this cover though, which is obviously the cross section of a tree but somehow looks like an old photograph of one's view while driving on a road towards a smoking, darkness radiating object. Note the smoke coming off the center of the cross section towards the upper right hand side and the forests going from left to right. It sure had an effect on me.

Sounds like you're a Post-Metal kinda guy. I'd suggest checking out Alcest, Isis, Mouth of the Architect, Neurosis, Numenorean, The Ocean, Palms, and Pelican if you haven't already.

I agree about Isis, it is a "dead band" now, but they always have been some kind of special, like COL. Try Panopticon and Absence of Truth / Wavering Radiant. Pelican is a good recomm too i guess.

@Vay Vayre the matter is not only in Julie. This band used to be great from their very first album, and this one is just a pale copy of their years 2000s works. Even considering Mariner as an exceptional album.

Now I see why they have to make attacks on As I lay Dying. They can't dish it out.

When I listen to Cult, it feels like home. Like a cat purring, it's soothing. Saw them twice and it's something you have to do in your life. Their show at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris was amazing!

All the album is mind blowing but "A Dawn to Fear" gives me thrills every time I listen to it. Just beautiful.

This recording reminded me of ISIS.Not my piece of cake but I lked it.

Inland Rain is wonderful song. One of the favorites on this album. Guitar riff from 1:01:50 reminded me Katatonia. :)

No way! Does not even compare! Cult of Luna has great instrumentation but the vox are really boring! In my view...

They both play in B tuning (drop B for CoL, B standard for AA), so many minor-scale melodies may sound similar due to the sounds in them being the same.

Simply incredible, Cult of Luna never disappoint

Definitely their best since salvation and somewhere along the highway. I think to truly understand how great these guys are is to see them live. I saw them 6 years ago and no one has topped them since. They have an amazing light show and they create an atmosphere like no other band you’ll ever see live.

Amazing album, as Johannes said, we can clearly feel that those riffs came straight out of his heart, the result is more natural, more organic, previous album seems to be more "organized and calculated" (not in a bad way). If you care about details you can ear every single signature that has make COL's sound during all these years.
I fucking love the drums on this record, a perfect balance between natural/groovy playing and cold/hypnotik parts ! <3
Can't wait to see them live :D :D :D

Better than I could have ever hoped for! It's crazy how much hype Tool are getting for their damp squib of a new album (and I'm a fan!) when this masterful work seemingly appears to be going under the radar. Unfair!

Tool is much more "popular music". Lots of my friends who are die-hard fans of Tool havent ever heard about this unique band, Cult of Luna. I showed them, now they really like them.

I think Tool also made a very good album...and i think those so much years to wait made that hype big enough.
I'm just happy that we have so much good music in 2019!
