Damned, The - Lively Arts Lyrics
I'm gonna stay in bed all day
I'm not gonna hear a word you say
It's gonna be a life of style for me
Electric blankets, pillows, fire and TV
Those lively arts are on the slide
And culture's just a bore
When you're angry young and poor
And if I got my way
Those idle rich would pay
When the discussion starts
On the lively arts
I'm gonna be a lazy slob
Sod the folks and sod the job
And in a week I'll be here still
Yes I will
Take a look outside
Those lively arts are on the slide
And culture's just a bore
When you're angry young and poor
And if I got my way
Those idle rich would pay
When the discussion starts
On the lively arts

Damned, The Lively Arts Comments
Reminds me of bunking off work when I was 16!
I always thought this song had a KILLER bass line! Gives the early Stranglers a run-for-the-$$$!
By the end I feel like I've been blasted into space or something.
The damned were taking the piss in ignorance because the Idle Rich are not Idle or Rich through lack of work. The rich work hard to preserve their wealth and pay no tax. Haha.
Taxation is theft surely.
One of my favourite damned songs
without doubt The Damned were/are the best band EVER!
me love this
Love the lyrics...done it myself..” fuck it, ain’t doing anything...hardcore laziness rebellion” ! As for fuck the job, used to be able to do that and get another one the next week..or day! Everyone’s slaving away these days, just to eat and pay the rent...that’s fucked up... zero hour contracts! FFS why do people take that shit?
Started blasting the damned out at 12yrs old im 49 now n still blasting them out rip bryn xxxxx
They're timeless
♥♥♥♥♥
Great song. Great album.
Great track, these guys were my punk rock heroes for a good stretch of my adolescents
Orchestration by Hans Zimmer....
Okay, this needs more likes. Come on, people!
Listening to this today on my smartphone.
right?! haha
Rock n f**ckin' roll. Love this band. No other band went out there in their day just to give the audience a good time, was usually just political bullshit. This was rock. We call it punk rock, but breaking it down to brass tacks, this was/IS rock n roll.
Immer wieder geil !
Not gonna hear the words you say.
Clegg and Cameron head off eachother for votes. WANKERS. Liberally dispensed Fascism.
A live version of Teenage Dream was on the b-side, and I think that a short version of I'm So Bored was, as well, on the 12 inch.
+Phelim Heming correct, although i dont believe its a 12
l iked this band from 79' a punk band yes a creative band of musicians a huge yes
ok you say its shit say it to the damned faces then knob head
its not metal you fuckin mong its punk or you f stupid and cant tell the friggin difference
ok that is your opinion. I respect it. To me that is one hell of a great song. Ok the sound is not tip top (the song is 30 years old) but the mood and the character of the song is great
Sound is tip top.
GREAT tune!
Lively Arts by The Damned. Another timeless classic.
@alecmartin88 You're looking too deep, take from it what you can, lyrics, music, whatever...and enjoy.
@panzermort
Saying fuck it and choosing to be a lazy sod (stuff the folks and sod the dog) that sorta thing!
this live is fangtastic seen the damned last night in manchester blew manchester away
@banditbronable I never liked Mclaren, or any of his ideas. However, he did leave a large footprint in the 70's when punk began. Like it or loath it, he did market the genre as a whole, but the true talent shone though in the end, with bands such as The Damned (of course), The Stranglers (my fave), and The Clash, and a multitude of others. The point is, whilst he was lining his pockets ripping off The Pistols, he inadvertantly made other bands money.
Ok, i get that this song is about monging out... but I cant figure out what the whole reference to the lively arts means. Does anyone have any insight as to what this song actually means?
love them love them!!!!!!!!!!!and you under me .i agree!!!!best band then and still love it.
fuck the clash etc.etc.
@Hollandia777 id still say the clash were great too as well as the jam
@salvadory Actually I could never understand ppl who admire Clash! 1, probably, ought to be british to get some subtil edetails and hints of their lyrics. But.... The biggest difference b'tween Clash and Damned is the latter doesn't have ANY musically borin' song. Agree?
@psychodamned i love the damned but the clash matched them stride for stride- in the end its a toss up for me -! However this is one of my favorite damned songs atleast from this period
the best punk band still.
Dead right
the Jam the Damned and the Clash- the holy trinity britain 1977-1982- the pistols were great but were a one off- the damned still put on a great show !!!!!
@Kelly14UK Another punk Kelly ??? ( I'm a Kelly too ) : )
@psychodamned It annoyed me when Malcolm McLaren rated The Damned as #10 in the list of greatest punk bands. Couldn't believe it. But maybe it's because he managed the Pistols, so he was influenced by his past. The Sex Pistols taught me the guitar ( all those barres, root 5ths and nasty leads), but The Damned fukkin ROCKED man. :D
He's a twat anyway
@pnebuz I totally agree I'm in a band and alls you get is people who are into oasis. i hate oasis they are totally shite. Vanian , Brian James Rat cappers etc all were wonderful talented people. They deserve alot more credit than they get. Amongst thier peers too. The Clash and the Pistols wern't fit to lick the piss off The Damned 's boots !!!
Pipkin Hopkins . Totally agree, the damned were musicians. Their live shows were incendiary and always a great night out.
excellent
Really glad i found this
I wont compare it to anything current cos i cant be arsed. It worked for me then and it works for me now. They key changes in this track are so fuckin sharp and unexpected. Driving and dynamic from start to finish. Love it
Thanks
In '86 I saw a green vinyl of this. Was it 7" or 10"? Can't remember. Only had the one B side. Teenage Dream. I'm So Bored was missing.
