Coe, David Allan - Waylon Willie And Me Lyrics

It was like nothing I'd ever heard
And The Eagles flew in from the west coast
Like The Byrds they were trying to be free
While in Texas the talk turned to Outlaws
Like Willie and Waylon and me.

Hey!
Well that ?somewhere? Texas music is in the make
And we've been making music that is free
Doing one night stands and playing with our bands
Willie, Waylon and me

Oh Mad Dog! go to lead

They say The Beatles were just the beginning
Of everything music could be
Just like The Stones I was rolling a lone
Like a ship lost out on the sea
And Joplin would die for the future
And Dylan would write poetry
And in Texas the talk turned to Outlaws
Like Willie and Waylon and me

Hey!
My name is David Allan Coe and I'm from Dallas Texas.
They say Texas music is in the make
And we've been making music that is free
Doing one night stands and playing with our bands
Willie, Waylon and me

Big Jim!

I'd heard The Burritos out in California
Could fly higher than The Byrds
Roger McQuinn had a 12 string guitar.
It was like nothing I'd ever heard
And The Eagles flew in from the west coast
Like The Byrds they were trying to be free
While in Texas the talk turned to Outlaws
Like Willie and Waylon and me

Does anyone know the songwriting history of this song and the Rides Again album it was on? This song was solely credited to his wife, Deborah Lynne Coe, on the album and DAC was only credited as songwriter on 2 songs on the entire album. I assume he did write this song and all the other ones his wife is the one credited for. This was the only album like this where his wife was credited instead of him. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Used to know a guy who'd often play this song at our weekly house parties, he moved back to the town he grew up in got into cocaine and rented a room to a crazy chick in exchange for sexual favors and died from a heart attack before his 55th birthday. Rest in Piece brother, damn shame you're gone.

I had the "privilege" to see DAC in concert in the early 80s in a small auditorium in Greenwood SC. His band played close to an hour and finally DAC came on stage. He came on stage using some kind of zip cord, he was dressed in a pink jumpsuit with lots of bedazzlers on his costume. Wasn't sure what song he sang or performed. He was so incoherent and really messed up, nobody knew what song he was really trying to perform. He was only on stage for maybe 10 minutes. For the next 2 hours his band did a bang up show that I really enjoyed! Too bad, I've seen a lot of great artists over the course of my years who really screwed up during some concerts, and later I saw them again and they were great. I guess the one & only time I saw DAC was obviously not one of his good days. I'm thinkin', I have been on some good drugs during my life, but I knew I didn't want to do anything he was doing that night!  So, all I can say is "there ya go"!

    a.... ....

Because coe also sang a lot of white supremacist music. Libtards get easily offended by things that were done in a different time. Whiney losers ruin everything

  33. D.... D....

He's not from Dallas Tx but I sure love this song. Ole Dave is from the same town as me. Good ole Akron Ohio. He sang classical Italian music and called himself Angelo Lucarelli. When it didn't go well he decided to create a country western persona and it took off. He stayed out of jail and made his fortune. I know these things because my dad was arrested with Dave once and they used to steal cars together in the 50's. He came to our house when I was 11 and played his guitar and did a few numbers. He and my pops talked about their teenage days as delinquents and how Dave used to sing old Italian songs. I always felt fortunate to know these few facts about him.

    D.... D....

Dee Dish any chance your dad's name was Merle?

    D.... D....

this is a very interesting story. do you have anything tio corroborate it? I knew it was intentional to be a caricature of country outlaw. he had a black drummer yet drops the N bomb like noones business. some people would even call it satire.

BUT I have never heard of him singing Italian music. would love to hear this lol

    D.... D....

@Jake Sargent back in 1953 we stole a car old merle and me

  47. W.... S....

Desert Rose band were good to. There are some exceptions. Maybe those that don't receive airplay.

  48. W.... S....

I haven't heard this in a long time. Great song. Better than today's country music or country music since the 90s.I like the Byrd's Waylon and the flying burrito brothers. Also Gram parsons. Wish country could sound like this and not auto tuned. This is better than the overrated Garth Brooks.

