Whenever I am feeling depressed about life this song never fails to cheer me up!

This song reminds me a bit of "Statues" by O.M.D. (same mood, same darkness, same everything).

Used to listen to this song in my teens in the middle of the night with all lights out. It's like a cradle to the soul where sorrow and difficult emotion can rest. In such a way. That it can just be. No need to be explained. Floating aimlessly.

it means all cats are grey in the dark. Do you have this saying in English? I'm assuming this is where it comes from.

Google seems to think it's a Benjamin Franklin quote, advising a young man to prefer sex with older women. (And just as some yobs say no woman is ugly after 2AM, so, when the lights are out there's no grey hair - or no more than on the head of one woman than on that of any other woman.)

First time I ever heard of it, but I've lived most of my life under a stone, so that's what one would expect. Sounds like sound advice?

@sickofthewest in Swedish we use this expression in a situation where the choices on offer all seem much the same and rather bland. So in the context of the song it seems to make sense to me. I feel like this song is about depression and how everything seems uninviting and our options seem unexciting and incapable of bringing hope. Thats my feeling here.

@Casper Jönsson , yes, I think the Swedish version (and perhaps an English usage of that encountered by The Cure) would be what's intended here.

When this Album was released we had a group of 4-5 schoolfriends who would retreat to a dark room and listen to this for hours. Sarah Morgan where are you and the gang? Still one of my all time favourites.

J'ai magnifiquement vibré, à l'époque, adolescent sensible, sur leur trilogie. Je ne renie rien de cela même si, aujourd'hui, ça le fait un peu moins. Pour moi, après "Pornography", le groupe n'existe plus. Plus du tout. Je me suis toujours refusé à écouter quoi que ce soit d'eux (sauf accidentellement) qui soit postérieur au dernier morceau de la trilogie. J'ai considéré, dès l'époque, que ça marquait un voyage abouti et sans retour. Je suis, pour ce groupe, un puriste radical.

I remember listening to this when going from Venice to Geneva by car in autumn. The rain, the gray, the green and a lost love. Very sad but emotionally beautiful.
