Damned, The - In Dulce Decorum Lyrics
Dear mother how I will write this line
When I know I'm counting time
I'm tired and I'm scared
I'm waiting and death's my friend
Oh the death and glory boys not for this
Dear beloved try to write to you
Through the senseless deaths of a million troops
I'm waiting my time is near
As my tears wash away my years
To say in God we trust not for this
Oh the death and glory boys not for this
The haunting flares where my friends bleed
I see the face of the enemy
Of a man or boy who is just like me
Now you're not there
All the tears we bled
Cut through like winters rain
Can't you feel the pain
And if I could ever sleep again
I know till the end of time I'd hear
Their screams of pain
Dulce dulce decorum
Dulce dulce decorum
Dulce
Dear mother I'll write to you

MARTIN CASTILLO, RICARDO TUBBS & JAMES "SONNY" CROCKETT BROUGHT ME HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Years ago I was reading some article about WW1 on some web page, a guy was posting about the poem this was based on and how he taught it at some University, I linked this video in a post after him, I forgot about it for a few days, then I saw a I had a comment on disqus, the guy I responded to had posted to me that he had never known about the song and was going to use it in his class around the poem. I hoped it would introduce some college kids to the damned...
I'AM COUNTING TIME AND I'AM SCARED , THE TIME IS NEAR, IT'S SWEET VICTORY TO GIVE YOUR LIFE FOR YOUR COUNTRY. THE MEANING OF ABOVE SONG.
IT'S SWEET VICTORY TO GIVE YOUR LIFE FOR YOUR COUNTRY
Only dumbasses give life for their country. Patriotisme = shitty value.
MIAMI VICE WALK ALONE EPISODE 4 SEASON 3 FOR ABOVE SONG, TUBBS VOLUNTEERS TO GO UNDER COVER IN BOLTON PRISON. BEST EPISODE ! ! !
Fucking killer.
DEPEND ON NO ONE WHEN YOU'RE IN STATE PRISON, YOU MUST WALK ALONE.
TUBBS MUST GO INTO A STATE PRISON AND HELP THE DEA TAKE DOWN CROOKED PRISON OFFICIALS , BEST OF MIAMI VICE ! ! !
WHEN YOU'RE IN STATE PRISON YOU MUST WALK ALONE, MIAMI VICE EPISODE WITH ABOVE SONG. WATCH IT AND LEARN FROM IT.
🌴 MIAMI VICE 🌴 😎 Great track. 👌
Reminds me of the stranglers
Watch out for the skin deep....
Back when there was real music with harmony melody and rhythm
Sad that it takes a show to get people to find great bands like The Damned, and not an open mind seeking new forms of expression. People used to have to dig to find good music, and develop personality in the quest. Now, any soulless TV zombie can find these bands easily due to the Internet, but it still takes a TV show to direct their closed TV minds!
Anyone here in 2019?

