Church, The - Destination Lyrics

Our instruments have no way of measuring this feeling
Can never cut below the floor or penetrate the ceiling
In the space between our houses some bones have been discovered
But our procession lurches on as if we have recovered

Draconian winter unforetold
One solar day, suddenly you're old
Your little envelope just makes me feel cold
Makes destination start to unfold

Our documents are useless, or forged beyond believing
Page forty-seven is unsigned, I need it by this evening
In the space between our cities, a storm is slowly forming
Something eating up our days, I feed it every morning
Destination, destination

It's not a religion, it's just a technique
It's just a way of making you speak
(When) distance and speed have left us too weak
And destination looks kind of bleak

Our elements are burned out, our beasts have been mistreated
I tell you it's the only way we'll get this road completed
In the space between our bodies the air has grown small fingers
Just one caress, you're powerless, like all those clapped-out swingers
Destination, destination

Your record player sounds fast to me. But our feelings have no way of measuring these instruments.

    G.... B....

Apart from with a clock, for instance.

  7. M.... K....

It's the most beautiful song in the world! I love it so much! ❤

  8. A.... B....

1988... Ft Dix NJ. Sitting back and pondering....

  9. D.... D....

I am 52 now and still think they are great !

  10. G.... F....

Saw them live at the Haunt in Ithaca,NY April 13th, 2019

30th anniversary of the Starfish album tour.

I actually cried in silence when they started with this song first.

The whole show was amazing and the emotions and memories of my life back in ‘89 (in the Navy, got sober, started whole new life after discharge in ‘90), one of the top albums in that period in my life.

Show was totally worth it and recommend it with the VIP package meet and greet. The whole lot of them are a great bunch of guys, even the lady selling the merch!

  11. A.... ....

Heard this live it was amazing

  12. M.... ....

    Mesmerising.

  13. s.... K....

I heard this in 1988 on WFNX near Boston. I ran out and bought the tape. The rest is history. Clearly this is the deepest band I can relate too.

  14. T.... D....

Going to see them play this album on Saturday and just realised I haven't listened to it for years. Lyrics to Destination have always lingered in my head though. It's like Station to Station. 'It's not a religion, it's just a technique.' Phenomenal!

  15. J.... F....

    Roll the windows down
    Turn off the air conditioning
Turn up the volume as loud as it will go
    Pure Bliss
Now put the pedal to the metal.

  16. M.... A....

  20. K.... W....

    Love youguys

  21. c.... d....

This album has stayed with me since I was 17. And it affects me as profoundly now as it did then. Music is powerful and timeless. It’s the dialogue between people who don’t share a language.

  22. c.... d....

This might be the best album ever recorded.

  23. A.... ....

Most ALL 80s-90s music is ahead of its time

  24. L.... 1....

    yep🍻🍻🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

  25. R.... V....

  30. a.... g....

    first: amazing album.
second: "distance and speed have left us too weak..."
absolutely brilliant poetry... prophetic. this song... wow.
i guess kilby saw it coming...

    a.... g....

Kilbey, what a great poet he is

  31. P.... C....

The greatest band ever. Memories are made of this.

  32. R.... D....

    great song

  33. S.... A....

Picked up the album for Milky Way, but this quickly became my favorite track. Just a stellar song.

  34. Z.... T....

The whole  world crawled up steve's ass when he was a junkie and had to kick. Not good for a junkie ego when de NIle has set sail. I wonder what that felt like...so surreal...

  35. C.... C....

One of the best road trip albums ever. Miles out the window moving in sequence to the songs.

  36. M.... M....

radiohead owes these guys a huge debt.....

    M.... M....

    So does 'Flesh For Lulu'

    M.... M....

    What is Radiohead ?

    M.... M....

    @Arne Nilsen a band

    M.... M....

@Vintage Cassettes But their Music are not similare. Offcourse all bands are inspired by something

  37. M.... K....

    the last great Church album

    M.... K....

Not true. This is a great album But 2014's Further/Deeper is only bested by Priest = Aura

    M.... K....

