Chuck Wicks - Man Of The House Lyrics

6 A.M and Bobby's wakin' up
Rolls outta bed with sleepy eyes
Goes to his sister's room across the hall
"Hey Daisy rise and shine"
He pours two bowls full of Captain Crunch
Puts a fresh pot of coffee on
He wakes his momma up off the couch
"The bus is here, we love you mom"

He made the breakfast
He did the dishes
So she wouldn't have to

Oh he's only ten
Just comin' of age he oughta be out playin' ball
And video games
Climbin' trees
Or on a bike
Just ridin' around
But it's hard to be a kid
When you're the man of the house

It's late at night and Larry King is on
Momma's up on the couch again
Bobby hears them all talk about
That awful war his daddy's in
So he runs off, straight up to his room
Don't want his momma to see him right now
He climbs in bed and says a silent prayer
Then he cries his little blue eyes out
Don't wanna let her down

Oh he's only ten
Just comin' of age he oughta be out playin' ball
And video games
Climbin' trees
Or on a bike
Just ridin' around
But it's hard to be a kid
When you're the man of the house

It's finally Saturday
Bobby gets a phone call
Another world away from home
He says, "I love you dad"
Daddy says it right back
"Wish I could reach through this phone
And hug you, and Daisy, and your mom
I'm so proud of you son."

He's only ten
Just comin' of age he oughta to be out playin' ball
And video games
Climbin' trees
Or on a bike
Just ridin' around
But it's hard to be a kid
When you're the man of the house

It's 6 A.M and Bobby's wakin' up
Rolls outta bed with sleepy eyes

If you're reading this, and your husband is going away soon and you have a son, let me give you some advice. He will grow up fast, and he will feel he needs to be the man of the house. There's nothing you can do to stop that but reassure him that it will be okay, and that you're his mama, and you have him and will protect him and take over being the man of the house while dad's gone. It won't change him much if he's anything like me, or any other military son I've ever met, but that is the best advice I can give you. God bless your husband, and your family, and may he come home unscathed.

this is so sad and touching at the same time my dad was never in the war but this song was me at the age of ten when my dad was over seas on business trips I was man of the house my older brother was worthless so I grew up quickly helping with my cousin and helping mom around the house man I didn't realize I had to be a kid until I was fifteen and it was to late cause I had became dad to my nephew again my older brothers kid so yea although I had a good life parents that loved me I still missed out on being a kid but you know it was a choice I wouldn't change for anything in the world I now have two jobs that don't pay much and a eight year old boy who is my whole world so im pretty happy with life

    u.... ....

    Stop i'mma cry.

    u.... ....

My dad was in Afghanistan shortly after 9/11. Everyone used to say "you're the man of the house now" and my mom would get angry at them because she knew I had taken that burden already. And I did. My heart dropped when the door bell rang every time, and I'd get a knot in my stomach when the phone would ring. I remember laying in be and asking God to let me talk to my daddy, and then I'd talk to him like he was laying right next to me. Like you, I grew up way to fast, and by the time I knew I did I was in my mid teens and it was time to start becoming an adult, not by choice but but necessity. I'm glad you never had to worry if your dad was going to be shot and killed fighting for freedom, or getting a call from him and you can hear a fire fight going on in the background and rockets whizzing over his head. I'm so glad for you because thats not a burden I'd want any person to have to undertake, but I'd do what he had to do in a heartbeat, and I'd live through that again. It makes me furious when I hear people say the families don't serve, because we absolutely served.

  15. A.... S....

    Damn you Chuck...

  16. C.... W....

I'm a navy wife and have a son he's only a year and a half but thinks he's the man of the house when daddy isn't here. It's hard being away from him but it's his job. And we will always be here when he gets home.

  17. a.... f....

i am a military mom prior service and my husband is currently deployed. i don't think the song is talking about taking away his childhood by the words "so she shouldn't have to." my son is 11 and it actually makes him feel good to do things around the house. he loves to brag to his dad how he's taking care of mom and watching over things while he is gone. even though i cook, clean, do laundry about 3 times a day, etc. he likes to feel that he is helping take care of mom. he makes me proud.

