Darin, Bobby - The Curtain Falls Lyrics

Off comes the make up
Off comes the clown's disguise
The curtain's fallin'
The music softly dies.

But I hope your smilin'
As you're filin' out the door
As they say in this biz
That's all there is... there isn't anymore.

We've shared a moment
And as the moment ends
I got a funny feelin'
We're parting now as friends.

Your cheers and laughter will linger after
They've torn down these dusty walls
If I had this to do again
And the evening were new again
I would spend it with you again
But now the curtain falls.

Your cheers and laughter will linger after
They've torn down these dusty walls
People say I was made for this
Nothin' else would I trade for this
And just think I get paid for this...

"Goodnight ladies and gentlemen and God love you, thank you."

Darin, Bobby The Curtain Falls Comments
  1. s.... H....

simply, simply so outstanding that it isn't fair to other singers. No song today is this good or as good a Bobby Darin. We will never again see the likes of Frank, Bobby, Dean and all the other crooners.

  2. P.... G....

When I first heard this, it touched me so deeply. I imagined I was there watching him perform this song. This reaches my soul. Thanks Bobby.

  3. L.... G....

Definitely one of the most underrated singers ever

  4. M.... B....

I seen beyond the sea on TV the other night Bobby darin is a smashing person

  5. M.... M....

What a song! You can put a lot of different interpretations to this song, but it still all turns out to be sad in the end

  6. s.... f....

Am totally addicted to Bobby Darin the singer and all his songs. Nobody can duplicate his singing prowess. I get goosebumps every time I listen to his song and watch him perform. He puts all his raw emotion in every song that touches the core of my heart. His early and abrupt demise was a complete loss to the music industry. He is now an incredible legend. His songs will continue to dwell in my heart.

  7. M.... L....

I love this song by Bobby! He said he heard it and said he'd like to sing it so had it arranged for him and it's what he closed his show with often. The curtain fell too soon for Bobby, at age 37, a remarkable talent, who played several instruments, wrote lyrics, composed music and had great stage presence when he performed.

  8. J.... ....

only just discovered him, as soon as it started, my eyes filled up..

  12. M.... L....

I wish I had known about this song when I was performing!  It's a great way to end your last set!  Beautiful song; Bobby heard it and requested the song so he could sing it and he performs it so well!

  13. D.... ....

I just found this, could someone tell me what genre this is, please? It's wonderful.

  14. M.... S....

My God!! Bobby was talented!! Miss him!! How unfair life is...

I been listening to Bobby do this song for years and still can't get enough of it. Bobby was made for this. I'm an ex entertainer and understand how he must have loved this song. I miss it so much.

  30. j.... a....

    beautiful!

  31. M.... S....

I have made comments before about The about the masterful Bobby Darin . Yet, what is it about this man with the most beautiful voice..the innate, superb voice soaring upwards..that makes me stop whatever I am doing..sit..and listen with awe at the elegance, timing and beauty..for that what it is, of his rendition of The Curtain Falls...that takes my breath away..takes me back to those very very early American clips of him that we were so lucky to get on Australian tv somehow...he wanted to best Sinatra as a crooner..Well,, Mr Darin..you did..and I like Sinatra. Not a crooner...that does not give justice to your talent. A musician is more like it..you utilised your voice, your ability...and, as I mentioned..you soared. How I love you, and your voice, and your wonderful sense of rhythm, Mr Bobby Darin. I adore you singing with Johnny Mercer..How lucky i was to find that album..It is almost painful to hear you sing..so beautiful...Miss You!!

  32. s.... H....

just great. thats all thats needs to be said.

  33. C.... D....

Bobby Was the master a True perfectionist

  34. M.... L....

I'm back to hear Bobby sing this again.  Bobby's curtain fell way too soon, I think that with today's modern medicine, he would have probably had a heart transplant, or the newer artificial heart valves, and extended his life. He KNEW he wouldn't live long, was told he'd probably not live past age 16, but he did, and we have a lot to remember him by, but not enough. Thank you, Bobby, for giving us so much while you were here!
"The Curtain Falls" is still one of my favorite songs, (I think Bobby heard this song and told his people to arrange it for him to close, on in his shows -- great pianist also!).  THANK YOU FOR THIS SITE SO WE CAN ALWAYS HEAR IT!  (I have this on my task bar, I love it so much, certainly the song itself, but especially because no one sings it like Bobby Darin!

