Cohen, Leonard - Diamonds In The Mine Lyrics

The woman in blue, she's asking for revenge,
the man in white -- that's you -- says he has no friends.
The river is swollen up with rusty cans
and the trees are burning in your promised land.
And there are no letters in the mailbox,
and there are no grapes upon the vine,
and there are no chocolates in the boxes anymore,
and there are no diamonds in the mine.

Well, you tell me that your lover has a broken limb,
you say you're kind of restless now and it's on account of him.
Well, I saw the man in question, it was just the other night,
he was eating up a lady where the lions and Christians fight.

And there are no letters in the mailbox
and there are no grapes upon the vine,
and there are no chocolates in the boxes anymore,
and there are no diamonds in the mine.

(You tell them now)

Ah, there is no comfort in the covens of the witch,
some very clever doctor went and sterilized the bitch,
and the only man of energy, yes the revolution's pride,
he trained a hundred women just to kill an unborn child.

And there are no letters in the mailbox,
oh no, there are no, no grapes upon your vine,
and there are, there are no chocolates in your boxes anymore,
and there are no diamonds in your mine.
And there are no letters in the mailbox,
and there are no grapes upon the vine,
and there are no chocolates in your boxes anymore,
and there are no diamonds in your mine.

History tidbit: during the Russian civil war many peasants became too poor to raise children, leading to extremely high abortion rates. When it became clear that authorities didn’t have a practical way to prevent these private and sometimes self-performed procedures Lenin’s Bolshevik government removed the ban: thus the Soviet Union became the first country to fully legalize abortion and doctors were trained in how to provide them safely at state hospitals

  19. P.... L....

Ein unterschätzter Song seines besten Albums. Bestimmt kein musikalisches HighLight, aber soooo echt, so gefühlvoll. Vielleicht sogar etwas primitiv von der Interpretation. Aber es berührt. Wie fast alle seine Songs. Danke , Leonard.

  20. C.... D....

Masterpiece. Never fails to make me smile. 'That's all I've got to say'

  21. S.... M....

I tried to listen to "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" and woo; i almost died. If you can listen to that song the whole way through without crying or being overcome with truth, you're a better man than i... or a much worse woman.
Leonard Cohen is dead. There are no diamonds in the mine.

  22. M.... P....

    rest in peace, my hero.
we'll be eating no lions this sabbath.

Just thought it was an interesting article to share. Who knows what he's getting at with the lyrics in this song but I think It's a pretty honest article that highlights several lyrical samples of an apparent disdain for abortion. I don't think I , nor the article, is "slandering" Cohen, whom I, for the record, am a fan of as well. Interesting you would consider somebody suspecting someone to be pro-life as "slander". Those evil life loving bastards, lol.

    G.... ....

Well, appreciate the high road taken. Abortion is a sensitive subject which is bound to ignite emotions and I do hear ya about the annoyance people conflating art and politics. I'm sure that link may set a few others off yet, lol.

Songs of love and hate was the album that REALLY got me in to Leonard. Been listening since the 70's. Total poetry and total genius! I simply love it!

Mir ging es genau so. Ein Album, das meine "musikalische Welt" (bis dahin fast nur Rock) veränderte.  Und es ist so geblieben.

Rest in Peace Mr Cohen. One of my favorite artists of all time! Lyrical genius!

Why do ppl remember death instead of life better?

    B.... ....

+Tommy White I guess that it's because we are all immortalized by death... and we miss only what we cannot have anymore

  32. M.... V....

    Completely my case.

  33. S.... R....

@simonrobeyns I prefer him to Dylan, but I'm a known obsessive case. This is amazing. This is around when he started letting Jennifer Warnes and his other lady friends carry the vocal work. Love the scratchy voice here.

  34. t.... ....

this song is so much darker for it's upbeat sound and Leonard's scathing bitterness

    t.... ....

    You tell them now. :)

    t.... ....

For real, man. Fucking love this song so much for that reason.

    t.... ....

It's supposed to be bitter and dark and scathing!

