Dear Evan Hansen Cast - Hiding In Your Hands Lyrics

When it's just you and some song
That you don't know how to play
Fake your way through, strum along
Be cool and you're okay

So your fingers get tangled in a pile
Your rhythm is a mess
But nobody sees 'cause you smile
And the world will never guess

Can't let them know
'Cause no one understands
Your face can show
What you're hiding in your hands

Daughter and son, man and wife
Fill the photos on these walls
Look at the fun, perfect life
Of plastic dress-up dolls

Happy house on a quaint suburban street
The sun hangs in the sky
Everything framed nice and neat
In a lovely little lie

Can't let them know
'Cause no one understands
Your face can show
What you're hiding in your hands

La-da-da-da...

Look at her, a total trainwreck
Let her off this ride
Lift her out from all the pain
She tells herself she needs to hide

When it's just you and that song
It's impossible to play
Fake your way through, strum along
And everything's okay

Can't let them know
'Cause no one understands
Your face can show

No one understands
Your face can show
What you're hiding in your hands

La-da-da-da...

Dear Evan Hansen Cast Hiding In Your Hands Comments
  1. E.... H....

This song dives deeply into Zoe’s Character. They also use lines from the show in this song. I do like Requiem bc it shoes Zoe’s relationship with Connor, and that she does not want to miss him. I think it would be killer if they included both songs!

I got got Dear Evan Hansen tickets too!!🥰

  2. [.... ]....

So what was she hiding in her hands?? I don't get the song! Why!!?

  3. e.... o....

    King george approve this song

  4. N.... S....

The saddest songs are the ones that sound happy but are actually very sad.

  5. V.... L....

The feel of this song reminds me that of Lenka or Yael Naim's songs, and I love them so this was a delight

  6. P.... ....

This is just a musical adaption of the vine "doin just fine, i lied, I'm dieing inside"

  7. .... ....

I was so confused by the thumbnail lmao

  8. M.... S....

When my friend first showed me this song, it's happy melody completely confused me and since I was in a very positive mood that day I misinterpreted the song completely and I told them, "this song is so sweet! I love it, it had such a positive message about smiling through the troubles in life and showing people you can be strong despite those hardships!" And my friend was so confused... They told me what this song actually means and then it was my turn to be so confused but when I listened to it again a few more times I realised my mistake and I was so embarrassed and I felt so bad for how terribly I misinterpreted the song. I still feel really embarrassed about it when I think about it. I still really love the song though

  9. T.... U....

but like why isn't this in dear evan hansen though?

  10. T.... U....

even the song is hiding in it's hands. If you were to just listen to it without listening to the lyrics it sounds like a really happy song, but if you look in deep and truly hear the lyrics, you can hear it is a dark, sad song.

  11. L.... ....

    Me: crying

Friend: why are you crying? That’s such an upbeat song!

    Me: cries more

  12. P.... ....

The hook reminds me of Natsuki’s theme in Doki Doki Literature Club

  13. A.... S....

Is it "your face can't show" or "your face can show"? I'm confused

  14. A.... P....

"She simultaneously makes me feel very proud and incredibly inadequate." love that

  15. Y.... F....

Why are the cut songs so beautiful?

  16. R.... ....

I feel like I'm living in this song. In elementary school, we were the "picture perfect suburban family" but things have changed. My mom started working, my brother and I grew up a bit, and I... well let's just say some themes in this show hit a little closer to home now. but now my dad has a new job, and my mom isn't working anymore, and she wants us to go back to being that stereotypical suburban family, but that's not who we are anymore. At least it's not who I am. My life just feels so fake and trivial, and even though I related to this song on some levels before, it's almost become a narration.

  17. R.... M....

Why does this feel like an old Owl City song? I can't put my hand on what song it reminds me of.

  18. K.... L....

  20. A.... ....

I'm doing this for my talent show dance and the choreography is just on the verge of being finished! It's all because DEH has spoken to me about leaving my shell, helped me to do something!

  21. T.... a....

I love how 90% of the annotations are them fangirling over how amazing Mallory's voice is

  22. A.... L....

    I’m not crying, your crying

  23. E.... G....

They should add this into the musical. But NOT in place of requiem. It should be separate cuz it is a good song and shows zoe’s perspective on her home life. Cuz we know about evan’s but it would be nice to have zoe’s pov on it. Since requiem is about connor this is much different and ya.

