Dan Fogelberg - Nexus Lyrics

Across the vein of night
There cuts a path of searing light
Burning like a beacon
On the edges of our sight
At the point of total darkness
And the lights divine divide
A soul can let its shadow stretch
And land on either side - either side.

And balanced on the precipice
The moment must reveal
Naked in the face of time
Our race within the wheel
As we hang beneath the heavens
And we hover over hell
Our hearts become the instruments
We learn to play so well.

Wealthy the spirit that knows its own flight
Stealthy the hunter who slays his own fright
Blessed the traveler who journeys the length of the light.

Outside the pull of gravity
Beyond the spectral veil
Within our careful reasoning
We search to no avail
For the constant in the chaos
For the fulcrum in the void
Following a destiny
Our steps cannot avoid.

Across the vein of night
There cuts a path of searing light
Burning like a beacon
On the edges of our sight
At the point of total darkness
And the lights divine divide
A soul can let its shadow
Stretch and land on either side.

Wealthy the spirit that knows its own flight
Stealthy the hunter who slays his own fright
Blessed the traveler who journeys the length of the light.

In a spiral never-ending
Are we drawn towards the source
Spinning at the mercy of an unrelenting force
So we stare into the emptiness and fall beneath the weight
Circling the Nexus in a fevered dance with fate -

Wealthy the spirit that knows its own flight
Stealthy the hunter who slays his own fright
Blessed the traveler who journeys the length of the light.

I didn't even realize this album was out until I heard this song on the radio while I was away at college. FM, of course. I said damn, that sounds like Fogelberg, have to check the record store. Bought it the next day..

Incredible poetic and musical talent on guitar and piano,, seriously underappreciated as is Steve Winwood ...

  11. D.... B....

What a ball I had trying to play along with Dan to the LP of this back in the early 80s. His talent only pushed me to aspire to his.

  12. a.... ....

I cannot express the soul-deep gladness this song always evokes. The first time I heard it I was regaining consciousness and it was like being drawn into wakefulness by heavenly light, I swear. Still, after more than 35 years it brings tears at its sheer beauty.

  13. D.... M....

Dan Fogelberg wrapped up the 70s with this masterpiece

  14. T.... T....

Absolutely brilliant song, one of my favorites from Dan.

I have The Innocent Age on vinyl, cassette, and CD. Probably my favorite album of all time. 💙

I was a heavy record buyer and my local store gave the "Home Free" LP, and some other titles for free, when it first came out. Took it home a played it and -jaw on the floor! Pure Americana and love it to this day. I think it's a crime that they messed with the speed of "Long Way Home" (too fast) on the CD release.

  16. M.... W....

One of the best concerts I remember as a wee young rocker. 1980 in Hartford,CT late in the year, so he did play Same Auld Lang Syne. Great memory

Joni and Dan's voices braid together seamlessly - wealthy the spirit! If you ever want to get away and visit another dimension simply: as dusk is turning to night, light a candle and lie down on your bed with earphones on with 'Ghosts' playing directly into your brain. By the end of the song if you don't have goosebumps over your whole body, you are a robot. ;-)

He put so much time into perfecting his playing, his voice so strong, his spirit so passionate and his heart so sweet. He lives on forever in our hearts. Thank you Dan for sharing your incredible songs with us. Wealthy is his spirit......

  26. d.... ....

Vintage Fogelberg what a songwriter he was.

  27. b.... ....

This is Joni Mitchell singing background on this song. Emmylou Harris is on "Only The Heart May Know".   This is for Jack Ripper, below!!!

it will take me days to cover in music my life my feelings and situation and the future with the help of god and his son and his words [email protected]

I love the drum break, and the talking drum at 4:15 is great. I've wanted a talking drum ever since hearing this. Interesting, this album was released after Phoenix, but was recorded first.

  30. D.... C....

also....I was there looking to buy a horse for a client...nothing more - albeit I would not have disliked it - hahahaha Dan was a WONDERFUL man and invited me to stay for dinner yet I declined - DOH

  31. D.... C....

Yes I spent an afternoon with him - I will cherish that w/e in 1987 forever!! I cry often even to this day - I know his first wife Maggie very well - she TOO is a gem and MANY of hos songs were written for her!

  32. J.... D....

You met Dan Fogelberg? As a fan of his, playing his music on my guitar, and knowing what it means to be a 'musician', I know how difficult it is to do what he did. For almost 40 years! It is my one regret that I was never able to see him in concert or to otherwise meet him. He is the single most talented musician I've ever heard. I'm not even asking you about your experience: That should be yours. But in some way, your simple remark spoke to me of kindness received. I hope he was a decent man.

  33. J.... D....

    It's Emmy Lou Harris.

  34. 8.... ....

God damn it, why did such a great muscian have to have his life cut short..... Rest In Peace Dan Fogelburg, Rest In Peace.

    8.... ....

89Eldin the answer is very simple around 2001 when he turned 50 years old he never had a simple PSA prostate check done for prostate cancer and less than five and a half years later it would kill him when they found out that he had it it was a little too late and just before Christmas in 2007 we lost him

  35. B.... B....

My favourite song on this album is Times Like These.

