Costello, Elvis - St. Stephen's Day Murders Lyrics

I knew of two sisters whose name it was Christmas
And one was named Dawn of course, the other one was named Eve
I wonder if they grew up hating the season
Of the good will that lasts till the Feast of St. Stephen

For that is the time to eat, drink and be merry
'Til the beer is all spilled and the whiskey is flowed
And the whole family tree you neglected to bury
Are feeding their faces until they explode

[Chorus:]
There'll be laughter and tears over Tia Marias
Mixed up with that drink made from girders
And it's all we've got left as you draw your last breath
And it's nice for the kids as you've finally got rid of them
In the St Stephen's Day Murders

Uncle is garglin' a heart-breaking air
While the babe in his arms pulls out all that remains of his hair
And we're not drunk enough yet to dare criticize
The great big kipper tie he's about to baptize

His gin-flavoured whispers and kisses of sherry
His best crimble shirt flung out over the shop
While the lights from the Christmas tree blow up the telly
His face closes in like an old cold pork chop

[Alternate Chorus:]
And the carcass of the beast left over from the feast
May still be found haunting the kitchen
And there's life in it yet we may live to regret
When the ones that we poisoned stop twitchin'

[Regular Chorus Repeat]

no one added the lyrics yet so here you go:

I knew of two sisters whose name it was Christmas,
And one was named Dawn of course, the other one was named Eve.
I wonder if they grew up hating the season,
The good will that lasts til the Feast of St. Stephen
For that is the time to eat, drink, and be merry,
Til the beer is all spilled and the whiskey has flowed.
And the whole family tree you neglected to bury,
Are feeding their faces until they explode.
There'll be laughter and tears over Tia Marias,
Mixed up with that drink made from girders.
Cause it's all we've got left as they draw their last breath,
Ah, it's nice for the kids, as you finally get rid of them,
In the St Stephen's Day Murders.
Uncle is garglin' a heart-breaking air,
While the babe in his arms pulls out all that remains of his hair.
And we're not drunk enough yet to dare criticize,
The great big kipper tie he's about to baptize.
With his gin-flavored whiskers and kisses of sherry,
His best Chrimbo shirt slung out over the shop.
While the lights from the Christmas tree blow up the telly,
His face closes in like an old cold pork chop.
And the carcass of the beast left over from the feast,
May still be found haunting the kitchen.
And there's life in it yet, we may live to regret,
When the ones that we poisoned stop twitchin'.
There'll be laughter and tears over Tia Marias,
Mixed up with that drink made from girders.
Cause it's all we've got left as they draw their last breath,
Ah, it's nice for the kids, as you finally get rid of them,
In the St Stephen's Day Murders.

Leave it to God's Irish. Irish monks preserved sacred writings in 9th Century. The Irish segue Easter into Christmas. Celtic hymnody keeps Christmas ALIVE all the year. Nothing dies.

  3. W.... ....

Actually wtf, where did these lyrics come from?

    W.... ....

    Elvis Costello wrote them

  4. M.... ....

    I love this album . . .

  5. D.... D....

I played the organ for this CD. It was recorded in Belfast Cathedral.

    D.... D....

That’s awesome, I’m from sacramento. I grew up driving up to the redwoods listening to The Bells of Dublin.

    D.... D....

    Care to share any stories?

    D.... D....

@Severian sadly mr. drinkell passed away this year.

  6. F.... W....

i am a Cheiftan music fan.
maybe because my ancestors go back to Scotish Irish.

  7. k.... ....

    May the Chieftains live forever!

  8. E.... M....

I wish I was in Ireland for St. Stephen's Day, "Happy Boxing Day", everyone!

  9. S.... I....

Have always liked this cheeky song...complete with its veiled Irn-Bru reference, the [Scottish soft] drink "made from girders". ;) Apparently it's made itself known in Ireland, too.

    S.... I....

Maybe I'm wrong, but my mom had this on cassette tape for years, and I always thought the song said _"train_ made from girders", not "drink"... 'Course, I always thought the phrase before it was "there'll be laughter and tears, _or the tedium of years,"_ too...

  10. R.... L....
