Chumbawamba - That's How Grateful We Are Lyrics

OK, this one's called "Whitewash"
When was the very first time you saw Chumbawamba?
In my dreams!
Ha!
Working in a forge, black lungs, burnt skin
Callouses, arched back, hammering, hammering
Stalin watching over us pigeon shit head
We'd spit on the floor at this red bastard god
That's how grateful we are
[Repeat]
Bronze statue, pink marble, built to last
We brought him to his knees in a single night
And the boots that remained I attacked, I attacked
Hammering, hammering, the past is past
That's how grateful we are
[Repeat]
Scrub away, scrub away
And the noise rang out, metal on metal
Pigeons flit, dust settled
Out from the shadows we took to the streets
David chopping at the giant's feet
That's how grateful we are
[Repeat]
OK, we're gonna take it right, right, right, right down, way down
What we need is a break from the old routine
[Repeat]
Can I kick it? Yes you can!
[Repeat]
There ain't no justice, just us
[Repeat]
OK, we've been doing this one quite a few nights running, but I'd like to take that one. Is that a yes? Which one, then?
Goodbye girl, goodbye girl...
Martin McLaren, Archer, Anais Nin...
Well, basically, Chumbawamba are the sort of metals of the pop world
The old groups, they're not concerned with what there is to be learned
They sell 501s and they think it's funny, turning rebellion into money
Can I kick it?
This songs become a bit irrelevant now, innit, we may as well just go off now. Couple of yous could just get up and we'll just fuck off. I'm into that man, you know, 'cause I've got a hot chocolate waiting for me back there. There's, uh, quite a bit of anti-Criminal Justice Bill sentiment down in front here. Excellent!
What we need is a break from the old routine
[Repeat]
You still want to come? Too late, too late
We're cut and we're fallen like harvested wheat
But we lived on our feet, at least, at last
And we will live on our feet, at least, at last
That's how grateful we are
[Repeat]
You still want to come? Too late, too late
We're cut and we're fallen like harvested wheat
But we lived on our feet, at least, at last
We will live on our feet, at least, at last
That's how grateful we are
That's how grateful

As far as I know they never made a shitzer tune, including this, the 'hits'. & they all stand the test of time? Can someone name a bad track? A Band's Band, forget the so-callled The Band who purified hippy-shit-music.

This song is about the 'refugees' coming to Britain, taking our houses and benefits and then doing their best to destroy us.

I have loved Chumbawumba since a gig I saw them play in Finsbury park, prolly last century now, which is a scareythought in itself. I rember Alice taking the time to chat with me which blew my mind coz "Band folk never do that" unless you are a personal friend. Well as I get older and find myself becoming more radical in my views I can see the powerful influence this band's music and lyrics had upon me. These days I find myself questioning everything that the Establishment drip-feeds me.

Remember this when 30% of the voting electorate are represented by 5% of the Parliamentary seats there is something wrong with that version of democracy here's a graphic https://twitter.com/search?q=%23electoralreform&src=tyah .

I'd be pro the Anarchists except that I am too cynical to believe that merely tearing everything down would result in some sort of Utopia arising out of the ashes humanity is not that altruistic also who is going to take care of the sick, weak and elderly while the anarchy goes on? All you would get is what you have all across the Middle-East Chaos and Warlordery.

I better stop now or this little diatribe will turn into a full blown rant. Take care all you good folk.

+Epona TwoSpiritHorse I saw them at Finsbury park and got chatting to Alice Nutter after the gig too...maybe our paths crossed that day...

    E.... T....

+Emma Nail In which case let me give you a decade-and-a-bit late smile in your direction :) I rather love the fact that here we are all these years later saying hi after a perhaps chance path crossing so many years ago.

    E.... T....

The term "last century" can refer to any length of time between 1 second and 99 years, 364 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds ago.

You're right. That's really scary or something because, idk.. reasons? Sometimes, I'm like 'oh shit - yesterday was thursday but today it's not. scarythought.'

    E.... T....

I notice the better the band the more informed and intelligent the comment section tends to be.

    E.... T....

you know Chumbawumba but you don't understand anarchism. anarchy has everything to do with helping the disadvantage, the sick and the elderly, etc. Back in the day, helping people was a big part of what we did, it's what we organized around, it attracted more to our cause. Instead of picking up knowledge from songs try reading a few books. If the anarchist ever take over, the sick, elderly and indigent will be taken care of. That's the whole point

Brilliant live band, Fantastic band wish they had never done Tubthumping,

    m.... g....

That's all very well slagging off Tubthumping , but even anarchists have to eat, and they had a history of playing music for next to nowt

    m.... g....

@bryan seals But as you say, brilliant live band

    m.... g....

@bryan seals I have no problem with the music , or the success, it was that after years of greatness, they ended up remembered for one song, they are far more important than that.

    m.... g....

@mark goodyer But then, Mark, many people found their way to the good stuff through Tubthumping! I don't actually think Tubthumping is that bad a track, even if it is not really representative of their work; Top of the World is a far worse track, IMO.

    m.... g....

Great live band, one of the Funnest I've ever seen. Party with a purpose

  14. p.... ....

    commies&nazis-different name,same murder,same oppression,same shit.Fuck ya' all.

    p.... ....

+ Kile Onasi yes, because in practice, the communist rule - " dictatorship of proletariat" - inevitably leads into authoritarian rule and formation of a new elite - exactly the same thing that anarchists warned us about in communism. And what Orwell, completely disillusioned about the October revolution, described in the Animal farm and 1984.

    p.... ....

+ Kile Onasi communist ideals are non real, a complete illusion achievable only through brainwashing and use of force to create a "new human". l'm coming from a former commie ruled country, l know how it works.

    p.... ....

So all of communism = Marxist-Leninist interpretation of one bit of Marx/Engels writing that ancoms/non-Leninists typically do not support, without thinking that makes communism doomed to obsolescence? Was Revolutionary Catalonia doomed to "authoritarian rule and formation of a new elite"?

    p.... ....

So, Luxemburg is as bad as Stalin? What?

    p.... ....

The Dictatorship of the Proletariat is the inverse of the Dictatorship of the Bourgeoisie. This is the period before socialism/communism. Read the Critique of the Gotha Programme.

It's best you look at the term as a historical one, and not what it's used for today. It meant who ruled society at the current time, and so the idea was that the proletariat would rule the transitionary state of society until class is lost with the state withering away.

    https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1875/gotha/

The USSR had yet to establish a dictatorship of the proletariat. Read State and Revolution by Lenin, they established state-capitalism to develop capitalism as a mode of production to later formulate the basis for socialism.

  15. N.... B....

Whoever disliked this thinks he's Stalin..... Pigeon shit head!!

    N.... B....

I think whoever disliked this just wasn't paying attention to what this song is about, so I wouldn't read into it!

  16. n.... ....

Tubthumping wasn't their best work IMHO but the only reason it gets so much flak is that it was so overplayed...and turned the band into one-hit-wonders.

I think their best work is the recent acoustic/folk period.

  17. M.... H....

this is brilliant, but, so was tubthumping... don't forget that, an it all comes from exactly the same place...

  18. B.... S....

The early Chumbawamba stuff was brilliant (everything pre-Tubthumping ),I was lucky enough to see them 6 times between 1994 and 2004,their ad-lib version of this song at Huddersfield Polytechnic lasted about 10 or 12 minutes and was wonderful.....those were the days!!!!!!

    B.... S....

    Bobby Shaftoe I was there

  19. K.... ....

    Gimme some bass!

  20. m.... ....

such great song, sucha a great band... ♥

  21. T.... N....

    i love chumbawamba!
    thanks so much!