  24. E.... W....

mallory's voice is so damn adorable <3

  25. S.... U....

they used a gLoCKeNsPieL hell yeaaaa

  26. E.... S....

"Its impossible to make a happy sounding song really sad"
    Zoe: *hold my internalized depression*

  29. C.... ....

See, here's the thing. I think this song could work when Connor is still alive. Think of it: Zoe confronts Connor at home about that poor kid in the hallway that he pushed for seemingly no reason. Connor doesn't tell her about the note but he argues with her. They yell and fight, it's loud and kind of overwhelming. Cynthia steps in and scolds Zoe and Zoe storms off to her room and we see her frustration and just how done she is with having to shut up and hide her opinions and the way she feels to keep her family out of chaos. We understand her better in Requiem and we see her guilt and sadness over Connor later in the musical.

Just give me more Zoe Murphy, okay.

    Headcanon accepted

  30. I.... W....

I relate to this song so much like so much that it's scary

  31. C.... ....

“Mallory sounds gorgeous here” Yeah I know man I have ears

  32. C.... M....

Sorry guys, I'm desperatly in searching of the sheet music (piano+vocal) of this masterpiece, but I can't find it anywhere. Someone has any idea?

    C.... M....

    Chiara M. Schiappapietra
So far, I know two versions. One is really difficult to explain, but the really easy version is literally just:
    C, G, Am, F.
You can then work off of that. I’ll see if I can find the chords for the other version for you 🙂

  33. S.... W....

This one is great. I think the best part about it is the vocals and instrumentals playing off of each other. I wish they could of kept this song and Reqiuem. Maybe have this song in more early of the start. Like Wavin Through a window but for Zoe. I wish this one stayed because this is the only Zoe solo.

  34. t.... ....

    ok this is iconic

  35. U.... ....

    Okay just imagine! **IMAGINATION TIME™**

If Connor cleaned up his act and started to patch things up with Zoe and she sang this to him. Then they painted eachothers nails.

    Okay I'll leave now.

  36. A.... W....

    mallory is my favorite zoe

  37. S.... O....

I feel like this had a sort of similar vibe as ‘Obvious’. Love both songs, though I get why they were cut.

  38. R.... ....

But what IS she hiding in her hands???

  39. M.... M....

lowkey i thought what was hiding in your hands was her face but then i realized that it was most likely Connors hands, cut up hands and i bRoke

  40. s.... b....

this song is so important to me. i have lost my older brother, and hearing this song reminds me of exactly how i felt when he left. i needed to be strong (even though i was nine at the time) because my mom was so broken and my dad had to keep our lives together. i had to hide all of my grief and stay strong. this song is so beautiful and important to me. even though this song did not end up in the show, i am thankful there is a recording of it. thank you.

    s.... b....

    WHAT?!?!?! *mind blown*

  41. P.... S....

Is Zoe sweet or is she a bitch? Can’t really tell

  42. o.... h....

Replace all the 'la da da's with the 'la da da's from You'll Be Back... it's great lol

    o.... h....

Sometimes I sing this and suddenly it gets mixed up with You'll Be Back or vice versa and I stand like "wuuuut?" lol

  43. A.... A....

I can relate to Zoe so much in this song

  44. c.... g....

This makes me think of Via from Wonder. Now that I think about it, they have pretty similar personalities

    c.... g....

I have always found Via and Zoe so similar! Looks like I’m not the only one!

    c.... g....

@Hamchung 77 Yeah, they actually have a lot in common

  51. L.... B....

This song inspired me to learn ukelele

  52. J.... W....

That's why Connor wasn't inviting to any bar mitzvah parties. It's because he's not Jewish; not because is was a "bad person".

  54. E.... B....

    How is someone so talentedddd

  55. C.... S....

Aw, this song is just tragic. It definitely gets her sadness and pain through much better than requiem, though both are amazing.

  56. M.... A....

“She simultaneously makes me feel proud and incredibly inadequate” lol me too bud

  57. V.... S....

    Damn this hit deep

  58. T.... M....

    Mallory is sooooo talented!!!!

  59. a.... p....

    Ummm me

  60. T.... ....

Mallory’s delivery is literal perfection. It’s like I’m listening to music with a brand new set of ears.

  61. A.... V....

I love Mallory Bechtel so much!! Her voice is so smooth and gentle and I just love it! Perfect for Zoe.

  62. T.... U....

I love this?????? So much????? I wish this was in the show

Also 3:32 is how I feel listening to anyone sing

  63. B.... B....

I feel like a great music video to this would be someone (zoe) sitting in front of the camera with only the top of her chest showing (above the boobs and bare). Then at the end before the la da das, she stands up and shows that she's fully clothed underneath. Idk, it just kinda feels like you think you know her but then you realise that she's been hiding so much from you

  64. C.... T....

*accidentally listens to it 100 times*

  65. I.... R....

2:38 she tells herself she need to *die

  66. M.... M....

Okay unpopular opinion here you have been warned

I love Mallory and her live performance I saw of this song was incredible but I don’t think the studio version sounded very good! It is too auto tuned and too bright!!

  67. A.... K....

I can relate to this so much right now, though I do think Requiem was the better choice, I still wish this was in the show.

