Chumbawamba - Song On The Times Lyrics
You working men of England one moment now attend
While I unfold the treatment of the poor upon this land
For nowadays the factory lords have brought the labour low
And daily are contriving plans to prove our overthrow
They scorn the poor man as a thief in country and in town
There's different parts in Ireland, it's true what I do state
There's hundreds that are starving for they can't get food to eat
And if they go unto the rich to ask them for relief
They bang their door all in their face as if they were a thief
So arouse! You sons of freedom! The world seems upside down
They scorn the poor man as a thief in country and in town
And pay them off without remorse, quite scornful at their door
And if a man is out of work his Parish pay is small
Enough to starve himself and wife, his children and all
So arouse! You sons of freedom! The world seems upside down
They scorn the poor man as a thief in country and in town
So to conclude and finish these few verses I have made
I hope to see before it's long men for their labour paid
Then we'll rejoice with heart and voice and banish all our woes
Before we do old England must pay us what she owes
So arouse! You sons of freedom! The world seems upside down
They scorn the poor man as a thief in country and in town

So arise you sons of freedom the world seems upside down
The immigrants take all your jobs in country and in town.

Alas how altered are the times, rich men despise the poor
And pay them off without remorse, quite scornful at their door
And if a man is out of work his Parish pay is small
Enough to starve himself and wife, his children and all

Not sure I like the re-recorded version as much, but it's still a decent effort.
sons and daugther of freedom, rise up!
as we weld the new society, from the scarps of the old
You working men of England one moment now attend
while I unfold the treatment of the poor upon this land
for nowadays the EU has brought the labour low
and daily are contriving to plot our overthrow
arise you sons of freedom the world seems upside down
the immigrants take all our jobs in country and in town!
I do not demonise immigrants just the system of uncontrolled immigration. Shame on the shitlibs who let this happen!
(i) immigrants don't take "our jobs" because (a) they're not 'our' jobs, they don't belong to anyone, and (b) immigrants fill demand, not the other way around. They don't do jobs brits want to do, numerous studies have shown this. Take the jobs off immigrants and those jobs remain unfilled.
(ii) Liberals didn't cause this, the right wing did. Thatcher's greatest legacy was the single market and free movement, at her own admission.
The right wing's greatest achievement in british politics have been getting the working classes to support them in attacking the left, while they strip wages from the workers and line their own pockets.
The British left ensured that the EU ensures you have a guaranteed number of holidays per year, ensures that your work environments are safe and your families aren't dying of overpollution, etc. It ensures that countries pay due to the human rights act, which makes sure that we are all treated fairly. To take away that is to undo years of work by working class labourers to get those rights in the first place, and to put those rights in the hands of the bourgoise, who wish to works us all to death.
The bosses are the ones who set the wages, not the poor buggers who come here looking for a better life. Migrant working class people are not the enemy.

The Lyrics of every song brings back childhood memories and as democracy becomes true Democray povrty will be a thing of the past but neve forgotten.

Very relevant today please Chumbawamba return youve had a rest I know its a burden but look around who else, who else can do it like you.....
@Kripkenstein2 That's exactly what I was going to say to him lol. This is INFINITELY better than tubthumper, probably because these songs were alive in the hearts of men long before any of our time. All the singing is lame? Come on, this was the way that stories, tales and traditions have been passed down throughout our history! That dude needs to grow a pair, and grow a brain while he's at it.
you're an idiot
sorry... but all singin? uhhhh just a LLIIIIIIITTLE lame. didnt get the goosebumps goin like "get knocked down"
You know what gives me goosebumps? Watching you waste our air.
@wesmatron Right?
If I knew all those years ago, whilst bemoaning the over-playing of tub-thumping, that this band were such a great folk band I'd have listened more. I have some catching up to do.
i agree .i am only now hearing this now and i love it
Excellent!
