Costello, Elvis - Clubland Lyrics

With a handful of backhanders and a bevy of beauty
You're going off limits
Going off duty
Going off the rails
Going off with booty
They tell tales of fiction found on all the criminal types
Lead to a higher ranking man or a face with thin red stripes

[Chorus:]
The boys next door
The mums and dads
New weds and nearly-deads
Have you ever been had in Clubland?

There's a piece in someone's pocket to do the dirty work
You've come to shoot the pony
They've come to do the jerk
They leave him half way to paradise
They leave you half way to bliss
The ladies' invitation never seemed like this

[Chorus]

The long arm of the law slides up the outskirts of town
Meanwhile in Clubland they are ready to pull them down
Hey

The right to work is traded in for the right to refuse admission
Don't pass out now, there's no refund
(when) Did you find out what you were missing
The crowd is taking forty winks minus ten percent
You barely get required sleep to go lingering with contemptment
Thursday to Saturday
Money's gone already
Some things come in common these days
Your hands and work aren't steady

[Chorus]

"Thursday to Saturday/Money's gone already...." The story of my life in the 80s.

  2. L.... ....

Where's the 4K version of this video?

  3. E.... R....

Dude how come this looks worse than my VHS transfer? Made with AMATEUR hardware?

  4. S.... C....

This is why Elvis is King~!

  5. r.... g....

Highly dangerous to pick a fave from the many songs of EC, but this might just be mine.

  6. D.... k....

Sounds like " whisper 2 a scream" , & another Elvis minor coalesced in2 one big Elvy major.

  7. S.... L....

This one of the first videos I remember watching on MTV when it first premiered.

  8. G.... R....

Incredible Elvis Costello tune. Amazing melodic, orchestrated song with these almost big band and jazz elements mixed in.

  9. k.... ....

VEVO are fucking tossers, their sound is always so poor.

  10. D.... M....

    Trust my fav Elvis album

  11. j.... k....

steve nieve one creative classically trained piano player, he is an orchestra unto himself. example the tune shot with his own gun

I think by Trust the songs aren't really there, though Elvis' lyrical denseness and melodic 'adventures' make it seem as though there's something 'sophisticated' and 'innovative' going on - when you're a talented band like the Attractions you can innovate the hell out of any obtuse tossed-off ditty and it's still an empty nothing song. As always the brilliant ensemble playing of the Attractions is great, but that manic energy comes off as desperation and wears after awhile. When E.C. and all show a bit of restraint/cool as on Secondary Modern or New Lace Sleeves or even Watch Your Step they excel, though as usual when he does these songs live he just can't help completely overdoing it.

I agree with your analysis regarding this segment of EC's career. Trust is unanimously regarded as his most underrated effort. I don't disagree with this assertion, but as you pointed out there are small signs peppered throughout the album that seem to indicate a sort of declining fecundity in the writing; much of the albums tracks are composed of well worn ideas and motifs to a greater degree than any previous record. Those were my misgivings in first impression, but I've since given the album a pass and deemed it a first rate record due to the bolstered complexity and maturity of the writing and instrumentation. By the time Imperial Bedroom hit the market, they had clearly replenished their wellspring.

I love you Declan McManus! If you ever get tired of Diana Krall come to America and find me. 😍😘😍😘

    A.... H....

She's like his 3rd wife, right? He'll probably be ready for new one soon.

  14. H.... ....

    one of these songs <3

  15. A.... B....

hadn't heard/seen it in forever. had to come find, enjoy and reminisce.

  16. C.... C....

To me, this is EC&TA peak.

    C.... C....

Yep. Trust is my favorite of his records. Clubland, New Lace Sleeves, Watch Your Step, Shot With His Own Gun. Epic.

"The long arm of the law slides up the outskirts of town." Brilliant. And I love Steve's little piano flourish at the very end of the song.

  18. a.... b....

One of my favorite albums still to this day

  19. P.... C....

Any musician would appreciate the changes at 1:54. I never tire of it. Very tasty

    P.... C....

Absolutely..I've been re-listening Joe Jackson. Similar in many respects..Maybe it was the era

    P.... C....

Just got "Joe Jackson" and "I'm the Man" on cd. Missing my vinyl!!

    P.... C....

I'd say Joe Jackson drew on EC rather then the other way round. I dd like Joe Jackson though - he went off in an odd direction though, seemed to lose his way quickly.

    P.... C....

Was just about to post the same!

    P.... C....

The preceding instrumental passage sets it up nicely. A great bridge like that can propel a song to the next level.

Don't understand why they upload songs on vevo in such bad audio quality? Great song but horrible audio

    D.... S....

Good point, although I will take it.

    D.... S....

Laziness and nostalgia, I'd imagine. (This is right near the quality this stuff was actually broadcast.)

    D.... S....

Maybe there was no better print, or tape copy?

    D.... S....

20 years ago I bought the laserdisc of his early hits, and the quality of the videos was horrible. It's like they took a used VHS, and put that on the disc.

  21. M.... S....

Conveys the ugliness that was/is? club hopping. Didn't go to the nice ones but how nice could any of them be. Glenn Tilbrook sounds great.

    M.... S....

The not-so-nice,seamier ones we used to find ourselves in at first back in the day...until we stumbled upon or someone turned us on to some of the nicer, better, more happening ones.

  22. T.... C....

The Clarences love & support Elvis Costello & The Attractions!

  23. R.... C....

Was the last comment here sarcastic at it's best or the person just lack of brains...? I hope it to be an attempt to comical irony or something. It makes me sad to see things like that in videos like this. Tbh, the fault is mine in the first place I could've just advoid reading the comment section. oh well... Anyway, about the video am music: Brilliantly catchy like always! Costello has a way with words.
