Cream - Deserted Cities Of The Heart Lyrics

Upon this street where time has died.
The golden treat you never tried.
In times of old, in days gone by.
If I could catch your dancing eye.

It was on the way,
On the road to dreams, yeah.
Now my heart's drowned in no love streams, yeah.

The street is cold, its trees are gone.
The story's told the dark has won.
Once we set sail to catch a star.
We had to fail, it was too far.

It was on the way,
On the road to dreams, yeah.
Now my heart's drowned in no love streams, yeah.

I felt the wind shout like a drum.
You said, "My friend, love's end has come."
It couldn't last, had to stop.
You drained it all to the last drop.

It was on the way,
On the road to dreams, yeah.
Now my heart's drowned in no love streams, yeah.

Now my heart's drowned in no love streams, yeah.

On this dark street the sun is black.
The winter life is coming back.
On this dark street it's cold inside.
There's no retreat from time that's died.

It was on the way,
On the road to dreams.
Now my heart's drowned in no love streams, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Now my heart's drowned in no love streams, yeah.
Now my heart's drowned in no love.

  8. S.... C....

Everything about this is utter fucking greatness.

  9. D.... B....

The viola's kick ass in this song , then Clapton comes in and just nails it in the middle, which leads back to the viola's !

  10. d.... d....

Never before or since has any band produced such iconic music.
RIP Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce, you will not be forgotten.

  11. K.... N....

This is definitely my favorite Cream song.

  12. D.... ....

When, You take Jack's influence here in Musicality .This is where I believe ole Eric started waning . Jack, was miles ahead of Him in ways. There, is not only Strings ,mello- cello , Piano Acoustic guitar ,His Bass and Voice . This is a PRODUCER OF MUSIC .

  13. T.... ....

    Psychedelic and Beatle-ish. So superb!

  14. A.... R....

Ohne, dass der Song das thematisieren würde und abgesehen auch von der offen ersichtlichen musikalischen Präsenz der Urbevölkerung -- ist er empirisches Material, das den Sachverhalt dokumentiert, that the US is haunted by the murdered ones.
And -- very, very American.

  15. A.... R....

That drums and cello section is killer! Gets me every time 😎

  16. S.... E....

  28. A.... S....

    RIP Ginger Baker

  36. g.... ....

Rest In Peace, Ginger. You nut.

  37. R.... F....

This is my favourite song by this wonderful trio. Awesome drumming by Mr Baker, which has passed away today. Hope you and Jack are now at peace with each other.

  38. J.... K....

    R.I.P. Ginger Baker

  39. J.... B....

this is a bad ass freakin tune....

  40. O.... ....

The solo is about the only redeeming feature. And what is up with the mix? Horrible.

  41. R.... C....

    Absolutely my fav song ever!!!!

  42. b.... n....

the guitar solo sounds unnatural, like it was sped up technichally

    J.... P....

@Deroga Tree Yeah lol Jack Black will never be as good as the holy trinity, bruce, baker and clapton

  48. J.... Y....

the sun is black...the streets are cold

  55. R.... R....

    SUBLIME

  56. t.... m....

    TURN IT UP LOUD!!!!

  57. S.... S....

got to love jack's vocal vibrato here

  58. J.... D....

Lived in Germany for a while and saw Jack Bruce playing in a small club he was EXCELLENT.

  59. B.... ....

    Absolute fire

  60. M.... S....

    Essa musica é muito legal e sincera!😊

  61. A.... W....

Thats actually one of the best solos I've heard. Love that vintage tone.

    A.... W....

What tone???????????????????? There's enough treble on it to loosen fillings! You want 'tone'? Check out 'Sitting On Top Of The World' from the Grande Ballroom bootleg. Now That's Tone!

  62. B.... ....

This is what the boys had inside their skulls -- wheels of fire...… yeah!!!!!!

    B.... ....

Mostly it resided in Jack's skull!

  63. J.... R....

I always claimed Those Were The Days was my favorite... but this is superb also.

  64. D.... V....

The Cream! !!!!! There is No Words for Them!!!!

  65. P.... H....

The greatest song title of all time!

  66. B.... ....

The live version of this song on "Live Cream II" is even more amazing than this great version!

  67. E.... M....

It’s a shame that I only knew them from good fellas...there are much better songs...much better than sunshine of your love. What a perfect and lovely band.

  68. D.... W....

Learned to play this from a Cream songbook. It works really well as just acoustic. Obviously this is tons better but it's a great wee solo song.

  69. G.... G....

The Beatles are the GOAT ... Yeah right! The Beatles sound like marching band music compared to this.

  70. O.... ....

You can sense they are reaching for something here, with the keyboards and strings and such. Cream just didn't have time to develop. Their live stuff is fantastic (no matter what those shits at Rolling Stone say) but their studio material just wasn't at the same level.

  71. O.... A....

    Cream's masterpiece !!

  72. M.... B....

Hey, give Cream some 👂it will heal .

  73. F.... O....

Real music for real music lovers

  74. S.... S....

This band was such a staple of my wild days of youth. It's good to feel their music again after all these years.

