrix. But to me this is by far the best one.

  4. N.... S....

die bester Version , außer Orginal.

  5. r.... b....

The very first album i ever bought .. I still have it .. OH HELLZ YEAH !!

  6. E.... ....

Heads up: It doesn't really start until 2:22. Before that there's just a bunch of Hammond organ stuff that sounds vaguely inspired by "Bolero" (perhaps trying to foreshadow Joe's escape to Mexico?).

[They return to the Bolero stuff at around 4:15 for about half a minute.]

    It's uh... ok.

"Hey Joe" is a a great song so any cover is bound to be pretty good, or at least interesting, and Purple was a good band even before Gillan made them great, so definitely worth a listen.

Interesting to hear but after all is said and done a pretty lame cover.

Hendrix's famous second cover version is of course the best cover of this great song.

[TLDR: It's no surprise that this early DP cover version was never a classic rock radio staple.]

  7. G.... ....

    Vanilla Fudge😁

  8. J.... N....

    masterpiece 🤘❤

  9. D.... B....

I really can’t believe how few views this video has. When I was growing up playing hey joe we would always do the intro part before the solo

  10. R.... ....

I picture myself watching a Clint Eastwood movie or some spaghetti western movie. I love this version of Hey Joe it's the coolest

  11. s.... s....

this is one of the worst versions.. 😅 but it's an important piece of history

  12. M.... R....

Hendrix’s version is my favorite but this one is great as well.

Try listening to "The Who's" live at Tampa version

  20. S.... M....

    Masterpiece with capital M

  21. P.... H....

Ritchie Blackmore is the most underrated guitarist. I mean we know him, but people always talk about hendrix, clapton, zappa, iommi and Page. They are great and awesome! But Blackmore is a Dr. He influenced so many famous guitarists..

I don't know shit I'm crazy hahaha.. Long Live to Deep fucking Purple!!!

Please don't kill me bcos my spanglish

  22. j.... f....

Purple's rendition is so different from Hendrix. Both are masterpieces.

    j.... f....

Did you like Type O Negative's version?

  23. e.... m....

  24. s.... p....

  30. B.... D....

Bought this Album "Shades of Deep Purple" back in 1968 at Sears in Sarasota, Fla. when I was 16 y.o. because of the hit song "Hush." Got home, played it and every song on the record was great, the work of geniuses! It's still one of my favorite albums of all time. Ritchie Blackmore (b. 1945) on guitar and Jon Lord on organ(b.1941 d. 2012) are especially amazing. Yay for Deep Purple! Among the best of the best. They defined the psychedelic era.

    B.... D....

    oh yaaaaa!!!!

    B.... D....

They did not define the psychadelic era.

  31. M.... C....

Who wrote HEY Joe. Hint it wasn't jimmy hendrix ?

    M.... C....

Yes and neither did Jimi Hendrix

  32. M.... C....

Ey fuckers. Who wrote hEY JOE IT Was nt Hendrix it was DEEP PURPLE !!!

  33. C.... V....

How come they didnt think they could evolve into a hard rock outfit with Rod & & Nick? Rod did Captain Beyond that was mind blowing & Nick did Warhorse.

    C.... V....

well to be fair ian gillan is 3000x times better than rod

  34. W.... B....

In doing an interview with Ian Paice he confirmed to me that Deep Purple wanted to be the 'British Vanilla Fudge'. And that is exactly what we hear with 'Hey Joe', a combination of the Fudge and Hendrix's slow version of the tune (the likes of the Byrds, the Leaves and others did if uptempo). But with the arrival of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover the Fudge's influence diminished, with that lineup's first album, 'In Rock', revealing the band had, despite Jon Lord's Fudge-like Hammond presence, arrived at its own unique sound.

    W.... B....

You nailed it ! Wayne...Been a Vanilla Fudge & Deep Purple right from the beginning!!~Rock & Roll

    W.... B....

Wayne Blanchard I play bass for Lance Lopez now and he owns Roger Glover’s Marshall super bass 100. It’s a monster

  35. P.... R....

    A.... A....