Say what you want about songs being able to have multiple meanings blah blah blah... but shit, with lyrics this clear and precise, I think it's pretty hard to deny that Mr. Cohen is saying something pretty specific here. We spend so much time and effort looking for things that might not even be there, when we should be appreciating and improving what we already have. "There are no letters in the mailbox." We created mailboxes, and yet they're not doing their job. "No grapes upon the vine." Sometimes they just don't come. "No chocolates in the boxes anymore." YOU ATE 'EM! And there are no diamonds in the mine! All the verses are just more specific instances of people looking desperately for something that's right in front of them. I think that's why this is one of his angrier/more intense songs as well, it's like he's standing right there next to you, watching you open that chocolate box again and again, hoping for something to reappear. So he yells right in your ear "THERE ARE NO CHOCOLATES IN YOUR BOXES ANYMORE!!" Ugh. This is like my favorite song ever right now. So fucking perfect.

So if I understand well : moral values are usually influenced by religions, one of those is catholicism, hence everyone is supposed to follow roman church values? I do get you're not native english speaker (me neither) but there is a serious flaw in your reasonment there.

On religions, particularely catholicism, as an historian with some curiosity in that field, i'd say the position of the church widely shifted, and that the hard position we see today is pretty new. Not that abortion, extra marital sexual intrecourses, homosexuality and so on were accepted, or even tolerated, but the terms of the condamnation (strangely) became harder. The fact that religions are by essence conservative is obvious, that's their entire point. Now if you want to follow a moral code inspired by a book, why not the Illyade, the Coran, Der Butt (Günter Grass, you might be interested in it)?

edit: passed upon it first reading but: "So they think it is like killing a dog so you can go on living your life"... are you some kind of psychopathic monster?

    S.... V....

I don't think we are supposed to follow roman church values, I was just pointing out how our legal system is inspired by moral values (which are originated from religion) and why that isn't always bad (for example, most atheits would agree that killing people is bad and a crime though that notion is a religious one). The thing is that we think of many religious statements as universal, as if they were beyond religion and essential for our society.
I know that the current Pope has been quite forgiving and open. He authorized priests to pardon women who had abortions and said that the church should apologize to gay people (he also mentioned he cannot judge a faithful gay person), among other statements. He has been trying to change catholic church image and was even criticized by the most conservative Christians.
I don't get why you are so offended by that quote. It is just an example of how I think pro-choice people really see unborn children's life. It is not my appreciation and it's funny how it is cool to talk about real-life abortion but an hypotetical example featuring dogs is just too much. What I meant is that even some people who stand for abortion think that the fetus is alive, but it is clear that they can't empathize at all with them and they always go on talking about the problems of pregnant women. So, deep inside they think fetus lives don't matter that much, they have a hierarchy of lives where fetus are lower forms.

    S.... V....

Killing a dog is not ok, it has consciousness, and is living (as in the world). There are plainty of dogs killed everyday, it's not hypothetical. I had to kill a dog a few months ago (well a vet did it obviously). She (or it, whatever) coundln't move anymore, thus unable to live a dog life. I didn't just "go on"... it's a harsh decision, because I value a dog life, had spent many years with her and I think about her everyday.
The current pope is shady on many subjects, including homosexuality, abortion, or pedophilia in the church. He tries to change the image yes, but is actually closer to Jean-Paul II in his approach (wich was hell of a conservative mind), while most progressive decisons taken by the last three popes were by Ratzinger (described as conservative at the time of his mandate).

But that's not the most important point : "I was just pointing out how our legal system is inspired by moral values (which are originated from religion)" that is a really bold statement. Because putting things like that suppose a religion preexisting men (wich is impossible). If you put it like this : "moral values (and other considerations, like the fact that we are social animals) inspired religions wich were at the core codification of social behaviours (legal codes)" it makes more sense, and is backed by the world history.
To be clear, I've nothing against religions, I do think they (in their multiplicity) are responsible for some of the greatest achievements on earth... but i consider myself as an atheist, and have moral values, and respect of life is one of them, and have a spiritual life.
But fetuses are not born. As such not alive. But maybe you want to give bacteria and viruses the right to live in peace? Forgot you wanted to kill dogs...

    S.... V....

I was writing a reply but youtube is so shitty and ridiculous that decided to automatically delete my whole comment after I clicked "see more answers". I'm just too pissed to start again. Perhaps I will tomorrow, but dunno.

  37. S.... R....

this guys a serious writer, holy shit after listening through this album
this is one serious badass writer, heavy stuff even next to an almighty Dylan

    S.... R....

Bob Dylan looked up to Leonard, you can read more about it but it's pretty funny stuff.

  38. L.... L....

I love the angry voice in this!