  35. D.... W....

The Curtain Falls was composed by my father Sol Weinstein. He was on an early talk show hosted by Jerry Lester. Darin was also on the show and Lester sang the Curtain Falls, apparently badly. After the show, Darin talked to my dad and asked if he could use the song. Darin ended up using it to close his nightclub routines for many years.

    D.... W....

Thanks for the insight David. Your father wrote a truly great song.

    D.... W....

Your father wrote a truly great song.

    D.... W....

he did and sung by a great artist!

    D.... W....

Thank you for sharing this. Your father wrote an incredibly beautiful song. Darin just makes this song so unforgettable, I think it truly was written for him in the end. But with his fragile heart, I think he knew each performance might be his last.

  36. C.... D....

I get émotional about Life when i hear Bobby sing this song

  37. M.... S....

    beeautiful..simply beautiful..

  38. J.... C....

I cannot put into any type of words what Bobby Darin meant to me. I have loved him since my mom sang to us in the tub ('62) and guess which song. The rest is great HISTORY OF A GREAT MAN!. I LOVE YOU BOBBY AND I KNOW I WILL SEE YOU SOMEDAY. Jan Chiodo Wilhelm six nation's NY

  39. E.... T....

Singing this song at my high school graduation in front of a couple thousand people. I pray to God that I do it justice.

  43. P.... D....

The song was written for Bob Hope, but Bobby made it his own.

  44. I.... 9....

My first mancrush ever!! Oooh so good looking and ooooh so talented. Played about 7 different instruments. Incredible actor nominated for Oscar. And never complained or let on he was dying. Raised money for the American Heart Association. Love and miss you Walden Robert Cossatto.

  45. r.... k....

Only got to see him once. He played a hotel in NOLA. My 1st nightclub. He ended the show with this number. Still my favorite.

    r.... k....

  55. E.... O....

I came here from a KCRW podcast with John Krasinski and I'm sure glad I found this.

    E.... O....

I love every song that Bobby ever sang but this one has to be in my top three! ! !

  56. l.... ....

Love this song sung by the best, Bobby Darin. Bobby you were gone too soon. But your not forgotten.

  57. C.... P....

    Magnificent. End. Of. Story.

  58. G.... C....

😍 I want this played at my homegoing....

  59. D.... L....

Does anyone else hear a hint of Elvis in his voice?

    D.... L....

Elvis came to Bobby's shows to learn how to be an entertainer. There is a video of the two of them on here, Elvis was there to watch Bobby perform.

    D.... L....

Not a smidgen. Nada. Not even close.

    D.... L....

Both amazing. They were good friends. My 2 favorite singers.

    D.... L....

NEVER!!!..sorry..couldn't help it! 2 great, but different entertainers..However, David..I do know what you are referring to..

  60. R.... M....

You may not know this song was written originally for Eddie Fisher.

    R.... M....

wrong. see my earlier comment on this.

  61. t.... ....

This man was simply a brilliant singer and all around entertainer. They don't make em like this anymore.

  62. B.... ....

The best performer that has been on this earth.

  63. M.... L....

(I wish I had known of this song when I was performing, I would have used it instead of "The Party's Over" and a couple more I used to close the set.) Bobby Darin OWNS this song -- no one else can come close.  This has become a favorite of mine that he does!  (The Orchestra and especially the pianist here is superb.)  I love the way he changes the beat at 0:22.  Very nice.  Others do it, but not like Bobby!  What a remarkable artist he was, and one of the great entertainers of his time, and maybe way beyond!  He could do it all, sing, play several instruments, act, do impressions, terrific talent. RIP Bobby, we miss you!

  64. D.... L....

Nobody can or will sing this song better than Bobby D.

    D.... L....

    David Lee TOTALLY AGREE!!!

  65. E.... P....

    We miss you Bobby

The most beautiful male voice of all time. WE LOVE YOU, WALDEN ROBERT CASSOTTO!
The curtain will fall on each and every one of us, but YOU will be remembered and loved through the ages, as long as people hear your music and see your acting GREATNESS.

    h.... ....

