Chumbawamba - Coal Not Dole Lyrics

They stand so proud, the wheels so still
A ghost-like figure on the hill
It seems so strange there is no sound
Now there are no men underground
What will become of this pit yard?
Where men once trampled faces hard
So tired and weary their shift's done
Never having seen the sun
There'll always be a happy hour
For those with money, jobs and power
They'll never realise the hurt
They cause to men they treat like dirt
Will it become a sacred ground?
Foreign tourists gazing round
Asking if men once worked here
Way beneath this pit-head gear
Empty trucks once filled with coal
Lined up like men on the dole
Will they ever be used again?
Or left for scrap just like the men?
There'll always be a happy hour
For those with money, jobs and power
They'll never realise the hurt
They cause to men they treat like dirt

Never such athing, the women lied their arses off, when the pits shut, and I was a boy atching this, they all made timely excuses to jump ship, saw it load of times, the miners came from the darkness into a world of mostly silence apart from the kids like me, who knew my Dad was a warrior and fed, clothed etc..............the women, HA! Bullshit, just utter liars, they weren't there for the miners when there was no money.

I'm crying now. I remember Parsonage and Bickershaw (we used to call it plank Lane Pit) colliery . i remember Mee and Cocker scrap yard near the sportsman on Wigan Road. Livesleys grocers and the temperance bar in Leigh , was it called Sorrento's? Italian couple and all us kids used to pour in there every night and Mrs Sorrento used to keep a keen eye on us lol x

Tory scum. Fucked our country and blamed it on immigrants so they wouldn't have to clean up the messes they made of the lives and livelihoods of the people they oppressed.

This is Chumbawamba, by the way. Can't see that it says that anywhere. Yeah, them.

I remember they used to do this one in their live sets in the early 90s, at the time Heseltine had that massive round of pit closures.

Hi I am making a film trailer based around the 1984 mining strikes and I would just like to know more about the song and the possible use of it. Thank you

Sorry I took so long to reply but I have only just seen your comment. I found the song here on Youtube and merely put the photos together to match the poetry of the lyrics. I wish you well with your venture.

The poem's by Kay Sutcliffe, who fought tirelessly for the miners of Aylesham, Kent during the 1984-85 strike, and has been working her backside off for her community ever since.
