Cliff Richard - Wild Geese Lyrics

Look at the golden dawn
See the sunset
On the silver thorn
Just remember
It was all for you and me
High on the ragged hill
He was dying
And he's dying still
Oh my lord
You were born to set men free

And the mission bells are ringing
As the prisoner finds release
And the love we knew is returning
Like wild geese

And the signal fires are burning
For the everlasting peace
And the love we knew is returning
Like wild geese

Only the closest heart
Could believe that love's
A dying art
After all the
Hungry mouths he fed
Eyes on the gentle one
Looked for the kindness
But they gave him none
Not a sip of wine
Or a crust of bread

A friend of mine, a video cassette lending shop owner, an expert in English movies, suggested this movie to me in 1990. It was there in his collection. For some reasons, I ignored his suggestion that time !! Here I'm, remembering the name of the movie he suggested 30 years ago, searching it in here, watching it !! It's a classic ! From India, Jan 2020

The intense training the actors had underwent during the shooting of this movie may have paid off in the end!

  12. R.... M....

Yes, go along with all those positive comments. A friend of mine had a role as one of the mercenaries and was in the bush with the unit as they shot much of the film. He said that the time they had with Harris, Burton and Moore was marvellous, not just the filming but the time they had off set. I understand that Elizabeth Taylor and Anne Turkel were with Burton and Harris during the filming in the bush. What a time that must have been! All make-believe but so relevant to our real world.

  13. B.... C....

There's more testosterone in this film than Hollywood's output in the last 10 years

This is/was one of the best action movies ever made. It had REAL actors in it, not just movie stars. You cared about the characters and what happened to them. The story was deep and the ending was great. If they tried to re-make this with todays actors, it would probably be politically correct, unbelievable garbage. I'd watch this over today's CGI crap any day!!

“Do i have to ask how it went?”
    “No.”
Classic dialogue from two genuinely fantastic actors. This film almost brings me to tears that such camaraderie exists. RIP all the great cast who have left us

At the 1:46:27 mark, Bob Simmons makes a small cameo as the pilot (the first ever James Bond in the Gunbarrel).

I never tire of watching this. The funny thing is that for years, I didn't realise that the recorded version I watched on Betamax was edited for violence and swearing and in some cases, slightly different versions of several scenes were filmed, such as in Peter and Limbani's big scene around the 1:30:00 mark, Peter says 'nonsense' instead of 'bullshit'.

  31. R.... s....

Great mercenary movie, one of my favorites.

    R.... s....

It's a racist movie that funded apartheid.

    R.... s....

@James Henderson I do think it strolled out the old trope of white man as saviour, but in 1978 that was pretty much a standard. That said, why do you consider it racist and how did you link it to the funding of apartheid? I know the film was shot in South Africa, which means the country received some sort of renumeration, and that there were protests about that fact. The truth of the matter (from my perspective) is that many who protested did so purely because of the connection to South Africa, there was no smoking gun that revealed some conspiracy related to funding apartheid. That said, I am curious to know what your logic is, and will be the first to agree with you if you can support your comment. I am a black man of African ancestry born and raised in the U.S. but I am also a military man with 14 years of total soldiering experience, and a reasonable amount of accumulated knowledge. I walked into this film some 41 years ago (yep, I'm that old) and interpreted it to be an action film with a political bent to it. But I didn't see it as some racist conspiracy film that elevated white supremacy to some new level. So forgive me when I say that I think you made a blanket comment without doing any research. South Africa gave permission for filming - yes. The film propogates racism - no. Richard Burton himself said he initially turned the film down not because of racism but because it glorified mercenaries. Burton also thought the film was beneath him in terms of quality and called it a "shitty" film on more than one occasion. My responses are based on recollections and research on the subject, nothing more.

    R.... s....

@Reign simons They broke the ban on filming in South Africa.

    R.... s....

@Reign simons yes you ask some of the questions I was wondering.... I pretty sure that elsewhere this same person you addressed is the same one who made nasty comments that they were glad Rodger Moore died in horrible Agony from cancer... and then added another comment they were glad Rodger Moore went blind before he died .