I respectfully disagree. "Priest = Aura," "Hologram of Baal," and "Further/Deeper" were all great post-"Starfish" albums.

    M.... K....

Late reply; for me the last decent Church album = Gold Afternoon Fix-bar songs Ripple, Film & Mistress to a degree, Priest = Aura = no ....
    Reply

  38. s.... ....

  41. k.... P....

One week away from seeing them in New Hampshire.

  42. T.... M....

thanks for posting all the Church stuff

  43. t.... ....

the poem in the liner notes was amazing: "Good, now and forever... "

  44. P.... O....

From an adolescence of promise to a middle age completely disillusioned and empty, the Church has been with me the entire road.  I am disturbed by what my life would have been without them.  They have made this all more bearable.  The hint of something.....more.  Maybe something beyond the pale.  Connectivity, transcendence, meaning and hope.

    P.... O....

Zaphod Trillian...with a name like Zaphod Trillian I can only assume you are a Douglas Adams fan.....

    P.... O....

Well expressed. Many bands do not wear well through time. These guys do.

    P.... O....

    That was beautiful

    P.... O....

Without the Church I would feel very little desire to want to learn more

    P.... O....

@Pat ODonnell You must have mastered the art of self defense, you just laid that shit troll to rest.

  45. S.... C....

"Our beast have been mistreated" dont let peta hear you say that lol
This song is tip top notch A-1. One of the Churchs greats!

    S.... C....

    Fucking AWESOME LYRICS

  46. L.... ....

Fine band ,loved them since Blurred crusade.

  47. m.... d....

Tonight At Westbury Theater. Along with the Furs!

    m.... d....

maximvs degeneratvs Wow! That would have destroyed me nostalgically speaking, just saw the Church by themselves last month, I teared up at the beginning, 30 years is a long time!

  48. T.... ....

is that a tiger growl in the song? so cool.

  49. A.... P....

How true . . . My "documents here are useless." Who did I think I was fooling and what was I trying to prove?

My "elements are burnt out." Again, all too true . . . And learned after all the damage was done.

(I should pay the Church a fee for counseling and therapy . . . And the music is divine.)

    A.... P....

Agnes Philomena thanks for be so special

  50. D.... H....

Personal fave for the last 25 yrs...

  51. H.... W....

AUSTRALIAS HIDDEN CLASSIC APART FROM INXS MIDNIGHT OIL THE EUROGLIDERS THE MODELS.

    H.... W....

    You forgot about "Icehouse"

    H.... W....

    Formerly The Flowers -great stuff!

  52. .... ....

    These guys are AMAZING!!!

    .... ....

@***** If they had gotten what they deserved for their art, they would own Las Vegas. But the things they had to say were true but too unsettling. The next-to-the-last verse in this song sounds like prophecy now.

    .... ....

@***** Why does that piss you off? They are a great band that had just one "hit" (if you can even call it that) here in the States. Most folks either never heard of them or have forgotten them...that's basically the definition of underrated....something or someone who is awesome at what they do but don't get proper recognition.

    .... ....

@Mac888 spectral You obviously, have no idea what u r talking about. next time maybe, look into something, so you wont look like a complete idiot

    .... ....

@jakeworld In regards to what? That they had only one commercial hit in the U.S. (Under The Milky Way) and ARE underrated? I stated a fact and followed it up with an opinion. It is also true that most people in this country are not familiar with their music. Don't you have anything else to get angry about?

  53. A.... G....

    how beautiful that e-bow sounds!

  54. r.... ....

    two words: "fuuuuuuuckkkkk yeahhhhhh"

  55. C.... ....

Some of the guitar parts kinda sound like the ending to Pretty Girls Make Graves....

  56. G.... G....

This album helped me fail out of Coastal Carolina in 1988!! Lol

  57. M.... F....

I see other Floyd comments on here.  Being a huge Floyd fan I couldn't agree more.  Very late Floyd/Waters sounding.  Made me go buy the LP and CD.

  58. B.... R....

Our instruments have no way of measuring this feeling.....great lyrics !!!!!!!!!!

    B.... R....

