I've been listening to a lot of Purple lately, and I've come to a realization/revelation about them...and it this: they were truly the most insane 70s hard rock band of em all. By a long shot. Seriously. Ok Ian Paice seems like a steady bloke but the rest of em...Ritchie Blackmore? That dude could strum an open E chord and it would sound like a major city going up in riotous flames of vengeance. Jon Lord-one minute he decides that a little classical etude is just what this hard rock song needs, no, wait, ok, let's light this bloody organ on fire and record it wailing tortured death throes...ok then back to those sprightly arpeggios, right! Ian Gillian what the F**k! Just a wildman...he even sounds like David Coverdale on this song! Roger Glover? Dude plays bass ok? No sane human has ever picked up a bass and remained sane...which would explain why so many of the best bassists were English. So there you have it- the most insane virtuosos from a land noted for it's insanity- music, literature, Inter-City Firms, high tea, dark satanic mills etc. They were the maddest of em all. The Sun Never Sets MOTHERF***ERS!!

The DP Burn album has something special i can't explain very well. Although i really love all the Purple's albums, i would tend to say this album is my favorite. And i find that there is a pure alchemy between Glenn and David's voices. Jon Lord is a genius, as usual.

@maiden chick Ian Gillan Band and Born Again. None of them as famous as what he did in D. P. On the other hand, Coverdale is a much more powerful, lyric, complex and versatile voice. Listen Whitesnake and you'll have plenty examples. I agree with you D. P. is better with Gillan but as a voice in it self, Coverdale has no match.