Dear beloved
I thought this was either Simple minds or Echo and the bunnymen.
thank god for miami vice , love this song more than you know, great band
this song is so great , i dont know where to start , it reaches into your soul . wow
Looks like 9 people got a jury of their own peers.
With out the Churchill into, this song is just another song...
Buy the album/CD to hear real music.
If Miami Vice brought you here, you dont know music..
Miami Vice....Tubbs infiltrated a crooked Jail running drugs posing as an inmate...Castillo, to the rescue.....
TheFallinOfficer971 man I’m telling you I know they say season 3 is when the show began to decline but this episode is a masterpiece and this song was perfect choice REALLY capturing the dog day despair of prison!!!!
The prison ... Lay down... Lay down ... freeze 😂👍🏻
As a kid I used to hear this on Friday night on Miami Vice and it would play in my brain for the next 5 days.
Seen the damned many times but managed to meet dave vanian on this tour. ..top guy
“Anything” and “In Dulce Decorum” are The Damned in classic post punk mode — as good as U2, Simple Minds, Echo and the Bunnymen
Spot on. You have very good taste and are very smart. I totally agree with every word you said here. Simple Minds Somebody Up There Likes You and New Gold Dream are the best for me. Cutter from Echo is also top notch. 👍And i cant forget Theme for Great Cities from Simple Minds. The best music came from these times.👍
Simple Mind's and Echo and the Bunnymen possibly ! But U2? C'mon! Bonehead and U2 ain't worthy to sweep the stage after A Damned gig!
Just because a band like Bonehead and his boys are mega - successful once in a blue moon and live on reputations of the past, counts for bo-diddly squat in my eyes! The Damned, and others like them, have stood the test of time and though they appeal to fewer people, they will always have a far loyal following.
3:12--best part of the song...('course it's set up by the rest of the song)
Where is the Churchill intro???
Yeah, it's not quite the same without it:
"if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour."
It does clash a little with the body of the song, which is a anti-war (I think?), in that it is inspired by Wilfred Owen's experience in the unbelievably tragic absurdity that was WWI--whereas Churchill is praising the British pilots who "saved" Britain from invasion in the Battle of Britain during WWII...
Also William Joyce "Germany calling Germany calling"
Epic Tune!!! Love it!!
miami vice eat shit
This hit from The Damned was heard on the Miami Vice episode, Walk-Alone, which aired on October 17, 1986. Miami Vice was one of my all-time favorite shows. It was the first to combine MTV with police action drama. I did not see this episode when it first aired as I was out at sea (US Navy).
Dave's vocals remind me of Robert Smith's in this song.
pity sensible wont do songs from when he wasnt in the band
Slightly silly of him.
Dayum, Miami Vice featured some of the best music of the 80s, and this song was probably top 3 of that glorious decade!
The Damned's finest hour.
Castillo badass !!
Eddie was good on that part!
Thought it was the Bunnymen.... real close to the same sound.
Or even Simple minds.
Majestic!!!
HEADCOUNT!
thank you miami vice now i know about this band
hit hit move move line up for roll count .damit give it a report lay down lay down lay down take him out
+Jj Hook Yeah, cuool huh? Castillo with those concentrated eyes and low controlled voice.
Far and away their best song IMHO. Thanks so much for posting. Long live Miami Vice!
One on many of their best songs...
I second it..Thumbs Up ..Long Live Miami Vice and Ray-Bans Wayfarers!
Not even close (still great though).
Si alguién pudiera hacerlo con subtitulado español le agradecería,temazo.-
Exelente tema!! si mal no recuerdo, en este capítulo no actuó don johnson...
what he said
Si actuó
good song.......but the instrumental version is much better sorry :(
FlavioGirl Have to disagree. Much prefer this one, but I'm partial to vocals
The Damned are an amazing band who`ve achieved only a tiny fraction of the commercial success that they`ve deserved over the years. Then again more success may have prevented them becoming the awesome live unit that they`ve become today!
Justin Cole well put.i just watched the documentary and tbere is definitely frustration expressed at the financial shortcomings but today they are so on top of their game.
Great song!
Interesting
DULCE ET DECORUM EST(1)
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares(2) we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest(3) began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots(4)
Of tired, outstripped(5) Five-Nines(6) that dropped behind.
Gas!(7) Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets(8) just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime(9) . . .
Dim, through the misty panes(10) and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering,(11) choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud(12)
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest(13)
To children ardent(14) for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.(15)
Wilfred Owen
Thought to have been written between 8 October 1917 and March, 1918
One of their best. Masterpiece.
Castillo was such a badass in the scene this music was used in (Miami Vice)
Primitive Spongebob it is indeed Sweet and Fitting :)
Great scene.
i just heard this on Miami Vice today :-)
he sure did... at least he got a jury of his own peers
Haha!! And here I was thinking I was the only one geeking out on old Miami Vice episodes... Just heard it last night. 2/22/2017.
Miami Vice is ageless my fellow Vice fan. Watch it the other night, best in that season. Great ending. Fishburne, I forgot he guest starred too.
I just Shazam'd this from Miami Vice today too! 4th April 2018.
🌴MIAMI VICE 🌴 AWESOME TV SHOW, WITH A GREAT SOUND 🔊 TRACK. 👌 👍 👏

Tubbs' jericurl was under a lot of stress in this scene.
mikedoesseo IM DEAD😂😂😂😂
I'm a bit jealous of this.
this LP contains some of their best ever songs IMHO , pity they don't do thwem live cos Capt Sensible wasn't in it then
Walk Alone ~ another great Miami Vice episode Good guest stars: Laurence Fishburne & Kevin Conroy
Like a ninja.
I still imagine Castillo moving like a cat around that crazy prison
the chord structure of this song is really weird, yet very memorable
Dedicated to Wilfried Qwen..!!
Este tema musical lo pasaban en la serie Division Miami (Miami Vice)
They sound just like U2.
Bahhhh!!

Too ahead of their time to be totally understood!
I just picked up a German copy of this LP, Never heard it before..Anyone interested?
Pretty cool...Thx
trop bon....!!!!
no like this today
the one i got from the Miami Vice 2 soundtrack tape's different to this one
I heard it once in Miami Vice and quickly tried to find out who was the performer :)
You gotta wonder how many will get your reference!
scabies is a drumming machine!!!!!
shit, I mean to say that it was played when Castillo breaks into the prison and shows his spider-like skills
while Tubbs displays his ninja ambush skills on Keller (thanks to an obvious jump cut after Castillo says ''Freeze!'')
No, it was on the 2nd soundtrack release by the TV series. it was played on a pretty cool car chase in the show
great song... greetings from yugoslavia
Me to mate, didn't appreciate them enough back in the day, now sound classic, what ever that means. Love em, an antidote to X Factor and all the shite out there nowadays me thinks. (Feeling the pain)
Love, John.

I LOVE the Damned. Seen them only 3 times. Should have been at least 30 times.
This album was somewhat crappy, but this is one of the keepers from it. It made it onto the second Miami Vice soundtrack.
no, it's the album's name
I have this on my miami vice II cassette and it's an extended version, which is exeptional.

Theres a miami vice soundtrack CD version of this song with the vocals removed. Great instrumental by itself, especially when driving at about 60 mph listening to it in the car.
