Costello, Elvis - God's Comic Lyrics
I wish you'd known me when I was alive, I was
a funny feller
The crowd would hoot and holler for more
I wore a drunk's red nose for applause
Oh yes I was a comical priest
fleece"
Drooling the drink and the lipstick and
greasepaint
Down the cardboard front of my dirty dog-collar
[Chorus:]
Now I'm dead, now I'm dead, now I'm dead,
now I'm dead, now I'm dead
And I'm going on to meet my reward
I was scared, I was scared, I was scared, I was
He might of never heard God's Comic
So there he was on a water-bed
Drinking a cola of a mystery brand
Reading an airport novelette, listening to
Andrew Lloyd-Webber's "Requiem"
He said, before it had really begun, "I prefer
the one about my son"
"I've been wading through all this unbelievable
junk and wondering if I should have given
the world to the monkeys"
[Chorus]
I'm going to take a little trip down Paradise's
endless shores
They say that travel broadens the mind, till you
can't get your head out of doors
I'm sitting here on the top of the world
I hang around in the longest night
Until each beast has gone bed and then I say
"God bless" and turn out the light
While you lie in the dark, afraid to breathe and
you beg and you promise
And you bargain and you plead
Sometimes you confuse me with Santa Claus
It's the big white beard I suppose
I'm going up to the pole, where you folks die of cold
I might be gone for a while if you need me
Now I'm dead, now I'm dead, now I'm dead,
now I'm dead, now I'm dead and you're all
going on to meet your reward
Are you scared? Are you scared? Are you scared?
Are you scared?
You might have never heard, but God's comic

Costello, Elvis God's Comic Comments
Wow -- great job! I'm trying to get my daughter into EC, and this was a great way to do it!
I've always loved this track. Simply Brilliant.
Thank you 🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Well done! Would have been nice to also see Charley Chase and Gus Leonard.
I've watched this video several times over the years. As brilliantly haunting each time as the first, and the perfect accompaniment to a great song. Thanks 😊
Nice job. Good tribute to the silent greats.
Blur it´s so This
I think you outdid Elvis Costello on this one.
Don't know if anyone else here knows "Boomtown Rats" - but there is a post with another very good "made-up" video for the song: I Never Loved Eva Braun -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuGgEcE3sIQ
this is amazing - very well put-together -
the video the song deserved - hats off
The song and video is absolutely fantastic. Excellent work. Cheers!
Love this trackElvis Costello =genius
This song and this video really touch me.
A very nice song, nice melody, harmonies, bassline... all. And the video fits like a glove. Congrats.
And thanks, many thanks to God's comic.
Wonderful video. Thanks a lot.
this should be the official video - real talent
Pure class.
If it weren't so funny it'd be tragic, am I right? Or is it like what Burroughs said when asked if he believed in life after death: "What makes you think you're not dead now?"
Fatty Arbuckle is throwing a party after the shoe.
Fantastic job!
Really great job :)
How come the Three Stooges are not in the video??
These are all comics who started in silent films. The Stooges came later.
Really well done!!
This is fantastic! Thank you for putting it together!
Elvis tonight Saenger Theater New Orleans sweet

Great video that plays excellently with the song, brilliant idea
Wow! Brilliant and beautifully done. Thank you!
This song truly describes the tradgedy of certain death
Mama Cass, 1941-1974. Ham sandwich.
Ron Inbar she had a heart attack she didn’t die from choking on a ham sandwich
What a great video! Well done.
Happy Birthday Elvis!
a dark and beautiful song
beautiful, the live at Berkley version is something else
luvs...all...
Great sond and a very lovely made video. Thanks a lot!
One of the best finds I've come across on YT. Perfect approach - "Life's a laugh and death's a joke....Just remember the last laugh is on you."
btw - who is the one doing the backflips on 2:45?
This is wonderful!
You deserve an oscar, or an elvis, for this. Brilliant!
thanks for saying that for me too!
Maybe the best video I've ever seen. It is perfectly ,matched to the song, both generally and action by action. The addition of cause of death definately adds something, it's more
humanizing and more godly; Amazng work.
brilliant.... love it !!
This is the first Costello song ive ever heard..no lie..I'm fuckin hooked....this is a amazing song
You bring a real literate quality to the video, really showing off EC's clever wordplay !
I teach music and a teenage student brought this song in to learn on her Ukulele and we have made an arrangement of this song. I think it's a great piece of song writing. Very different from a lot of the Costello I was introduced to when I was younger.
You are so awesome !
Wow! How creative!
Fair play man!
Masterful. You clearly put a helluva lot of work into the video. Good lord. Thank you for a generous gift to all of us in youtube land!
maybe " the best video ''
Brilliant, you've done an amazing job on this.Top work, A great song also.
@BookerBird66 Thanks mate. It made me find the 'Backstage'-movie. Great vid btw...
who is the first actor with the funny dance moves?
This track always makes me cry, brilliant work by the genius that is Elvis Costello, saw him live in 1980, one word AWESOME
Exceptional. I haven't heard this song for years and the accompanying video is quite moving.
Outstanding!
Just stupendous. The perfect visual for this most perfect of tunes. Great job!