You bet your ass those are good lyrics lot better then anything Miley Cyrus have somebody write for her

    B.... R....

    Indeed!! The Church rules forever!

  59. S.... A....

    there peak

  60. w.... ....

    Oh, don't ruin it.

  61. F.... ....

have been after this album for soooo long....awesome!!

  62. A.... P....

Keep movin. It's gettin dicey. Ain't goin down without a fight. We're gonna get there.

  63. M.... S....

    THATS WHAT SHE SAID! :)

  64. F.... C....

This doesn't sound exactly like Pink Floyd, but it conveys the same atmosphere as a Pink Floyd song, and Steve Kilbey's voice reminds me a little bit of David Gilmour's for some reason. I really wish these guys were as big in the States as they were in Australia. They were really one of
the best groups of the 80s and 90s. Priest=Aura and Heyday are two of my favorite albums, along with Starfish.

  65. A.... P....

Happiness in this world is not the endgame. Strap in . . . For . . . The final destination. No one here gets out alive.

  66. 1.... ....

Good, though. I bought this album in 1988.

  67. 1.... ....

    Nothing like Pink Floyd!

    1.... ....

    1990 good!

  68. k.... j....

I wish I was rich and beautiful!

  69. D.... T....

So many songs, always quality. If have to pick one, and only one, I guess I would pick this.

  70. M.... B....

Listen to "Dulcesky", the songs called "I Dreamt Of You" and "Always".

  71. A.... P....

The nightingale and whippoorwill sing at midnight

"Page 47 is unsigned, I need it by this evening . . ."

    "A force beyond believing"

"In the space between our cities, a storm is slowly formin"

    "Our elements are burnt out"

    "Our beasts have been mistreated"

    . . . .Onward to Golgotha

  72. A.... P....

    "Draconian wind unforetold"

"In the space between our houses some bones have been discovered"

"There's something eating up our days, I feel it every morning."

    "It's not a religion, it's just a technique."

"its just a way of a making you speak."

"Distance and speed are making you weak.

    "Destination looks pretty bleak."

. . . .and the death march continues.

  73. A.... P....

"And our procession lurches on as if we have recovered" . . . . Said I the walking dead

  74. i.... ....

So funny: on the tour for this album, after the Church were done, all the jocks would be leaving the venue and all the deathrockers/ goths and punk would be marching in to see Peter Murphy.

  75. J.... A....

    "our documents are useless..."

  76. G.... ....

    LMAO!!!!!!!....me too!!!!!!!!!!!!

  77. A.... G....

Damn i had this album and now i think i lost it!

  78. N.... I....

Very dark and gloomy song. Not bad!

  79. A.... H....

LOVES so much. The first time I heard this album was in 89 when I was thirteen years old. I instantly fell in love. What an amazing song to put at the beginning of an album. In some ways this album has saved my life, created magic, made parts of my youth even more intense, calmed my senses and helps me remember faces of people that were ingrained in some of these songs that are now gone. This my read as sappy and silly but it is so true for me. Thanks for posting!

    A.... H....

Atomic Hive I totally understand what you mean and I feel exactly the same way.

  80. w.... ....

Love the little feedback fills in this

  81. R.... B....

  87. h.... ....

Starfish is the greatest post nuvo bullshillt album and we all know about the singles. I just say, listen to the whole album as it gives to the very end. The Droog.

  88. R.... ....

Actually called "Under The Milky Way" without the tonight, thats just in the lyrics. and yes, they are underrated, like the connells, there is the one song on the radio with the others also amazing or if not better. Love this band!

  89. M.... R....

    Vastly superior to Pink Floyd.

  90. t.... ....

Sounds almost like a post-Waters Floyd with some David Bowie undertones.

  91. C.... ....

I'm here because of that article too. Now, I've always liked "Under the Milky Way Tonight" but I was always too lazy to check out their other work and now i have no regrets in doing so. The Church is truly an underrated band.

  92. v.... ....

    It's spelt "Cracked" ;)

  93. r.... ....

    Thanks Gladstone =)

  94. n.... ....

    same here