  68. T.... K....

"Be cool and you're okay" Ouuuccchhh my heeaarrrttttttt. If you threw in a sniffle at the very end of that I would be sobbing instead of crying quietly so my parents don't hear.

  69. H.... ....

Did Mallory Bechtel write the song?

  70. T.... G....

I find that this song completely fits me

  71. r.... s....

    Its really clever composition!!!

  72. L.... R....

This song wouldn’t have matched the mood of DEH so it’s glaringly obvious to me why it didn’t make it, but it’s so cute! I’m glad they released it, it’s such a sweet and nice song. 🥰

  73. M.... F....

I resonate with this song so much. That it is exactly how I feel about my place in my family. Pretend it's okay and avoid the conflict. Don't bother others with your issues, it will only make it worse.

I've always had trouble putting this feeling into words and this song actually really helps me. Thank you.

Also, It is so perfect in sense that it sounds so sweet on the outside but it's "hiding" a message that is real and sad

  74. T.... o....

Her voice is beautiful. And the song is so good. Blessed.

  75. P.... C....

As a teenager, I can sadly relate to "hiding in my hands"

  76. D.... F....

Although Requiem does delve more into Zoe and Connor's relationship, this song focuses a bit more on Zoe and how she perceives her family, Requiem is more up close, this is a bit of a third person view, which is probably why I love it so much, instead of it showing her relationship it more talks about how she sees her family. In the actual show we see how she feels about her relationship with Connor and his death on a deeper level, but this is just the simple truth that the story needed, of how fake her family is, we get to know a bit more about Zoe, this song leads me to understand her a bit more, I love Zoe, I really do, but at first Requiem made me feel she was a bit selfish, and maybe she is, I felt angry at her, and honestly? I still do, but this song did help me understand more how she felt before Connor died, day to day life in the Murphy house hold. For me this song sort of normalizes her more if that makes sense, all in all I think this song is extremely important to her character, and should have been kept in the show. On another note Mallory was made to sing this song, absolutely beautiful, amazing as always to everyone who was apart of creating this.

  77. g.... i....

I love how it's a happy tune to lyrics so dark, it really shows that she's hiding depression with smiles and fake happiness

  78. A.... M....

at first i thought the song was a bit cliche and happy sounding, but i gave it a chance and i realized how clever it was. they took a sad song and disguised it as a happy little tune. also i am in love with the melodies and the ukulele and mallory’s voice!! it’s all wonderful!!

  79. D.... S....

Those TEN people who disliked this..... mustve been an accident!

  83. P.... C....

I.. didn’t really like this song. I get what sort of vibe they were trying to get at here, but it just didn’t fit with the rest of the soundtrack. It feels like something Zoe would like to sing, but I don’t like how heavy the ‘aesthetic’ vibe is here.

    P.... C....

I loved the lyrics, and the tune by itself was AMAZING, but it just doesn’t feel right with the soundtrack
The lyrics fits REALLY FUCKING WELL though

  84. M.... K....

You all know that kid in high school that kept writing the same song over and over and thought they were a genius because they were so ~deep~ and swore they were going places? I'm pretty sure they wrote this song

  85. C.... ....

Oof. This song hits home really hard for me.

  86. E.... P....

I love the desperation in the lyrics of the bridge. Gives such a contrast to the rest of the song and the true loneliness she feels in her family and her world- a feeing she too shares with both Connor and Evan.

Also, the “la-da-da’s” also give off the vibe that she’s trying to comfort herself from her own loneliness. Such incredible writing from Pasek & Paul!

  87. G.... E....

    THIS. GAVE. ME. CHILLS.

Yesterday I had a bad wave of anxiety and this honestly made me feel so much better.

  88. c.... ....

this sounds like something out of sesame street. they could not come up with anything more complex?

  89. m.... ....

  90. A.... J....

    This is so damn beautiful

  91. N.... O....

This songs is gleefully stabbing me in the chest

  92. -.... ....

It kinda reminds me of the song "I do Adore" for some reason

  93. M.... T....

It's so beautiful! She is amazing. Wish I could see her perform in person... sadly dont have any money

  94. E.... R....

i dont think i can listen to this song without tearing up or crying, it hits hard, beautiful song sung with a beautiful voice!

  95. d.... d....

Um Mallory is an actual disney princess. If she doesnt voice/act as a Disney princess one day I will scream. Also I want a uke just to learn this song. (I may have or may not have just listened to this song 5 times on repeat)

  96. P.... ....

Deh jus made so many songs, so many people relate too!

  97. G.... ....

"There's nothing like your smile, sort of... subtle, and perfect, and *r e a l*"

  98. Z.... ....

I thought this was gonna be about Evan's sweaty hands anxiety, lol
