Chumbawamba - The Diggers Song Lyrics

You noble diggers all stand up now, stand up now
You noble diggers all stand up now
The wasteland to maintain seeing cavaliers by name
Your digging does maintain and persons all defame
Stand up now, stand up now

Your houses they pull down stand up now, stand up now
Your houses they pull down, stand up now
Your houses they pull down to fright your men in town
But the gentry must come down and the poor shall wear the crown
Stand up now, diggers all

With spades and hoes and plows stand up now, stand up now
With spades and hoes and plows, stand up now
Your freedom to uphold seeing cavaliers are bold
To kill you if they could and rights from you to hold
Stand up now, diggers all

The gentry are all round stand up now, stand up now
The gentry are all round stand up now
The gentry are all round on each side they are found
Their wisdom's so profound to cheat us of our ground
Stand up now stand up now

The lawyers they conjoin stand up now stand up now
The lawyers they conjoin stand up now
To arrest you they advise, such fury they devise, the devil in them lies
And hath blinded both their eyes
Stand up now, stand up now

The clergy they come in stand up now, stand up now
The clergy they come in stand up now
The clergy they come in and say it is a sin
That we should now begin our freedom for to win
Stand up now diggers all

'Gainst lawyers and 'gainst priests stand up now stand up now
'Gainst lawyers and 'gainst priests stand up now
For tyrants they are both, even flat against their oath
To grant us they are loathe free meat and drink and cloth
Stand up now diggers all

The club is all their law, stand up now stand up now
The club is all their law, stand up now
The club is all their law, to keep all men in awe
That they no vision saw to maintain such a law
Stand up now diggers all

    Crazy commie clown

I think this song came first

    Simon Cook

Ye Jacobites by name is a Rabbie burns song.

    Plat Jackson

@Simon Cook chumbawumba didn't rip off anyone, they didn't write the song. a lot of old folk songs like this one use an existing melody, so the two songs just happen to share the same tune.

What is the connection between this song and Ye Jacobites by name?

    risvegliato

yes its the same tune, called 'Captain Kidd' I think. It seems to have been much used over the years especially for protest songs. Also adapted for the hymn tune 'Wondrous Love'. Its a very powerful simple melody.

    x y z

Jacobites were CATHOLIC beholden to the POPE and VATICAN! there is NO CONNECTION. just because tunes are similar or have been around for long time doesnt mean the words are related.

    x y z

Jacobites were catholic DIGGERS were NOT.

A true Working Class song! Fuck the corrupt nobility that enslave and bleed dry the nation! Fuck the Royals, fuck the Tories, long live the Worker!

  28. TheShadowOfMars

TIL "cloth" rhymed with "oath" in 15th century English.

    Viktor Kardell

YOu find a lot of weird rhymes that used to work when reading/listening to old poetry.

    "Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
    In the forests of the night;
    What immortal hand or eye,
    Could frame thy fearful symmetry?"

'Eye' and 'symmetry' should NOT rhyme, and yet they did in the 18th century.

    Alex von Seggern

Actually, that's one of the main ways we figure out how old languages and dialects were pronounced: by looking at rhymes. That's part of how we learned what ancient Latin sounded like.

    Riagán Mac an Bhaird

A lot of Shakespeare is like that too. From Sonnet 116:
"If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved. "

    MajorHorrigan

I know it is super late to comment on this but what you talking about in this instance is a so called "eye rhyme" were despite a similar appearance the words do NOT actually sound alike.

It is sometimes used for additional emphasis and considering the rhymed word is "symmetry" there seems to be rather deliberate play with the dichotomy of using that word at the exact place the poem doesnt rhyme here.

    Alan Horton

    Also "bold" and "could."

I'm a Yankee and i love this song.

    Andrew Woodman

+Daniel Coe As a fellow Yank myself, I knew very little about the Diggers' Revolt before I heard this song and it spoke my language. We are still held up by similar rulers just under different names and banners, to have it be stated by peasants a few hundred years ago states that their struggle is our struggle.

    Opinunate ted

    +Daniel Coe Me too.

    Tom Conroy

The whole point of Folk music is that it has the same resonance on the instruments of today as on the instruments of when it was written. It is just a pity that it is not just the music that has same resonance, it is also the message of struggle that seems ro stay much the same as well,

  34. Community ARK Project

....Gathering people who wants to be a part of building a network of stable, fully self sustaining and self sufficient communities (a.k.a. life-boats for the coming environmental collapse). Peaceful communities that are built upon foundation of : love, spirituality, mercy, generosity, tolerance, intelligent, and wisdom. If you are interested in becoming a part of this grass root efforts, We encourage your reply.

This Community ARK Project is looking for peaceful, patience, humble, and kind-hearted people who are awaken and aware of the coming environmental collapse; who want to roll up their sleeves and participate in preparatory efforts. One cannot pull someone out of a raging river standing on a muddy slippery slope. In order to pull someone out of the river, one must stand on a firm solid foundation. A fully self-sufficient community is that solid foundation, upon which we stand in order to rescue other less fortunate who will be affected by the collapsing environment. If people are struggling to survive as the environment collapses, how can they help others? People need fully self-sufficient communities to shelter and nourish them, in order for them to reach out and help others.