  49. T.... B....

How can you not like this?

    T.... B....

The Byteshark well, have you listened to some of DAC's more taboo music...pretty racist stuff. I love DAC and think he belongs up there with greats of great country music, but the dislikes could be from those songs.

    T.... B....

    Jared,
You are correct in your remarks about his bigoted, racist stand in a lot of his off color songs which I most certainly do not endorse. I was only addressing this selection which i like a lot.

    T.... B....

I agree better than country music since the 90s.

My mother and father went to see David in concert years ago and I ought to inform you that this song is on the I Love Country album.

  56. C.... R....

David Allen Coe wasn't from Dallas, he was born and raised in Ohio...

    C.... R....

Nah, Raymer. Don't matter where you're born. If you're "from Texas," means you're a TEXAN. That's the law.

    C.... R....

Also his stepbrother Jack who is a member of the Outlaws M/C was a member of a Dallas M/C first.

    C.... R....

He was born & raised in Ohio and spent some time in the Boys' Industrial School (a reform school) in Lancaster. He mentions it in the intro to "Pledging My Love." He might have moved to Texas but he was originally from Ohio.

    C.... R....

    magically has southern accent

going to see DAC on the 22nd in ohio, gotta see him once before he dies

    t.... b....

Look at it this way, you live in a time where you get to listen to him as much as you want online, and you dont have to wait for him to release his next albums, they're already out and available. I hear ya though, I've never fit in with my generation of millennial faggots.

    t.... b....

    Same lol

  72. v.... v....

Dunno if DAC was or is respectable, but what a crooked, twisted and wild talent.
The talent that so many or most so called singers don't even know the meaning of. It's sure, it's sad and banal, we say real country does not exist anymore and it's so true.

    v.... v....

Hell, then why you listening then.

  73. U.... M....

good old tune. gotta love the guys

  74. M.... M....

why is there anyone like this

  75. m.... ....

God bless David Allan Coe!  Man I was drinking at a bar called Fat Dawg"s in Lubbock, Texas in the 1970's and David Allan Coe was playing live that night at Fat Dawg's.  And some ignorant fool of a college student in the audience make some rude remark to Coe and Coe just looked at him and said, "Someone better tell that boy that I've been in prison," and  he gave that kid a look that would scare a granite statue..and I mean that kid left the bar asap.

    m.... ....

By the way RIP Burt Reynolds/the bandit. He’s with snow man jerry reed and Sheriff buferd t justice Jackie Gleason

    m.... ....

Cool story! Bonne histoire !.. Merci / thank you.

  76. k.... B....

We need more true country music.

    k.... B....

@kandy Bradford There was a point somewhere in the late 80s that destroyed it with commercialism.

    k.... B....

@Slurpon Muhdick real country died on may 9th 1989

    k.... B....

Keith Urban and Blake Shelton have a song every 5 or so years that is true country

  77. M.... ....

Lol kid rock aint got a bitch ass thing on coe he been maken music before he was born

  78. 6.... S....

Fun fact: Kid Rock helped get Coe up on his feet to start off his outlaw ways.

    6.... S....

Lol so much ignorant hostility toward this comment

    6.... S....

Picked the right audience for this bait. Nice work.

he is talking about California bands  roger McGuinn the freebirds  the eagles Janis Joplin etc

    j.... k....

@PORKY B I should have put a comma after California bands so people like u could grasp my meaning that he was referring to cali bands as well as the other artist and yes the freebirds were a wrestling group and a rock band look it up be informed

    j.... k....

@james kidd I think you're referring to the Byrds?  I don't think he ever intended for the Freebirds to be included in what he was singing about.

    j.... k....

+gmurphy10  DAC performed live at The Omni in Atlanta Ga, 1987 with the Fabulous Freebirds. This was well after this recording.

    j.... k....

Also The Flying Burrito Brothers, they were actually from California. But yeah, The Byrds.
