A lovely version of a lovely song, although the chorus is almost identical to "Fly Me To The Moon". Surely that must have been noted at the time?

I prefer Petula's version to Andy Williams' because it is sexier. Andy's version is more a "sing-a-long". Petula is a class act. She let Andy sing this on her own TV special and didn't tell Andy her version has been released as a single. He hadn't had a hit record for a while, so Petula let him plug his version on her show. Andy was a class act too.

Don't remember this as a kid but I caught a clip of this in some mediocre movie from the 80s probably and it stood out for some rrason.

What I love about this song is that the orchestra are all REAL musicians... playing real instruments... actually blowing into it, strumming it, or playing it... not programing a machine to make sounds... it sounds so REAL and great... imagine, a REAL drummer...

Prefer Andy Williams version but great respect for British Invasion contributions of that era.

I wouldn't call it a dud, but Williams pumped a little more life into it; he made it swing. His version always reminded me of "Fly me to the moon."

I like Ms Clark's version the best.   Of course as far as the USA is concerned.  Even if Mr William's had a terrible version, it would still be the bigger hit in the USA.  That is how many Americans see the world.  Nothing beyond its shores.  So Ms Clark naturally would come out in 2nd place.    Which is a shame.

I looked around on iTunes....I really like this down-tempo arrangement the best and seems to hold up to modern listening better than Andy's happy go lucky fa la la la version.  Her version of 'Games People Play' is also great ... love both .... Had this Happy Heart stuck in my head all mornin'

Pet is the best.

I grew up with Petula Clark. She is wonderful and nothing I am aware of shows off her emotional accessibility better than the two numbers used in "Billy's Kiss." I will never, ever, ever let go of the memory of Sean Hayes and Brad Rowe in tails dancing in unison. Brad Rowe is also in one of the best gay indies called "Shelter." See it if you can.

This version and the Andy William's version are both beautiful, but I think this version of Petula Clark resembles the original instrumental version of James Last, who composed the song, a bit more. Hard to imagine that the song first was thrown away by James Last and it was found by his wife who asked to him to record it. It became a world hit. 

This is the better version of the song.

Mr. Jones is correct, it was her show & I'm sure she knew he was doing the song. They rehearse. 

Both versions are great.  Williams is closer to easy listening and Petula's has more of a rock/pop edge that you can hear in the drums and rhythm section, and her vocals. 

Kind of the opposite, really.  Andy's version rocks and Pet's version rolls.

Yup I just got done watching this, thought I'd revisit one of my fave movies when I was a teenager LOL! Always fall back in love with the music and flick :) Definitely a classic!

Not true.Andy guested on HER tv special "portrait of petula" (available on dvd,) she graciously let Andy sing his version on her show! Big mistake in hindsight but shows what a generous lady she was and still is performing in 2012!

Funny, I always knew this song from Andy Williams since I was a child. I didn't know Petula did it until i saw Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss. They both do it so well.

This was one of 11 Pet Clark hits to score in the U.S. but not in her native England. Her version first charted in the U.S. June 12, 1969 and peaked at #62 over a five week chart run. And even though it was her best single since the magnificent "Kiss Me Goodbye" in 1968, it charted lower than any of her previous 16 U.S. hits. It was also eclipsed by Andy Williams' concurrent version of the same song, which reached #22.

It really is all in the words - the lyrics it not about throwaway pop tune aka Andy Wlliams she made a bif mistake giving him lea way with this song! Petula is the ultimate.

Not realizing that she had just released "Happy Heart," HE sang the song on that episode -- which, of course, promoted HIS just recorded single. Pet, offstage, was understandably stunned and hurt. (And, of course, had no TV show of her own.) Both versions first charted April 12, with Andy's peaking at #22 over an eleven week run. The version by Pet -- whose U.S. career was then declining -- peaked at #62 over a five week run.

You have part of the story right except, it was Pet's T.V. special and Petula let Andy do the song because he had not had any hits recently . She was most definitely NOT stunned or hurt! She graciously gave Andy a break to sing the song he was so excited about when he and Petula were discussing which material they would be doing on the show. As to Pet's American career declining, that was because her husband failed to pay taxes in the USA, and she had to shift her career to Europe prdominantly.

The lyrics are really happy but the melody sounds so sad.
