Collins, Judy - Both Sides Now Lyrics

Bows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feathered canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
When every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

Collins, Judy Both Sides Now Comments
  1. T.... C....

This song was very popular in 1968 which was my first year in the USN during the Vietnam War. I remember driving from TI in San Francisco, Ca to Los Angeles for Thanksgiving that year and on the way a local dj played that song three times in a row as he said he just couldn't get enough of Judy Collins!

  2. S.... D....

Too look at clouds from both sides, up and down? She's referring to her angelic view looking down from heaven on top of Gods Dome, and looking up from earth after she fell?

This is a Flat Earth angelic song!

  3. T.... C....

Did Collins get permission from Joni Mitchell when she recorded this song?

  4. d.... ....

    吉田類の酒場放浪記で使われてて、すごく良かった。

  5. D.... S....

This song at the end of Hereditary made the ending feel so empty,, like just hearing such a happy song knowing that something terrible had happened left such an empty feeling for me.

    D.... S....

Same for me. Why did the director of Hereditary choose this song? It made me think Judy Collins was a witch talking about weird witchcraft stuff. It made me think the song was evil!

  6. M.... R....

I hear you I grew up in the 70s&80s would love to go back for a time also

  7. S.... M....

Just don't eat the cake, Charlie, and everything will be okay.

    S.... M....

Why didn't that kid have an epipen? Huge plot hole in an otherwise good movie.

    S.... M....

@Napoleon Solo It was all set-up by the cult. No matter what...she was doomed.

  8. H.... ....

WHAT a great timeless song... and what a beautiful voice...

  9. T.... G....

Hereditary brought me here and now I fuken love this song😁

  10. B.... M....

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
    It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Judy sings "win and lose" instead of "give and take".

  11. R.... ....

Hereditary is a sick movie written by a sick person for sick people. Shame on the owner of "Both sides now" for giving permission to use this lovely song in such a horrible way.

    R.... ....

    boo hoo

  12. M.... M....

Judy was a year behind me at East High School in Denver. Lovely, lovely woman with a beautiful voice. Great to see she's still cooking. Marilyn VanDerber was a year ahead of me and she was Miss America. Not everybody can say they went to school with people who became famous!

  13. L.... A....

    Just recalling life's illusions.

  14. L.... V....

Mad men brought me here, again and again...

  15. R.... ....

Haber puesto esta canción justo al acabar hereditary es sin duda una obra de arte de por sí, despues de esa tensión que se vivió al final de la película, de repente llega esta música melódica y tranquila, como diciendo, ya acabó todo, sublime.

  16. A.... M....

This song could calm down even the craziest one ! Thanks Joni, Thanks Judy you've just saved my life. Thanks a lot

  17. B.... i....

    Sweet Judy Blue Eyes

  18. L.... P....

The only positive thing I can recall from Hereditary are the closing credits accompanied by this song. What a strange unsettling and ultimately unsatisfying experience that was but it was worth it on account of the resurrection of this forgotten masterpiece

Beyond beautiful...oh, to be young again...

  36. A.... E....

I like the Neil Diamond's version ahead of this.

  37. P.... K....

Just recently this song by Judy Collins swept in my brain again...and I cant get it out.....

  38. P.... D....

I've been a huge Joni M fan since 1968, thanks to John Peel on the BBC, and while no doubt we have to thank Judy for helping to bring Joni to the music world's attention (but hey, along with Tom Rush and others) and no doubt get her some big royalties at the time, this pappy-poppy cotton-candy version of such a heartrending song is for me simply a travesty. Too often Judy simply "recites" a song in that glorious choirgirl-pure voice of hers, with no soul or feeling coming through at all, as if she's singing demos. A friend of mine finally heard Joni's original many years later and said "Oh wow, I never realised that pretty little song was so profound"... Rifkin has a lot to answer for, but for sure both Judy and Elektra were well pleased. A travesty.

  39. M.... L....

    Before watching Hereditary,

My mom, who was born in 1952, and self described hippie, her taste in music brought me here.

Okay, so did Mad Men, I will admit it.

  47. i.... ....

I prefer this version of this song. Of course Joni Mitcelle is great, but I prefer this. Judy Collins has sung in other versions,
    but I like this most.

Thank you. This song sums things up for me. Just went into remission from advanced cancer then three weeks ago they found a golfball size tumor in my brain. Did not write this note looking for pity or sympathy. Rather it is how I gear up to fight a new beast...

I hope you kick cancer's ass! A stranger in Brazil is sending you best wishes... Take care!

  97. K.... L....

One of Joni Mitchell's best songs. Judy got the radio play though. Even though she was pitchy towards the end. Joni sang it best.

    K.... L....

This was the first version to be released. Joni recorded her version after this one as she was dissatisfied with the way it was sung despite the fact that it opened a lot of doors for her and made her tons of cash.