    Ditto!!!!

  68. h.... ....

Thank you very much, Violet. This BD-LOVER had not heard this one before! It is, as usual, EXQUISITE and PERFECT. THANK YOU. Subscribed.

Bobby darín maravilloso cantante que voz mas. Preciosa

  70. R.... T....

    grande artista!! inigualavel!!

  71. R.... H....

God bless everyone who has given a positive comment about Bobby Darin; he was simply wonderful and I'm glad I am not alone in seeing that!

    R.... H....

Throughout the history of our inept corporate greed-controlled culture, the exceptional/great have not been appreciated as much as the mediocre. Be comforted to know that you have exquisite taste and sophistication, Richard!

    R.... H....

You are correct, of course, greed is rampant in our society on almost all levels now, -- things are not at all like they used to be.  Everyone is so money-oriented it's getting preposterous.  Bobby Darin was one of the greats.   90% of singers today simply can NOT compare with the old greats.  Some try to do the old songs, but they're all over the keyboard, no one does them straight and clear anymore, and it ruins them.

    R.... H....

Richard H , me too. For year’s I thought I was the only one who thought that. Until I discovered You Tube a couple year’s ago. Now I know to what extent He was and still is Loved and I’m spreading the word.....🎶💕💜🎶💕💜🎶R.I.P. Bobby . We’ve got this Handled. 💜👏🎶💜👏🎶💜

    R.... H....

Richard H.....he was pure talent. Left us too soon. We should consider ourselves fortunate that we were able to enjoy his talent.

  72. W.... H....

The sad part is that ALL the casinos that Bobby knew HAVE now been knocked down..........
But thank God for Kevin Spacey - HE gave us the best story of Bobby!!
(and those idiots in Hollywood gave the Oscar to some other idiot!!!!)

    W.... H....

Please. Millions of us knew all about Walden Robert Cassotto without Kevin Spacey capitalizing on him.

    W.... H....

Yeah, you snot, but without that movie I would have never found this song...

    W.... H....

You are right on both counts!  Vegas just isn't the same as it was in the 60s through about '75!  Of course the entertainers are much different and so are the crowds -- we like the old scene much better!  Spacey did a great job on that doc!

    W.... H....

You shouldn't see it like that... Spacey is famous, he could have easily found a more rentable picture to film. I'm sure he loves Bobby as we all do.

    W.... H....

You are so right, I had many trips there years ago, such happy, fun memories of The Sands, Frontier, Dunes, Pioneer, Nevada Club, Desert Inn, where the big names ruled, and so many places, that are gone now. I guess the Sahara is still there, not sure. I'm not even sure I would like Las Vegas again without those familiar landmarks and faces. Sometimes change is difficult. I used to fly in to McCarran Field when it was small and had only 2 or 3 slot machines, and now it's an international airport! Oh well....

  73. C.... ....

listening to him sing takes me to a place I don't want to come back from.......

    C.... ....

Yeah, the 20th Century, it's a better "place" to be, but the devil keeps dragging us into the 20WORST century.

    C.... ....

hategreed1 I'm in the latter part of my 30s and I'll tell ya, I would have rather grown up.in the 50's....iconic music and singers...a much more simple life, you didn't have to lock your doors, you knew your neighborhors, people had parties ever weekend. People were classy! I don't like the segregation, that was ignorance bur everything else...nothing will ever compare. It makes me sad to think it's gone.

    C.... ....

    hategreed1

Yep... These End Times aren't any fun...

    C.... ....

    Best comment I’ve ever seen.

  74. C.... ....

    How very poignant.

  75. L.... G....

wow... really brings a tear to one's eye

    L.... G....

    Luc canale-marchand ...me too...

    L.... G....

Luc canali-marchand YES , IT DID TO ME!!!

    L.... G....

I agree, I  tear up every time I hear this, I'm not sure why, whether because the song is SO beautiful, or if it's just because Bobby was taken from us far too soon and we miss his remarkable talent, whatever, we're grateful he recorded this song so we can hear it and remember how superb an entertainer he was!

  76. J.... G....

The curtin will fall for us all. Time does this to all.

  77. K.... D....

I love him, such a talent, breaks my heart he had to leave us, but we remember him, we will never forget him, and we miss him so much to this day !

