Costello, Elvis - 45 Lyrics
Bells are chiming for victory
There's a page back in history
45
They came back to the world that they fought for
Didn't turn out just like they thought
[Chorus:]
Here is a song to sing to do the measuring
What did you lose?
What did you gain?
What did you win?
Nine years later a child is born
There's a record, so you put it on
45
Nine-year-old puts his money down
45
Every scratch, every click, every heartbeat
Every breath that I held for you
45
There's a stack of shellac and vinyl
Which is yours now and which is mine?
45
[Chorus]
Bass and treble heal every hurt
There's a rebel in a nylon shirt
But the words are a mystery, I've heard
'Til you turn it down to 33 and 1/3
'Cos it helps with the elocution
Corporations turn revolutions
45
So don't you weep and shed
Just change your name instead
What do you lose when it all goes to your head?
I heard something peculiar said:
"Perhaps he's got a shot and now he's dead"
45
Bells are chiming and tears are falling
It creeps up on you without a warning
45
Every scratch, every click, every heartbeat
Every breath that I bless
I'd be lost, I confess
45

Costello, Elvis 45 Comments
My guess would be old EC was tapping the cheerleader and prom chick.
Who is the girl in 1:45? Thanks in advance.
SO AWESOME!!!! Creepy and Lovely and BIG and Intimate all at once! DECLAN FOREVER!!!!
Can anyone really break down the meaning of this video? Or the song for that matter? I like it but I'd like to know more
I see now that the clocks represent the time for people to live. I guess he is representing "god"
It references the end of ww2, the speed of a vinyl record, a type of gun and his age at the time
I really wish I could find the "diner" version video for this song. I loved that video.
enjoy it

It's been pulled down already, Lael.
I live near where the diner video version was recorded. I just ate at the Agawam Diner. I've been searching for the video for many years, to no avail. Does anyone know why it's been buried?
This is the first time I have seen this video - big Elvis fan......who came up with this video idea? Horrible.
most vids are terrible
I can't wait to see you in October!
one of my most treasured elvis costello songs!
Staten Island borough President Jimmy Oddo sent me here.
"It creeps up on you without a warning"
kinda like the Trump administration
Til you turn it down to thirty three and a third
Corporations turn revolutions
Forty-five
They came back to the world that they fought for
Didn't turn out just like they thought
Forty five
Bell's are chiming and tears are falling
It creeps up on you without a warning

Such a great song does not merit such an awful, inane video.
The director must have thought it was Punch the Clock and had the idea to give out a Bunch of Clocks ! No wonder Declan looks bemused.
"45"-actually,the lyrics refer to vinyl records, Not clocks..wish he'd told the director that.
The lyrics refer to a lot of different things. The year World War II ended ("Bells are chiming for victory / There's a page back in history / 45"), the rpm of a vinyl record ("There's a record, so you put it on / 45"), a popular caliber of gun ("'Perhaps he's got a shot and now he's dead' / 45"), an age ("It creeps up on you without a warning / 45"). Sure, the lyrics don't refer to clocks, but they don't /just/ refer to vinyl records either.
Thanks for the insight !-but the video doesn't do DM's poetry justice
Elvis wrote it about turning 45 in age, the clocks being removed are possibly time passing by?
You'd have to be a total idiot to not understand the context and imagery being presented in the music video. If you were looking for a music video you can shut your brain off for and watch like an imbecile, there is plenty of pop music to satisfy you.
IS HE THE VOICE OF WACKO??!!??!!
ROCKS! Great vid also!!
Every scratch, every click, every heartbeat.
he sounds like stewie from family guy...
I totally missed this song when it came out, but cool to see video shot in middle of nowhere MA.
Up Rte.1 outside the Agawam Diner in Rowley, MA.
that little boy @ 1:29 gives his sister the last clock
too cute
Song-writing genius. All you young kids take note, this is how it's done.
This song is awesome ;D
get some vocal lessons. this is horible
@113399 This album wasnt advertised very well. Especially after the last couple costello albums.
I think this was really the beginning of his revival after the bacharach stuff.
Kiddos this is all about those little records grandpa used to listen to on a record player. There was a lot special about them. Gone, forever.
It's not gone. I'm listening to it now :)
How does this only have 8 comments?
@andrewredfern Fuck you.