  36. A.... ....

I first discovered this album while going through my moms old records. I intently fell in love with this song. Such beautiful lyrics and the music is such fun to dance to.

miss you DGF - I'll treasure that afternoon at the ranch with you until I die

    D.... C....

deb.......why did you decline dinner invitation?

  40. S.... J....

This is one of the many gems Dan did. He never really did a bad album. He is one of my favorite musicians. R.I.P. Dan. We all miss you.

  41. M.... M....

I have thought for some time that this album represented the high water mark for soft rock.

  42. D.... G....

A reflection on death from a man who, unexpectedly, would soon meet it. Does hu man courage in the face of death matter? I have faced death several times, sometimes flinching, sometimes shaking and tearing. Now, death stalks me and not from my daring. I reach for God, knowing I must be purged first, and fearing that mercy even as I welcome it.

  43. S.... ....

This is the epitome of the greatest Dan Fogelberg music that there is, and we all know there is much more to remember, and cherish.
This album was one of my favorites back, O, about acentury ago. Why are there not musicians like this out there any more. I miss the 80's

  44. T.... T....

I love this song! it's great!!

  45. e.... r....

    I want to dance. :)

Sunday Morning, Asheville North Carolina, August 28, 2011 Thank You Dan Fogelberg. The Innocent Age is simply put an absolutely brilliant song cycle covering the human experience from cradle to grave. It would have been an excellent choice for the soundtrack to the movie "The Tree of Life" by Terrence Malick.

    Mark Smith Curtis

  49. L.... ....

When I was little, I thought he was singing "And the lights divine, divine." instead of "And the lights divine divide." lol. I have grown up loving Dan, and I miss his presence as a fellow musician. Miss you Dan.

  50. c.... ....

I find it amazing that, with the exception of "Part of the Plan" and holiday playings of "Another Auld Lang Syne", his music is all but forgotten on radio. On the other hand, "Free Bird" gets an almost daily playing.

    c.... ....

Then you're listening to the wrong radio station!

  51. b.... ....

Best Album EVER. I wore the vinyl out so I bought the CD

  52. T.... S....

Dan was a one in a million musician, a literal musical genius. It will be some time before there is another who is of his caliber, if ever.

  53. T.... F....

@TheReach1 Love your sentiment ... I also cry every single time I hear, "The Reach." Appreciating your name. :-)

  54. T.... F....

@Guitarded11 I agree ~ this is THE perfect song. It is really "epic" & "majestic" in it's musicality & message & in all other ways. I also love that Joni Mitchell chimes in on this one - she's another of my favorite genius songwriters.

  55. D.... M....

    greatest dan Fogelberg song ever

  56. P.... ....

    @DANSFANFOREVER
I would agree with you on "the path he blazed for us" mostly the quality of life I found that he shared through his music. His music was a life learning experience which led me to treat people with respect and compassion.

  57. h.... ....

Beautiful, magical music! Dan's talent is blessedly timeless! Thank you for this posting.

    We miss you, Dan...

  58. J.... H....

Not a day goes by that I don't think of Dan or miss him or the presence of his beautiful soul on our planet. I owe him so much that I will never be able to repay...all I could do is follow the path he blazed for us...and just love. Rest in Peace Dan...I look toward the day when I can once again be in your presence. Thank you mydarlinglana for posting this...it's always been a favorite of mine.

    J.... H....

    are you his ex wife?

  59. a.... ....

I had every one of Dan Fogelberg's albums in college - each one helped me through a different period in my life. As I listened to this song, my mind was flooded with memories of surviving a breakup and becoming stronger from it. Thank you, Dan Fogelberg. May you rest in peace with the leader of the band...

  60. p.... ....

it's not nonexistent, its just that there's so much junk out there that it dilutes the overall music population

  61. d.... ....

i discovered dan fogelberg a couple years ago when i was digging through some of my mom's old casette tapes. thank god she never threw them out, or i might never have heard this wonderful, wonderful song.

  62. C.... S....

No. She sings the duet on "Only The Heart May Know." Joni Mitchell features on "Nexus."

  63. E.... H....

This is one of my favorite songs by Dan Fogelberg. He was a very spiritual man. Thank you for this and so many other wonderful songs.

  64. P.... K....

I had this album my senior year of high school and have always pictured a highly energized dance routine done to "the Nexus" My kids are in dance classes now and this song would bring a little bit of class and dignity to our recitals in comparision to the other music played. PK in McKenna

  65. s.... ....

While I'm thinking of Dan Fogelberg, have you ever heard his Netherlands Lp? Wow, now there's a fantastic album. Man, I've got to get my records out of the closet! Time to make some MP3s : )

  66. s.... ....

Love this album. I remember getting it for Xmas when I was living in a studio apt.(my first) when I was about 22. I could listen to this song over and over and never tire of its lilting and tumbling whirl of chords and harmonies. Dan was the best of the Balladeers. He could make you cry, or rock your socks off. Thanks Lana for a great song down memory lane. Oh, and Lana was the first women I was engaged to. It didn't turn out the way I planned. : /

  67. m.... ....

    nice ^_^

  68. m.... ....

no problems...im glad and I know he would be too to hear that his music was able to help someone's soul :)
