Church, The - Columbus Lyrics

The king had something changed within him
I should have told him no
Oh Columbus, I never should have let you go
Now aching wires, midnight fires
Things I could not know
Oh Columbus, I never should have let you go

You don't suppose there'd be room in here somewhere for me
I think I just need someone's words to reassure me
I don't blame any of you
And I don't blame myself

Waiting for my small reward
It's going to come somehow
Oh Columbus, I wish that you could see us now
We don't possess a single empty tear or furrowed brow
Oh Columbus, I wish that you could see us now

You don't suppose there'd be room in here somewhere for me
I think I just need someone's words to reassure me
I can't change any of you
I can't change myself

The man had something strange about him
He should have let me know
Oh Columbus, I wish I'd never let you go

Columbus

  1. G.... N....

Columbus, una canción de mis favoritas, me encanta la voz de Steve, THE CHURCH por siempre.

  2. T.... ....

The Church. Gather children and be mesmerized and hypnotized.

  3. K.... ....

Why isn't this the official song of Columbus day???

  4. P.... ....

Oh how I loved watching 120 Minutes on Sunday nights!

  5. P.... R....

    Siempre Bella, inolvidable

  6. d.... ....

Still my favorite album by The Church

  7. H.... ....

Rush, The Church, Type O negative, Til Tuesday (Aimee Mann), all top 10 of my life shared bass player lead singer, Classic in this Day,

  8. S.... S....

  10. T.... P....

    Fantastic!!!!

  11. B.... ....

    Sheet music anyone?

  12. C.... B....

    yes. no Columbus. no tears.

  13. D.... M....

every song on Heyday is amazing. But my most favorite one is Night Of Light. Then Myrrh comes second and Columbus comes third

  14. S.... A....

I guess i just need someone's words to reassure me...

  15. A.... F....

    Good!!!

  16. D.... E....

    Such a distinctive 80's sound....love it still

  17. H.... A....

Still love this song some 30 years later. My sister was an alternative radio DJ and played it all the time.

    H.... A....

Same here & I played it all the time as well.

  18. c.... ....

This and Myrrh, best ever songs, off one of the best Aussie albums EVER

    c.... ....

Under rated in the states maybe, but im pretty sure theyre one of Australias most cherished bands.

    c.... ....

This whole album rocks. I like Myrhh and Roman the best.

  19. G.... H....

A bonafide classic. The entire album, in fact.

    G.... H....

+J Oliver Hazley Heyday is one of the best Australian albums. The End.

    G.... H....

I concur- what a sonic masterpiece.

    G.... H....

My wife and I had this on a tape when we were first married and it stayed in the car for a long time. I know this album back to back and 20+ years married the songs still sound amazing. So's my missus, actually!

  20. N.... ....

+Chris Johnson Very true, though I don't exactly see how your comment reflects on mine. Far as I'm aware the Vikings penetrated, some say, to Minnesota, while Colombo stuck to the east coast.

  21. P.... M....

The greatest band to ever come out of Australia, and that includes the fabulous Hoodoo Gurus and the Easybeats!

    P.... M....

I was around in the 1980's and I think the Church and the Triffids were the best Australian bands around at the time ( I saw them all live) . Live wise I preferred the Triffids but record wise the Church.ps my fav Australian artist of all time is Lisa Gerrard who was of course in Dead Can Dance but has released some brilliant solo material (her voice is my fav live voice of all time)

    P.... M....

Give a listen to Midnight Oil, particularly 2 albums Blue Sky Mine and Diesel and Dust. There right up there with some of the best Genre's of all of Rock Music.

  22. M.... V....

Belíssima música. Que instrumental maravilhoso! Beautiful music. What a great instrumental!

  23. K.... B....

they released a great number of brilliant songs in the 1980's. This is  one of the best 5 or 6. My favs are Constant in opal, Antenna, Fields of mars , Electric lash, almost with you and Columbus

  24. m.... ....

cool video... amazing band... best lyricist...

  25. K.... ....

This by far the *best* song about Columbus and one of The Church's greatest historical commentary songs.

  26. h.... ....

I would love to see these guys again.

  27. N.... ....

OK, let's see if I get this... Queen Isabella has a really bad dream the night after the NINA, the PINTA and the SANTA MARIA take off, in which she sees all the horrible stuff the USA is going to do in the future and regrets giving Cristoforo Colombo the money to try to find India the hard way... but it's too late!  You're telling me it is.  Nice job, Churchmen.  From my favorite Church release of all time.

    N.... ....

I love The Church and their witty commentaries on history. But if king Fernando and Queen Isabela had denied Columbus permission, it is highly likely someone else from Spain would have gone to the Americas....Or perhaps a portuguese man would've gone.

    N.... ....

+Nastyoff come on, Vikings were here way before

    N.... ....

Wasn't saying they didn't, Chris Johnson.  In fact there appears to be some evidence they got as far west as Minnesota...

  28. m.... a....

what a song, what a band!

  29. d.... ....

Awwww Marty is so cute... :-D

  30. N.... ....

@BrutusMcCrunch Without a doubt mate and Heyday is a timeless masterpiece.

  31. d.... ....

This was the first song I ever heard by them, on a mix tape in 1986. I immediately went out and got the "Heyday" album and they've been one of my favorite bands ever since...and they continue to make good music today, after all these years.