We are gathering people from all spectrum of professional background: engineers, scientists, architects, biologists, farmers, doctors, nurses, artists, etc. Both skilled and unskilled people. Those with knowledge will teach those who lack them. Those not in the know will listen and learn so they might in turn teach others in the community. We have spent 6 years researching technology that were designed to allow Mars colonies to thrive in a desolate environment. We are now planning on using those very same technology to prepare people for the coming environmental collapse. If you are interested in helping out, we could use the help to reach the ears of people who are awaken through social media, or you can read our blog titled "Generalized Plan of Actions" for a list of tasks you can volunteer for.

(Note: this is a gathering process and NOT a recruitment process. When one recruit, one is trying to convince others to join a cause; well, someone else can always come along and convince people to join a different cause. But when one gather, one is speaking to those of like mind who do not need convincing; in their hearts and in their thoughts, they recognize the catastrophe that lay ahead if our modern societies continue on their current path of promoting competition, strife, ignorance and scarcity. This Community ARK Project is lighting a beacon so that those with similar mind set will know that they are not alone in their thoughts and impulses; that there are others like them out there who desire to come together to pool our effort in order to EXTRACT ourselves and place ourselves on a different path. One that promote cooperation, harmony, foresight, and a nurturing environment.)

    Suilven Mountain

+Community ARK Project Not my thing but good luck to all of you. Long may we live in a free country

Good to see Utopian Socialism is alive and well.....

  35. Opinunate ted

Of course they were neither capitalist nor communists nor socialists in the modern sense, for such words and ideologies were not yet coined.  But nor were they English nationalists or racialists.  Clearly this is about class war, as it took place in pre-industrial feudal societies.  But yes, there is stuff here to inspire modern folk who love freedom.

    Jeremy Reagan

    +Ethan Davidson
I am a Anarchist myself, and can relate it is thought to have formulated with men like Godwin but, in truth it comes from ancient Greece. Anarchism is Greek for ''Without Rulers''. The Diggers are more Communistic then Anarchist in that top down power structure was still appealed with them.

One of Anarchist thought in 15th Century Prauge is Peter Chelickicky and his The Net of Faith. I have this work German. One author to aid you in our history is Rudolf Rocker and his book Anarchism.

billy bragg has one same tune the thatcherites

    Allisa Bennett

Not at all the same tune and Billy Bragg sang Leon Rosselson's song, "The World Turned Upside Down" on the same theme which Rosselson was inspired to write after having read Christopher Hill's book about the English revolution. https://youtu.be/YwQwA_kFxoE

    Bob McGahey

it  really is the same tune the melody varies slightly but the harmonics are the same--loved Hill's book :)

    Viktor Kardell

That song is written to the tune of the classical Scottish folk song "Ye Jacobites by name", written by Robert Burns. While the tunes are somewhat similar, they are certainly not the same.

  50. Dagger1955

@LexMan89 You can do that but it just proves my point. Oh, by the way, I've been a hard working member of your so called proletariet for 40 years now (coal mining and trucking). My Dad (he was a butcher at a meat packing plant) taught me two important concepts: 1. The world doesn't owe you a living and 2. Life isn't fair...get over it. As the old country song says "if I didn't earn it, I don't want it". It's the way real Americans think. OK now socialist parrot...give it your best shot.

  51. LexMan89

    @Dagger1955
Do you have any original thoughts of your own capitalist. Stealing from those who let you; typical capitalist. Blaming and greedy.

I can throw your own words back at you all day long if you want.

  52. Dagger1955

@LexMan89 Do you have any original thoughts of your own marxist. Stealing from those who can; typical socialist. Lazy and needy.

    Samuel Slattery

Before the lefties got all their workplace laws, unions, wage laws, healthcare, etc, coal miners used to be treated like slaves, kept in perpetual debt, forced to live in company towns in abysmal conditions and then dropped like a stone to die the moment they got old or injured. If you had to live in an actual laissez faire capitalist workplace you wouldn't have been able to afford a computer to type this on because those places were nightmares that haven't existed in the developed world for a century. And the only reason that changed is because a bunch of socialists, trade unionists and progressives rioted and struck and died. You probably would have told a slave on a plantation that the world isn't fair and doesn't owe him a living and that he should get back to picking cotton. And back in the laissez faire days there wasn't a shred of difference between a coal miner and a slave.

  53. LexMan89

Capitalists are people who are too greedy to share with the rest and expect to pay them for less than they're worth. It's a form of thievery plain and simple. Cry all you want, it is what it is.

    Tremuoso

This estrogen filled schmuck says as he is too afraid to go and live in a communist. Why don't you go, you low IQ twit?

These people were not communists, they where not capitalists, how dare you insult my ancestors by labeling them as such!!! They believed their wealth was belonging to their race, you would call them racists. They do not believe what you believe, they wanted war not peace!!!