    K.... D....

Each of us is leaving us. We should just celebrate always everything that he GAVE us.

    K.... D....

I agree, and I do, I listen to him often, remembering just the videos, I was born too late to see him in person, but I am so thankful to be able to hear this man with his great sense of humor that my parents (now both passed) adored so much, each time I hear him it touches something in my heart, I am so happy that the videos remain, him singing, him joking around especially with Dodd his son, they all take my breath away

  78. T.... R....

God, what a singer, miss you Bobby Darin. And your kind of music....

  79. S.... ....

    Amazing Song

  80. s.... ....

Written by Sol Weinstein, what a wonderful song.

    s.... ....

Sol's lyrics of this song are unforgettable, and so apropos for many reasons; he was primarily known for his novels but this song is exceptional.  He wrote it for Bobby's closing act.  MANY have copied Bobby since and closed with this number, including me!  But no one does it like Bobby Darin.

    s.... ....

the late Sol Weinstein, my father, wrote the song and it was performed in the early 60's by talk show host Jerry Lester. It so happened that Bobby Darin was on that show. Jerry Lester sang it, badly according to my dad, but Darin liked it and after the show asked if he could use it in his act. The rest is history. Kevin Spacey recently sang it at the end of the 2017 Tony Awards.

    s.... ....

God bless your Dad for giving this wonderful song to the world.

    s.... ....

David Weinstein WONDERFUL! Thanks a million to your DAd for composing this song, and for agreeing to BD's request!!!

  82. H.... G....

I always get chills when I hear this sung by Bobby Darin. Simply beautiful

    H.... G....

I agree with you -- it does the same thing to me!  Gives me goose bumps, grabs me right down to my soul!  It's Bobby's song, no doubt!

    H.... G....

i agree with you -- it has a special meaning because his last stage performance, he said in essence, that he wouldn't be performing for "quite a while" -- I guess he knew he was going to have heart-valve surgery again, and he always knew his days were numbered, due to rheumatic fever at age 8, that left his heart damaged, as it often does.
I was a musician for years, and I wish I had known about this song, I probably would have closed with it instead of the one or two numbers I always used, (like "The Party's Over" which doesn't hold a candle to "The Curtain Falls" but when I think about it, maybe that was best, because Bobby singing it always makes my eyes water!

  83. T.... R....

This song is nothing but great

    T.... R....

Me too when I heard it the first time.

    T.... R....

Bobby sang it like no one sang it even Bob Hope who Bobby Darin got it from.

  84. D.... A....

De los mejores cantantes de JAZZ en la historia de la música contemporánea. El jazz definido por Julio Cortázar; una música que permite todas la imaginaciones.

    D.... A....

    verdade!!

  85. M.... C....

i love this song Bobby was brillant very sadly missed he life on this earth was to short

    M.... C....

It makes me sad because Bobby KNEW his life wouldn't be very long, he thought he'd be gone before he was 30, but he did last longer -- great for us.  I think today, with heart valves improved and cardiac surgery improved, he would have made it much longer.  But he certainly made good use of his time while he was here -- one of the better all-round talents in the 20th century.

  86. E.... S....

Bobby Darin is the only person that I like singing this wonderful song…….  I have heard others but this is the most touching of all…….  Bobby puts every bit of himself into each and every song he sings…….  this is total perfection as far as I am concerned by the master himself…… Bobby is the truest of entertainers who gave of himself holding nothing back…… Mr. Perfectionist all the way….  sadly we lost Bobby on December 20th, 1973 far too early…… but thankfully we have all his recordings to listen to and remember him by……. gone but never forgotten, loved dearly, missed every day, remembered forever more…… RIP BOBBY DARIN!!!!!!
Thanks for this one……… it's just beautiful.

    E.... S....

Who? BD is the only one I've heard do this

    E.... S....

Kevin Spacey did Bobby proud paying tribute to him by singing this and his other songs with respect and class.

    E.... S....

    well said

    E.... S....

Kevin Spacy does a passable job in the movie of Darin's life, where he played Bobby, but of course, Bobby is inimitable and no one will ever be able to sing it with the same kind of emotion, hesitations, tone and magic that he gave it!

    E.... S....

I totally agree, he was a true pro