  75. z.... n....

    💗😎fuck yeh 🚨soundtrack of my youth !!!!!! 🐂💨💨

  76. o.... t....

the who acid queen reminds this song

  77. S.... K....

The bridge to this song is amazing. Our guitar teacher in junior high would play Cream, The Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers on the class stereo continuously and that was great.

    S.... K....

    Jack bruce.Réquiem un pace.Drear Master

  78. 7.... ....

Double album, half in the studio, half live and one of the all time best albums.

  79. R.... B....

Another classic written by Jack and Pete Brown

  80. C.... S....

Favorite song from their awesome follow up to Disraeli Gears. But yea I never get tired of ”White room”.
Could have been even more huge if this album was cut down to one platter. Still a Psych favorite of mine.

    C.... S....

Since WOF became the first double album in history of popular music to go platinum,I don't know if that could be possible. The live side proved that they were performance beasts -true to the hype.

  81. t.... ....

A lesser-known cut, from my second-favorite LP, by my own personal Greatest Rock Band of All Time.
(I exclude the Beatles from that assertion, of course, because they were sui generis.)
The melody/harmony relationship of this tune, while triadic (this is proto-metal, after all) follow the rules of Jazz harmony; the meter-changes are executed flawlessly in a way that no other band at that time could achieve (thank you, Ginger); Clapton plays his solo in an unexpected "raga" style, and quite successfully; and these lyrics are written by Pete Brown, "the sanest of all mad men" (Jack Bruce's assessment of his long-time collaborator, I believe):

"Upon this street where time has died
The golden treat you never tried
In times of old, in days gone by
If I could catch your dancing eye

    It was on the way
On the road to dreams, yeah
Now my heart's drowned in no love streams, yeah

The street is cold, its trees are gone
The story's told the dark has won
Once we set sail to catch a star
We had to fail, it was too far

    It was on the way
On the road to dreams, yeah
Now my heart's drowned in no love streams

I felt the wind shout like a drum
You said, "My friend, love's end has come"
It couldn't last, had to stop
You drained it all to the last drop

    It was on the way
On the road to dreams, yeah
Now my heart's drowned in no love streams
Now my heart's drowned in no love streams, yeah"

Drowning in the absence of something...
    This is Effing Brilliant.

  82. M.... ....

    Som foda !!!!
    Ave Baker !!!!

  83. M.... B....

Incredible song. The forerunner of many a progrock epic.

    M.... B....

Wash your fingers out with soap.

  84. S.... K....

Felix Pappalardi who produced Cream was a great asset. He added strings...viola and cello...to many of their tracks. Gone too soon.

    S.... K....

And his wife was one wild motherfucker, but a danger.

    S.... K....

Ertegun was wise /savy enough to draft Pappalardi ,who hit it off musically with Jack in particular .And was ,along with master engineer Tom Dowd ,ready to give Cream focus to attain the level of maturity we would all hear later on WOF

  88. E.... W....

Great song, I especially love the cello/drum part. Very smooth.

    E.... W....

    You are an awesome woman.

  89. R.... G....

    Cream's best song, IMHO.

  90. S.... R....

'68 lives again every time I hear this..head shops all down Hollywood blvd with incense wafting out and blacklight posters hanging in view while the hari krishna freaks twirling around with their scary ass pseudo-friendliness staring you down and fringe leather bearded hippees selling "L.A.free press" papers and incense sticks..trippy times seared into the brain during The War and the Establishment lies...

  91. A.... P....

one of the first songs with a galloping rhythm.

  92. A.... T....

The only thing that spoils it for me is the hideous 'double speed effect on the guitar solo! It's far too thin a sound!

  93. A.... G....

That solo got my attention when I first heard it in '68. Sped-up tape magic!

    A.... G....

    They admitted that.

    A.... G....

Did they? I never heard anything about it, but it was obvious to my ear the first time I heard it. I was myself experimenting with tape speed at the time, so I was familiar with the sound.

    A.... G....

Since they had toured all over the west coast -Felix must have liked /admired Quicksilver's John Cippolina's distinctive style enough to add a little flavor when it came time for post production of WOF.

  94. d.... b....

Next to Van Morrison stands Mighty Jack Bruce vocally. God bless Mr Bruce, loved him my whole life long. I was 15 in 1967

    d.... b....

Oh I think Jack was a better vocalist, then there's his out and out musical talent, writing, singing and playing all in a wide variety of musical styles! I like Van Morrison but he's no Jack Bruce!

  95. a.... ....

Could listen to Baker play all day. Pure genius.

  96. S.... D....

Just brings back such great memories! I almost feel sorry for those who didn't live the 60's as I did. I said "almost". The music that came from that decade is timeless.

  97. D.... W....

    More cow bell.

  98. O.... ....

Really should have left that piano bit out of the mix.

  99. D.... S....

Surging into forfeited reason of that-then rush to be in the pulse of the again-Now. Whambamajam. Many thanks for the post, sinkoman. DMSwanson