    R.... s....

@Reign simons if you look for the logo that is a blue circle with the letter C in it and the person's name is Christian Orr... it was at the top of all the comments.... in the replies you will see where this same person , James Henderson said those rotten things unfairly about Rodger Moore

@Johnny 'Egha They broke the ban on filming in SA.

    J.... '....

James Henderson broke a ban to raise money ? Doesn’t seem plausible

    J.... '....

@Johnny 'Egha There was a ban on filming in South Africa during apartheid.

    J.... '....

James Henderson I get that part. But how do proceeds from the movie fund apartheid ??

    J.... '....

@Johnny 'Egha The actors and film crew had to live in South Africa for months.

  49. J.... C....

I remember seeing it in the theater just before Thanksgiving in 1979 with my friend Jon Marc he was 16 and I was 15 at the time. It inspired us both to join into military service. And we did. Not for the money that mercenaries make. But to hold up the spirit of democracy that the film showed. The best example is when Hardy Kruger carried President Lombardi to keep him alive. And was willing to put back his racist views. We both saw President Lombardi as a modern version of MLK. The funny (or not so funny thing at the time) was that we had a side businesses. We robbed drug dealers . We stole their money and literally flushed the drugs down the drain. After seeing this movie. We stopped. Now in my last days I wonder what would have happened if we did not stop. A life may have been saved (the drug we flushed did save lives) and the drugs we stole was not a path not taken. And I confessed this to get you attention. Jerry Wilburt Conner SSN:317-36-4857 DOD: 6/9/1963. He is not dead. He assumed his brothers identity. His name is Lee Conner. He lives in Belgium. A photographer who also genetically alters Orchards .And my Father is connected to the laying of mines between the shipping routes between Cuba and the Us in the early 60's. And the assassination of President Kennedy.

Where Eagles Dare and this are my fave Richard Burton films. Roger Moore was so great in this as well. Just a fun old skool movie that you don't see the likes of anymore. Pity.

The book is a lot more violent than the film and pretty much everyone dies by the end. Good read though.

Don't go neer this classic with a remake, leave well alone.

Agreed , you simply don't fix what's not broken .

    S.... T....

I 100% agree with you on that!

    S.... T....

But a re-release should be in order. You never hear about films like this anymore. Damn its a shame, with all the half-assed remakes coming out today Netflix should jump at this movie.

    S.... T....

You know they will though. They're intent on destroying every aspect of Western culture. Postmodern French pricks.

    J.... R....

@John Normal that is probably right, but then and again, The Special Air Service Regiment ( SASR) obviously didn't arbitrarily tell His Superiors at HQ in Hereford that He and His UK Special Forces Team was going to infiltrate into the target area any way He wanted. THEY ( the Higher-ups) told Him in The OPORD ( OPERATIONS ORDER) how He and His Men of War would be inserted into the battlespace.

    J.... R....

@John Rodriguez Well they were generally given more leeway than other regiments. Actually for B20 he insisted on airdrop with no vehicles for his crew and it was disastrous. Other scud sabotage mission crews had quads and motocross bikes and were successful extracted

    J.... R....

@John Normal OK, I can agree with that. I Am Prior Service USMC and US Army, and, I have little to no no knowledge of the United Kingdom Armed Services. You do, so, I defer To you on the British Military Forces. Ooh Rah and Hooah United States and United Kingdom Armed Forces!!

  67. J.... R....

The Wild Geese, The Dogs of War, etc.and et.al., are examples of movies about Mercenary Soldiers of Fortune doing some damage and destruction in true Paramilitary form. I Am Prior Service USMC and US Army, and, if I can't be a Mercenary,at least,I can watch Cinema Pictures about these Soldiers of Fortune.🔫🗡️⚔️💥🔥💀

  74. n.... ....

