Clark, Petula - Never On A Sunday Lyrics

Never on a Sunday when the church is full of people
And the bells are ringing in the steeple, la la....

Oh, you can kiss me on a Monday
A Monday, a Monday is very very good
Or you can kiss me on a Tuesday
A Tuesday, a Tuesday in fact I wish you would
Or you can kiss me on a Wednesday
A Thursday, a Friday, and Saturday is best
But never never on a Sunday
A Sunday, a Sunday 'cause that's my day of rest

Come anyday and you'll be my guest
Anyday you say but my day of rest
Just name the day that you like the best
Only stay away on my day of rest

You can kiss me on a cool day
A hot day, a wet day which ever one you choose
Or try to kiss me on a grey day
A May day, a pay day and see if I refuse
And you make it on a bleake day
A freak day, a week day why you can be my guest
But never never on a Sunday
A Sunday's the one day I need a day to rest

Just name the day that you like the best
Only stay away on my day of rest

Never on a Sunday when the church is full of people
And the bells are ringing in the steeple, la la....

Oh you can kiss me on a Monday
Monday, Monday's very good
Or you can kiss me on a Tuesday
Tuesday and I wish you would
Or you can kiss me on a Wednesday
Thursday, Friday and Saturday is best
But never never on a Sunday
Sunday, Sunday 'cause that's my day of rest

Clark, Petula Never On A Sunday Comments
  1. s.... ....

Man this reminds me of driving to the dentist in the Chrysler Lebaron wagon with the wood panels, but it was the 8-track of Herb Alpert's version.

  2. K.... W....

I keep hearing an instrumental version of this in an advertisement on TV ..haven't heard it since the 60's.I was just a young kid about 7 or so and loved it then and still loving it today. If it wasn't for the ad I may never have remembered it. Connie Francis has a version of this too but I think Petula's is better -- sorry Connie

Someday I'll be 64 with grandchildren, I'll have quit martial arts and gymnastics and video games and everything that i love by then, and I'm gonna look back and listen to a song I loved when I was 16(now) and cry.
This scares the hell out of me.

    L.... Y....

And I have no doubt that you will still be a very attractive woman even at that age my dear.  Some women just age very gracefully as I am sure you will do.  You don't have to worry about age catching up with you Larissa.

    L.... Y....

Will you still meet me, will you still greet me, when Im 64.  You would not get that but people who are old like me will.

    L.... Y....

Just remember: Youth & Skill will never overcome Old Age & Treachery!

    NEVER,NEVER ON A SUNDAY?

    D.... h....

Any day is a good day.  =)

  45. T.... o....

Petula Clark nar. 1932 vo West Ewell v grofstve Suurey v UK naspievala coververziu tejto piesne v upravenej verzii.Ide o grecku pieseň z filmu režisera Julesa Dassina , ktorý mal premieru 1. oktobra 1960 ako Never On Sunday s Melinou Mercouri nar.

  46. R.... Q....

    how nice this song

  47. D.... G....

i wish a 60s station would play music like this instead of motown.

    D.... G....

There was a station called Kool 105 that used to and I think still does play oldies. I became aware of them right when they went on the air. I thought she was sort of a kind of artist that was kind of a think of the early sixties and not much else. That could not be further from the truth as she started performing in public at the age of 12 and has such range and as an artist can go up and down the scales (forgive me I'm not a musician if the terminology is wrong). She also has done so many genres.

  48. B.... M....

I agree. I like Petula, but Connie Francis had an effortless V8 voice that never struggled to reach any note.

    B.... M....

Bill Moss Petula Clark was a professionally trained singer!!!

  49. H.... N....

Didn't Norman Wisdom once sing this?

  50. S.... H....

SHE SOLD OVER A HALF A BIIIION RECORDS WORLD WIDE. WHICH MAKES
HER THE BEST SELLING WOMAN SINGER EVER!!!!

    Nice to hear Petula's version.

  52. J.... b....

    nana mouskouri, melina mercouri

  53. r.... b....

great song of miss petula clark...

  54. d.... ....

No disrespect to Petula..but I think Connie Francis sings the best version of this song..

  55. B.... ....

No problem. Most music we hear is usually rehashed from some superior more soulful original track.

  56. S.... C....

Hey there...I've loved this song since i was a small kid. I didn't know who Melina Mecouri was until I saw your post. And although I love Petula's version, it doesn't come close to Mecouri's version. Thank you!

  57. K.... W....

Ah! I love this :D 'the arm is off' and I am playing over and over and having a jolly Sunday morning! Thanks for posting :)

I love the guitar work in this song. If I were to learn the guitar, I would try to learn this song first. Then again, I am a major fan of Ms. Clark... check out the Muppets version of this song on my channel.....funny.

  69. T.... ....

The Muppets have a version of this song too. Funny stuff!

  70. T.... ....

    !7 folks are pea brained.

  71. c.... ....

@missloivissaflower Now see, one learns something everyday! Thank you! (But don't tell my grandson, he thinks his grandma knows everything, because I tell him so. He's 4 so it's OK.) Connie Francis had a really cute cover version, but I preferred the Chordette's harmonies.

  72. m.... ....

    @chrisst41
and it was originally a Greek song sung by Nana Mouskouri and called 'the children of Piraeus' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  73. c.... ....

  80. J.... 7....

i like this version more than the connie francis one. although melinas is still divine!

  81. p.... ....

Believe it or not this was my mother's favorite song.

  82. r.... ....

As someone pointed out downthread, this is an album track, from Petula's 1965 "International Hits" LP. The LP was something of a "concept" album, containing covers of hits mostly associated with other singers. None of the songs were selected for single release. Instead the LP shows her interpretive abilities as a singer. For other tracks from this release, check out her ballad version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and her rendition of "You Can't Keep Me From Loving You."

  83. g.... ....

I wish! Petula you are lovely.

  84. H.... ....

Eargasm! Song has perfect harmony and its PERFECT!

  85. F.... F....

Petula Clarke sings many good songs, e.g. "Kiss Me Goodbye". But this song "Never On Sunday" by her is poor copycat..

  86. k.... s....

    klassse song....... einfach klasse

  87. P.... S....

Nice version but can't be compared with the original one of Melina Merkouri, which was the soundtrack from the Movie "Never on Sunday" with the original title "The children of Pireus". Watch and compare

  88. N.... P....

If any of you like real singers, go listen to Lena Horne sing the shit out of this song.

  89. .... ....

the song is greek originally, its called hhe children of piraeus english translation.
