For those who don’t know, the lyrics of this song are from the title poem from Cohen’s poetry book that was published in 2006, called The Book of Longing.

At fifteen, this was the first piece of work I had ever read by Cohen. I vividly remember wandering over to the poetry section of a book store (something I had not done before, harnessing the shallow belief that poetry was a pretentious art form) and opening the book to this poem. This was the exact moment that eventually led me to becoming a poetry junkie and collecting douzens of poetry books, a hobby which became my catharsis throughout high school and into my twenties. I had never read something so deeply personal, so convictive and damning, with the signature undertones of a religious hope that only Cohen possessed.

Later that year, I gave myself a tattoo on my wrist of The Unified Heart, a symbol that was drawn by Cohen for another poetry book called The Book of Mercy. It felt like the only appropriate thing to give myself, as I felt an almost supernatural connection to Leonard through his works.

Fast forward 4 years, and I was now working a menial cashier job and living alone in a new and unfamiliar city. I remember reading on my phone at work after clocking out that Cohen had died. It was just after midnight, and while walking home that night the streets were dark and empty. Meditating on his death, I began to sob hysterically, as if I had lost a true friend. I sobbed all the way to my apartment and sat down on my bed to read from The Book of Longing in commemoration and sobbed even more. I had never been so emotional about something as asinine as the death of a celebrity, but the idea of a world without Cohen, without him bring unable to articulate the sad confusion of everything in front of us - this epiphany had presented itself as a sentimental blow to the heart.

Since having initially read this poem, I had always wanted to put chords to it, as I heard it as a song in my head. I imagined it would beautiful if put to music. I imagined how Leonard would carry it with his storytelling smoothness; daunting enough to have the holy spirit brush past your soul.

Fast forward to tonight, I am 22 years old, and came across this song in my recommended. Over seven years have passed since I first read this poem, and hearing it sung by the man himself, in his very last post-mortem work, I have the feeling of having a long awaited prayer answered.

Thank you, Leonard, for carrying this heavy heart though everything.

I discovered him at age 19 - a friend lent me a greatest hits album while I was studying abroad in Italy. I fell in love with his work, and like you, I got The Unified Heart tattooed on my wrist as it just felt like the only thing to do. I was so moved by your words about hearing this song after reading the poem seven years ago. Wishing you well, my fellow member of the Order of the Unified Heart :)

I remember vividly my art history teacher handing out our exams, after some explaining he said "I just want you to know that this morning David Bowie has passed away from us. Good luck." and I sat there for what seemed an eternity reflecting on those words. The man that gave me a license to be an alien, to be removed from society and to see it through a lens of poetry, was gone. I was planning to listen to Blackstar after the exam, since I couldn't get into it whilst studying, and it made so much sense. They both clearly knew their days were counted and simply chose to go out with a blast and that is simply the most inspiring and hopeful message you can deliver as an artist.

@Deszpina Leonard did not get to work on the post-prod as we knew the obvious. His son, Adam, was able to piece to together this final album and gotten some people to fill in the blanks, previous collaborator, Jennifer Warnes, among them.

He is back again.... You will live forever Leonard.

I'm not sure this is the end of Leonard Cohen. He'll be tossing songs over the wall for others to record yet, which, as I understand it, is what happened here. Leonard laid down the semi-sung lyrics, and then great artists turned them into full songs that sound like a new and fresh Leonard Cohen album. Exemplary work. Magical. As great an album as all his albums, and something of a progression. We thought we had lost him, but we haven't; but we won't.

He is up there at the top of the tower of song, with some good friends, no doubt.

13 years after the demo and it was worth the waiting. If only this was released on the album, it would be masterpiece. This way it shows how there is something better than the masterpiece - when Leonard Cohen composes the melodyfor his song personally.

Magnificent, as expected. I'm just waiting for the trolls and anti-Semites to ruin this section, like they have done on various other Cohen posts, so all I have to say to them is that Leonard Cohen is more spectacular dead than you will ever be while you are still living.
