Cream - Spoonful Lyrics

Could fill spoons full of diamonds,
Could fill spoons full of gold.
Just a little spoon of your precious love
Will satisfy my soul.

Men lies about it.
Some of them cries about it.
Some of them dies about it.
Everything's a-fightin' about the spoonfull.
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.

Could fill spoons full of coffee,
Could fill spoons full of tea.
Just a little spoon of your precious love;
Is that enough for me?

Men lies about it.
Some of them cries about it.
Some of them dies about it.
Everything's a-fightin' about the spoonfull.
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.

Could fill spoons full of water,
Save them from the desert sands.
But a little spoon of your forty-five
Saved you from another man.

Men lies.
Some of them cries about it.
Some of them dies.
Everything's a-fightin' about it.
Everything's a-cryin' about it.
Everything's a-diein' about it.
Everything's a-cryin' about it.
Everything's a-liein' about it.

Little old, little old spoonfull.
Die'n about it
Cryin about it
That spoon, that spoon
Little old, little old spoonfull

That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.
That spoon, that spoon, that spoonfull.
Everything's a-diein' about it.

I don't think Eric ever sounded as good without Jack and ginger, but he also didn't played with anybody that were as good as they were

    e.... A....

Agree they were the real deal and did all they could in such a short space if time together but it's about quality not quantity that's why we're all still chilling to these sounds and not stones

You have to put this band (and this song) in context. At that time, AM radio was the only game in town, and it was playing music like Sweet Pea, See You in September, Hanky Panky, all catchy tunes, but that was the average production level of the time. Spoonful was not AM radio fare, and FM for Rock was still a few years away, which is when I finally heard it around four years later, and it was still current for that time, I thought it had just come out, while the AM radio fare from 1966 was badly dated, especially in their sound and production quality, when music instruments, amps, gear, and studios were advancing at blinding speed - one year could make a lot of difference, two years and it was obvious... rock was maturing, too, gradually playing to older audiences (which rendered AM radio fare 'bubblegum music', dismissed as kiddy fare, which no copycat studio would touch any longer... they copied this instead.

Maybe Howlin Wolf did do it better! But it's like comparing a Ford Model T to a Ford T- Bird. Both great cars in their day, but materials, techniques and technology move on.
Yo'all gotta remember that the covers these guys did of their "blues heroes" were just that!; Honouring their heroes & musical idols and paying homage to them and their classic songs. They were trying to add to them, not take away from them.

These "English" boys [ok; British, if you want me to be pc] recognised the brilliance of the original "artists" and the fact that the circumstances of these, mostly Southern US black musicians was what created these great songs in the first place. And were worthy of all the world hearing them.
I really don't give a damn what colour, race or creed the artist is. If it's great music and good lyrics, that does it for me. Whoever did it first has always got bragging rights in my book. But that doesn't diminish the later chapters that someone else writes.
Get over yourselves as far as "my grandaddy was better'n yours" goes. In today's world it doesn't mean "fuck". We all know there's no race better than any other. If it were the case, there would only be one tribe of inbreeds on the planet.

The bridge between 50s blues and heavy metal, Black Sabbath's first album sounds a lot like that, heavy riffs, pounding drums, acid feel, and even Ozzy Osbourne used to sing much like Jack Bruce back then! It really strikes when you think this was recorded in 1966!

  32. M.... S....

Eu me lembro de quando tinha 10 anos de idade colocava o vinil é chorava kkk ! É de arrebentar esse vinil !🤩

  33. R.... D....

Who else thinks this album is way better than Disraeli Gears?

    R.... D....

    uh they are both great

    R.... D....

They definitely shifted gears on Disraeli ,even though I thought it was a bit rushed .In fairness, they were just breaking worldwide with heavy touring in support of the new album.

A Best of Cream 8-track cassette was one of about 7 my dad owned when I was about 5-6 years old in 1972 (Syracuse NY).   I would play the 8-track listen to the songs, including Spoonful, and now each note is forever ingrained in my brain.   I can not even imagine my life as it is without having known about Cream's music.   Such a bad-ass band - quintessential early 70's feel.

    T.... ....

    Clive Bindley
    1)read the whole comment.
    2) they are not a early 70s band
    3) Obviously you weren’t at the party!

    T.... ....

@John Nada I read it, understood it and replied accordingly. If you think I was saying Cream were an early 70's band you clearly have poor comprehension skills.
Maybe you should study the comments, carefully.

    T.... ....

Clive Bindley at exactly what point did I deny that his dad could have possibly owned the original albums . I clearly stated that he was probably not following a fad ( because Cream had been disbanded for 4 years ) , I also stated that his Dad probably had good taste in Rock if he was listening to Cream in 72 . BTW the best of Album was originally released in 68 so it’s very possible that he bought it in the 60s . My 2 points were
    1) they were not a early 70s band they were definitely a 60s band
    2) By owned that album his Dad more than likely had good taste in Rock
    Study that

    T.... ....

@John Nada So once again I'll state...I didn't say they were an early 70's band. Nobody has actually said that, so why you keep repeating is beyond me. I agree his Dad had good taste, so does he if he still listens to it.
Best of Cream is a compilation album of material recorded from 1966 to 1968 by the rock band Cream, and released shortly after their disbanding. The album was originally released by Cream's U.S. label Atco (Atlantic) Records (catalog no. SD 33-291), and was available on that label during the years 1969–72.
So NOT 1968 as you stated.

    T.... ....

Clive Bindley OP: “bad ass band ....early seventies feel “ read the two posts above my original post . It is not all about you, the first 3 replies all respond that Cream was a 60s band , everyone gets it but you. I repeat it’s not about you ( work on those comprehension skills you claim you have)
P.S. you are obviously a pseudo intellectual who likes to go around starting arguments where there are none . I have better things to do then be drawn into your messed up world . Goodbye

This is a good take on Spoonful. Howlin Wolf's is just as good but they have different takes on the song. Reminds me of Lost Woman from the Yardbirds. James Gang did their own take on that song and it was just as good but it took a slightly different approach.

    O.... K....

Sumlin was good on the guitar...but not in the same league as Clapton.

  42. L.... ....

I'm 70, an old redneck Texas cowboy. I first heard Cream, on their "Fresh Cream" album, in 1966. As an avid blues fan, I already knew Eric Clapton's guitar prowess from his stints with "The Yardbirds," and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers (one of greatest blues albums EVER!). I also knew Ginger Baker was an accomplished jazz drummer and that Jack Bruce was one of the all time great bassists. When I put the "Fresh Cream" on my 33 rpm turn table, lowered the stylus, I was totally stunned, awed. Damn, this is SO Powerful! Holy Shit! Now, 52 years later, and countless playing, this album STILL blows me away. Cream remains a legendary band, perhaps the greatest of all time. At least to me, Cream is still the Cream of the Crop. Yeah verily.

    L.... ....

Jeeesh , I feel like a kid here at 65 , growing up in L A surrounded by older “kids” listening to early Cream , Hendrix, zeppelin CCR etc. I may be right or wrong but that was a Golden age of Rock and Roll . Don’t forget the “ long versions “ they played on early FM .
P.S. I remember one time me and my brother were headed out the door to go to the beach again ( hey it was summer) and the old man was yelling at us that we need to do something ( he meant work instead of fun) and we got in the car put Cream in the 4 track and what came blasting back at him through the speakers? All right All right All right All right ( cat’s squirrel off of fresh cream ) perfect timing, and we were off .

DRock6906 why is there always one person to bring race into something when it has nothing to do with it. I much prefer this version, not because they are white and I like white people more than black people but because I prefer the music in this version. Fuck off with playing the race card all the time you moron
