Crowell, Rodney - Closer To Heaven Lyrics

I don't like hommus, I hate long lines
Nosey neighbors and venetian blinds
Chirping news anchors alter my mood
I'm offended by buzz-words like "awesome" and "dude"

I look like a train wreck, I feel like a blob
Till you get to know me, you may think I'm a snob
But I'm closer to heaven than I've ever been

I don't eat sushi, I don't smoke grass
I don't wear pyjamas, I don't drive fast
I hate idle gossip and tassled shoes
Slick politicians, they give me the blues

I don't ride in Limos, I can't play golf
I don't own a rifle that will blow your head off
But I'm closer to heaven than I've ever been

I'm riding that way from cradle to grave
I'm learning to feel my hands on the wheel

I love my friends, I love my wife
Four little babies are the light of my life
I love Sissy Spacek, I love Guy Clark
All the biscuits and gravy I can eat with a fork

I don't wanna be famous, who gives a damn?
I just wanna be happy where ever I am
And I'm closer to heaven than I've ever been
I'm closer to heaven than I've ever been

Closer to heaven
Closer to heaven

Another deep song of Rodney' s feelings and honesty. He puts his heart into his songs and music and that's what makes him such a successful and talented musician. He has a way with words and uses them well, he certainly doesn't beat around the bush, when he's trying to get his point across. Thank you Rodney not just for putting your all, into your fine music, but for sharing such a gifted talent that you have.

    Such A Fun Song

  13. D.... M....

He is my heart and my mirror. He defines my very sad childhood, my own private rebelliousness and ways. Chinaberry Sidewalks was mine in so much; Closer to Heaven was his redeeming grace. I wish that for me, I wish more knew his grace, and brilliance and I'm so glad I saw him, in S. Rosa, Calif for the center of the blind, I was just 5' away and it was a non boozy daytime haystack sittin' kinda gig. I loved it. Summer time. I had not seen Rodney since SF days, of which I loved leavin' for a simple life, and to see him, read his book, come before his tour w/ Emmy, bc I could afford it then was sheer joy and being OUTSIDE too. And the fans were spectacular for him. Adorable wonderful people. I wore my best denim with my long long blonde pony tailed hair at the time. XXO

This guy has a way with words like very few others.  From Telephone Road to this.  Amazing.

  15. B.... N....

    rodneys signing seems effortless

  16. d.... ....

The merit of a song depends upon the "stripdown " thereby the fewer instruments needed to express the lyrics & melody reveal the worth & character of the message... Rodney is a master at this thus just the singer & instrument.

  17. B.... ....

I love Rodney's music any way it comes... this tune is wonderful.

  18. R.... ....

    Magical.

  19. H.... S....

I won't go see Rodney play live unless it's full band electric. He has way too much energy and youth left in him to be confined to boring acoustic storytelling, which gets very sleepy.

    H.... S....

As I get older, I know myself better, I understand life more, I love tenderly and I feel more comfortable in my life.  That is what this song means to me.  It may be different for you.  And yes, Rodney in a full electric band is pure heaven.

  20. R.... N....

One of the songwriting geniuses of the twentieth (and twenty-first) centuries.

  21. m.... ....

Me too Rodney, really feeling the lyrics! A million stars from the heavens above for this song...♥

  22. s.... ....

Rodney puts his heart and soul in every song he writes. one of our best singer-songwriters.

  23. m.... ....

    Pure bliss...what a song...♥

Such a beautiful songwriter. I am reading his memoir now. This man is a damn good writer in any format. His memoir is rich, textured, and so well written. It could not have been ghost written; it has voice--the same, beautiful voice you hear in Rodney Crowell's music. It's all his. I recommend reading. Whether you consider yourself a Rodney Crowell fan or not, it's just plain good literature. Thank you, Rodney Crowell, for the words you've give us in song and print.

  27. j.... ....

Rodney is looking old , and I know I am getting old . I saw him a few years back at the Majestic in Detroit. After the show my girl and I were sitting in the lounge and Rodney was walking by the window on his way to his bus. He was nice enough to wave goodbye.

  28. w.... ....