  32. G.... H....

Possibly the most underrated band of the past 30 years

  33. P.... H....

@simionTheOne Xymox was good, but jeez, the number of awesome alternative 80's and 90's bands is endless. Depeche Mode of course, but also bands like Lush, The Charlatans, The Stone Roses, Catherine Wheel, Jesus & Mary Chain, the list goes on and on.

    P.... H....

Creativity during this time period was as good as late 1960's to early 1970's. Sadly, we will never experience this again.

  34. B.... ....

It remembers me year 1987 when I went for a trip to the united state! I bought two albums on tape in Washington DC ("Heyday" from the Church and "That total Age" from Nitzer Ebb) and I drove from Washington DC to Miami-Florida with only these two tapes to listen to! Should I say that The Church were more "listen-able" for such a long trip! arf arf arf!

  35. V.... F....

The lyrics and layers of sound, like on MANY church songs are none par with any but their own songs..They rule..

  36. F.... k....

Que canción más bonita. Viva The Church.

  37. c.... ....

    I love this song.

  38. N.... B....

What can I say - one of the most underrated bands of the 80's and certainly the best Aussie export. This is a flawless song in every way.

  39. t.... ....

In D.C. there used to be a good independent radio station, WHFS, that used to play lots of underground stuff. I remember many times hearing the Church.
The 1980's version of that station is long gone, but well remembered. That is where I first heard the Church Early in 1986 about two months before they opened for Echo and the Bunnymen.

  40. N.... ....

One of the greatest song never heard. It's unforgiveable to me that the Church struggle to even profit from touring these days. I wanna see a 87 year old Kilbey plucking that magical thumping bass line to Myrrh while (a hopefully beardless) Marty abuses his Rickenbacker and Peter...well what can you say about Peter? The guys just really doesn't seem to age and plays so beautifully and effortlessly. Oh and Tim! Thank you so much for resurrecting my favourite band of all time :-)

  41. m.... ....

    Beautiful song!!!!

  42. a.... ....

The Church, The Chameleons, Echo-- top 3 for sure.

  43. N.... ....

I found out about these guys from Allmusic Guide because I'm a big Bunnymen and Chameleons fan. luckily we have 2 independent record stores in town that stock alot of Church stuff and ended up buying most of it! in a way its good they're not so popular, music like this should be considered a treasure not to bue spoiled on mainstream radio

  44. c.... m....

this album, "heyday", is a pure melodic masterpiece...i've always been a big church fan...i would've liked the album to be a lil' less slick/production...but it still holds up & has relevancy as a whole...they went on to do other accomplished material...
    how great's the re-occuring lyric..."you don't suppose there...be room in here...somewhere for me...i think i just need...someone's words to...reassure me"...classic...
steve has a lyrical moment like that on almost every album...great band...!

  45. 1.... ....

Always a pleasure to come back to this song.

  46. j.... ....

really, with "respect and conservation"? did they bury their feces after a bowel movement? (thats not a rhetorical question). i dont think they lived in their environment with "respect". they just lived as best as they could, with what they had.

  47. e.... ....

If Columbus did stay in Spain there would be no "we" here. How would anyone know what the Native Americans would continue to be like had Columbus not come here? Yes, they may have warred with each other, but at least they knew how to live in their environment, with respect and conservation. Now all we have are Wal-Mart and K-mart and mini-marts....

  48. j.... ....

haha...interesting point. but what kind of problems would we have if he DID stay there? i mean, the natives warred with each other. contact did cause them great pain, and extinction of some tribes, but in a cruel way, it may have been worse had the spanish not settled - ok! ok! CONQUERED. :)

  49. j.... ....

i feel you, kieran. its a miracle i know of them. thankfully, eons ago (well, c. 1987) we had a radio station that played "underground", or "alternative" stuff like this, the Smiths, Echo & the Bunnymen, etc. the station lasted ONE YEAR. anyway, WXXP (shout out-- anyone?) had "reptile" in rotation. without that, i may have missed "under the milky way's" small ripple and ultimately this band entirely. the thought sends shudders through me. please hold me....

  50. e.... ....

"Oh Columbus, I never should have let you go"

Really...too bad Columbus did go...Not to get too political here, but...ahem...we probably wouldn't have the problem we do now in the world had Columbus just stayed in Spain.

  51. m.... ....

Great band, great album, great song....awesome!

  52. B.... ....

Yeah, I am a metalhead that also likes these guys too. But back then, I was taking LSD and listening to them and the Dead. Fun times.

  53. s.... ....

I'm firstly a total metalhead, but I've always loved this band. I bought Heydey on cassette when it came out, and it still holds up to this day. My favorite song from the album! Thanks

  54. t.... ....

I couldn't agree with you more. Heydey is one of my Top 5 all-time albums. I saw 'em in '85 when the opened for Echo and the Bunnymen at the State Theater in Detroit. They were touring in support of Heyday. So damn good! I just listened to this album on my way to work this morning--I hadn't heard it in a few years. I actually wept during some parts. Silly, I know. But true.... :)

  55. n.... ....

I saw this video up in alaska in 1986, BOMB SHELTER videos hosted by Bill Bored its been 20 yrs for me 2. thank you for posting it

  56. j.... j....

epic song ! awesome the church!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. c.... ....

THX, Steve for posting this. The Church was the 1980s, to me.

  58. c.... ....

Saw them at the Moonshadow (no longer there) in ATL on the HeyDay tour. Great band.

  59. C.... ....

My soundtrack of the 80s! it is difficul to overestimate the impact of the HeyDay album on my life. its over 20 years since i heard this song first time but it still holds a magical spell over me. thanks a million for this steve! are you THE steve?