    Ahahahahahah ahahahahahah 😂😂😂

  46. M.... T....

I like Blackmores guitar work better than Hendrix guitar work.

  47. M.... T....

It kinda seems like Deep Purple started out with the name -Shades of Deep Purple, instead of Deep Purple. Isn't this purples first record?

    M.... T....

They started out with the name Roundabout, but did not release anything under that moniker.

  48. k.... d....

Billy Roberts wrote this song, Joe South DID however write 'Hush', which was a big hit for these guys.

  49. C.... A....

    best cover or what

  50. G.... ....

If you compare that picture of Purple with the picture on the back of Led Zep 1 - same hairstyles!

    G.... ....

LOL. Yeah man, we all had hair like that back then, unless our parents raised too much hell about it.

    G.... ....

@Bestoink Dooley: Hope you still have the hair today! :)

    G.... ....

@Bestoink Dooley: We're in the exact same boat, then! :)

Music means deep purple. Real music. Something which makes complete and perfect sense. This is the real deal. Such vibrant tones to one lovely and beautifully composed song. Perfection personified. All u need is patience and understanding.

  55. B.... V....

I'm a DP fan, but I find this tediuous to listen to. I could have done without the long winded and very unremarkable instrumental breaks.

    B.... V....

  59. G.... M....

I'm soo Happy to be able to say that I've got this on original vinyl. I picked it up at a yard sale for 25 cents the old couple didn't know who they were so they sold all these records for dirt cheap.. And it plays flawlesy.. No skips, scratches.. I got lucky on this one and the 200 others I bought from them for $25 bucks..

  65. H.... M....

Although this was many times recorded before DP did, still I can't understand why "Hush" was a small hit in USA instead of this?

    H.... M....

Small hit? Hush went to #4 in the US.

    H.... M....

@GreenerHill THIS song is much better but Hush is a hit for the girls in the clubs

  66. T.... W....

does blackmore's guitar at the 0:26 mark remind anyone of Dick Dale?

    J.... W....

I just put this on and I remember as a kid the buildup with the organ to the start of the vocals. Never since repeated in any intro ( in this shattered mind's eye)

    J.... W....

    love your comment :)

  95. e.... ....

Es buena...aunque la de Hendrix es magnífica.

  96. R.... L....

  97. E.... S....

this is track 9 on the LP ?

    E.... S....

    Yep. The last one.

  98. N.... R....

I think the first Deep Purple albums are the best albums they record both albums are master pieces. I got both albums on original vinyl

    N.... R....

GreenerHill What kind of crossover have you got in mind? To me, Mk II Purple is 100% pure hard rock.

    N.... R....

I meant crossover only in the sense of repertoire - there are no Mk.2 songs on Made in Europe. Sorry, I wasn't clear there.

    N.... R....

GreenerHill As well as you won't find any other but Mk II songs on Made in Japan. So they are similar regarding this issue. They both contain only the current lineup songs (although Made in Europe has been released after the Blackmore's departure from the band). But I wasn't referring to that in my original comment. What I meant is that Made in Japan has been recorded at the band's pinnacle (Mk II lineup) while Made in Europe, though not bad at all, depicts the band already in decline. Cause to me, as well as to zillions of Purple fans, Mk II is the best Purple lineup that has ever existed. One that made them famous, from the objective point of view. With Gillan's departure the band lost one of the five key elements (since each member of this lineup is crucial) while with the Blackmore's departure the band actually became irrelevant.

    N.... R....

Robi: All good points. I thought you were simply saying MiE was rubbish - sorry. I like Mk. 1, Mk. 2 and Mk. 3 equally, and you're right - of the three line-ups, only Mk. 2 was properly represented with a live album. MiJ is brilliant. For me, Mk. 3 was more a continuation of Mk.1 than Mk. 2, but no one ever agrees with that point! Cheers. :)

    N.... R....

Nah, Mark II is the best