One of my favourite films. Very different to Daniel Carney’s original novel ‘The thin white line’ which has a much darker plot and ending and is imho a much better story. The heavily adapted movie plot is loosely based on fact when a mysterious bullet riddled plane load of mercenaries made an emergency landing in Rhodesia in 1968 carrying the dying ex-president of the Congo Moïse Tshombe. The movie title was changed to The Wild Geese because a film called the thin white line already existed and the name was adopted from the wild geese mercenary patch worn by legendary mercenary Colonel ‘Mad’ Mike Hoare’s 5 commando mercenary unit who were rumoured to have been on the 1968 Rhodesia aircraft but it was never confirmed. Interestingly enough Colonel Hoare has turned 100 years old this year and he still lives in Ireland (congratulations sir). Also interesting is that the Author Daniel Carney makes an uncredited very brief ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ appearance as a Rhodesian man in a striped shirt holding a torch on the runway at 2hours 14 mins and 28 and 30 seconds respectively he is flanked by two unknown people wearing red tops. Carney lived in Rhodesia most of his life.

This film will forever hold a special place in my in my heart. My uncle, who was really much more like a father to me, took me to see this when I was a kid. It is a memory I will always cherish.

He just passed away this past February at the age of 84 unexpectedly.

Watching this brings back all my fond memories of him. Can't help but still get more than a little sad.

He was the best man I ever knew.

So basically.... a bunch of Viagra consuming drunken knobs are hired to take on an Army 30 years younger them. While training committing a firearm safety infraction. They suit up for Africa to face an army with only one purpose in their lives to run into hand grenades blowing themselves up. Then the Columbian cartel shows up carrying a weapon system too heavy for that aircraft in real life which proceeds to reduce the size of the good guy force in half. It ends up an ambush site protecting a 50 year old aircraft maintained at flying status in Africa. The bad guys commence more "Operation Human Shield" at hand grenades. When they die it makes the same sound as a giraffe recieving an enema from a set of bull horns sideways. It ends with the 2nd biggest douche bag to the drug dealer getting shot in the gut like it hit him in the heart. It ends with a song I've only heard once in my life in the 1980s inside a bathroom stall at Chi chi's. Is this how it went?

It makes a mockery of Western promises of human rights, civil rights and freedom of speech when RICH people rob/ plagiarize and REPEATEDLY PHYSICALLY harm INNOCENT POOR people and then have the NERVE to claim that they stand for EQUALITY! This is DISGUSTING HYPOCRISY.

  93. S.... B....

There really are people like the man at the end who pay people to kill innocent people. Some of us were made targets on the lies of mad people and on their lies, dangerous Illuminati criminals came into the lives of very innocent people. They stalk you across the globe and poison you again and again and they bribe, blackmail and incite people who have never met you to lie about you. They follow you to your own continent and bribe people and incite people to harm you. People tell you to move on and be positive. How can people move on when they are being STALKED EVERYWHERE they go and poisoned repeatedly? This was the SIXTH time that I have been poisoned, an INNOCENT person and this happened after ten years and ten thousand pounds being spent on detox after being poisoned the first five times- an INNOCENT PERSON. This is HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE. INNOCENT people being framed for crimes they did not commit or benefit from and poisoned again and again and again and again and again and again. This is MURDER. This was done AGAIN just last month ( March 2019) to an INNOCENT person who had been a single parent's FATHERLESS CHILD WHO WAS EXEMPLARY. There is NO EXCUSE for murdering INNOCENT people. NONE. This is CRIME.

  94. W.... G....

This is an excellent movie. I saw it in the 80’s and I appreciated it too much. I hoped to watch it again one day, and this day is today. Thank you for uploading. Congratulations from Brazil.

  95. A.... ....

My favourite war movie of all times.

  96. T.... ....

Men looked like men in old movies, not like big boys, and I like it, except... Look at one of those characters , _supposedly_ 42 (OK, 47, but there is another _supposedly_ 43). Well, I'm 42, yet I look like a teenager compared to him, and he looks like someone of my parents' generation! I mean, I do have wrinkles, my hair are "on a strategic retreat to the north" and I have quite a lot of gray hair already, yet I look much younger than these men in the movie. Thus I guess, it's not just movie industry and so called cult of youth, people on average _actually_ do look younger naturally, with no help of surgery and skin care products.