    L.... L....

yeah that gutteral growl he has. love it. "Eating up a lady where the lions and Christians fight"

  39. c.... ....

@ Eva McConville The only one shitting all over the place is you.

  40. E.... M....

Isn't this the guy who shat himself on stage after crying loads?
    His voice is horrible.

    E.... M....

    shut up eva

    E.... M....

Yes, it is horrible. It was meant to be so. It's on purpose. It's a joke. I am not offended, find it quite good. It is a satirical statement. He is making fun of
the Nashville song, which s quite asinine. Find he does it quite well. Do believe he had Kris Kristofferson in mind. With whom he had a bit of a beef on account of his good looks.

    E.... M....

    Eva McConville :/ go away

    E.... M....

    haha you suck Eva!

    E.... M....

    No. That was Julio Iglesias.

  41. R.... A....

How many great line is in Leonard Cohen?

  42. S.... G....

so you don't like the song but you come to this link to say how much ...you don't like it...classy. personally i find it fucking amazing! that's why I came here. It sounds like the song that inspired Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes (the vocals are very reminiscent) and it is far ahead of its time. It's funny too, if you give it a chance, and the lyrics, the delivery and even the back up vocals are outstanding. there, i said it.

  43. b.... h....

one of the greatest songs of all time

  44. v.... ....

It is, rather obviously by intention, sung as if by a drunken man, offkey and slurring, with a tune nothing like anything else of his, notably lighter in mood.

I do not think this song's appeal is aesthetic and I do not think its content inspires happiness either. It's a statement, and hating it is natural.

    v.... ....

Just give it a decade or two . You'll come around.

  45. G.... ....

At least it's good you love Cohen :D

  46. F.... A....

    a real master piece...

  47. m.... ....

Great comment, couldn't agree more with you!

  48. N.... N....

I think the great thing about any art - certainly any good art - is that so many people can interpret it in so many different ways. The real master pieces can mean so many different things to so many different people. Its the "scholars" that caught up in the creators meanings that trouble me. - I always wonder if maybe they're missing the real beauty of things.( I have considered that maybe someone had just poked something up the Mona Lisas Ar**se. ;))

  49. J.... S....

Leonard Cohen is Jewish, and was born into a Jewish family. Why do you just make shit up on the spot?

  50. b.... ....

Oh, You too? but no less than many other songs I entertain the neighborhood with. I want them ALL to enjoy my ass kicking JBL speakers.Ya, I know my rig is old but decibels RULE!

  51. b.... c....

what a piss off these f#&n adds are

  52. A.... ....

I BLAST THIS SONG AT A 15 BLOCK FUCKING RADIUS

  53. j.... ....

@carolynsoftball2013 You're hilarious. Please post on all videos. LOL. Catholic. And now without sarcasm: Nice insight MrHommeO.

  54. S.... W....

I hate this song; I love Leonard Cohen.

  55. l.... ....

It's strange but I do think this song predates the baudy atmosphere of some songs on Death Of A Ladies' man (1977) like Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On.

  56. H.... ....

I saw Leonard live Massey Hall,Toronto,mid-70s,for his"New Skin for the Old Ceremony"tour. For his fellow Canadians he altered a line to:"And the maple trees are burning in your promised land."He was enthusiasticdid a long encore, saying: "we're going to be here for a while".But his band evidently hadn't rehearsed enough material&ended up doing two or three songs twice. I recall the backup singers smiling when he called out a song they'd already done. The audience didn't seem to mind. A good show.

  57. z.... ....

I love Leonard Cohen and also think this is his best album (avalance is amazing) but this song is just horrible and I have to skip it every time. By far the worst song of Leonard Cohen (not lyrics). I seriously dont get why many has it as a favourite..

    z.... ....

Perhaps because it is utterly astonishing....

  58. z.... ....

I love Leonard Cohen and also think this is his best album (avalance is amazing) but this song is just horrible and I have to skip it every time. By far the worst song of Leonard Cohen (not lyrics). I seriously dont get why many has it as a favourite..

  59. b.... ....

    Great song.

This is an early protest against abortion. In fact at 2:40, there's an overt reference to sterilization and abortion.

The song actually dates back to the early 70's, before the issue became so highly charged politically.

Later on, in an act of uncharacteristic cowardice, Cohen tacked on a cheesy anti-Vietnam prelude to disguise the song's message which by then had become politically incorrect.

    Nobody's perfect I guess.