  18. A.... P....

aww bless your son! Try to remind him that hes only a kid once! :)

  19. s.... ....

The son feels like he has to be the man guys. He has to take care of his little sister and mother because that's what daddy did. He's trying to be "the man of the house"

  20. K.... R....

"So she wouldn't have to" he's being nice and giving his mom a break

  21. A.... W....

i love this song. it tells me that im not the only that takes care of everyting. ive never had a dad. my mum is sick so its just me and my sisters doing everything we can so my mum doesnt have shes all we got and we dont wanna lose and last year she had to have surgery and we just bout lost her. it was scary but we made it through those hard times.

  22. k.... h....

kids are being kids they choose to help. im only thirteen and both my parents are gone a lot. they wake up an four a.m. and get home around 8. im the one who gets my brother and sister up make them breakfast go to school come home and clean the house. i be the adult so they dont have to be and they say that im kinda like there second mom. moms cant stop there kids from what they have there mind set on.

  23. L.... P....

I have this cd but Ive never seen the videos about it until now and I love it

  24. v.... ....

@cooper2907 you are right tell your dad thanks for his time and hope your holidays were as good as mine

  25. S.... A....

this song reminds me of my 11 yr old son.. his daddy calls him on saturdays.. he is fixing to be deployed and is away from us right now.. my son says he has to make sure we are ok until his daddy comes home.. have you ever tried to change the mind of a child that is dead set on trying to make his daddy proud??? its almost impossible.

    S.... A....

Shawna Austin it is. I was in your son's shoes at about 7. People would come up to us and talk to my mom and my dad would come up in the conversation and they'd look at me and say "you're the man of the house while your daddy is gone" and my mom would flip on them and tell them that it wasn't my job, and that they where just re enforcing what I already knew I had to be. It stole my child hood from me, but my dad went and fought, and I gave up my childhood so that other kids could have a childhood. I'm a 21 year old man now, and I'd do what my dad did in a heartbeat if the military would let me. And I wouldn't change the way anything happened. I remember laying in bed and asking God to let me talk to him and then I'd talk to him as if he was right there. We'd get phone calls and my mom would put me on the phone and it was my dad, getting shot at and having rockets fly over his head. I hope your husband, and his daddy came home okay, and I hope your son didn't grow up to fast, although I know he felt he didn't have a choice and that it was his job to protect you because that's how I felt.

  26. S.... B....

    this song fits me

  27. h.... ....

@cooper2907 Good job for stepping up. I bet your mom is proud of you even though she wanted you to have a childhood. Thank you for all things that you do to help your mom out!

  28. c.... ....

I'm a military child. My mom wanted us to have a childhood. But WE choosed to help around the house. So my mom wouldn't have to. My brother stepped up and was the man of the house because he wanted to. Not because he was told to. So for you to say "those mother", MY mother, needs to step up and be a mom. you dont know what, "us", kids think or why we do what we do. And dont waste your time trying to figure it out. You will NEVER understand what it is to be a military child!

  29. K.... P....

I think some of you people have it wrong, I don't think the mother is being a bad mom, and really that's not the point of the song. It says "he made the breakfast, he did the dishes so she wouldn't have to." not that she wouldn't. This is an amazing song, and I don't think we should be arguing over the mother.

  30. S.... D....

@Billswife104 but everyone has a respectability and hes being a very good child helping his mom and i know a lot of kids that do this rather there dad is home or not home

  31. S.... D....

@Billswife104 my Dad is in the military with 9 kids some times that happens and its hard to deal with it but still that's no reason to put down a song a bout a kid that's being the man of the house tell his dad returns

  32. N.... G....

    its really pretty

  33. v.... ....

i feel really sorry for all the army wifes and children, i hope that all our trops come home safe and sound miss you uncle hope you are ok xx

  34. J.... M....

i love this sad song!! it's not saying military wives are bad it's saying the little boy wants to help around the house. Depression when your husband is away (military, business, divorce or any other reason) can be really bad i've seen it...i'm sure he didn't mean any disrespect when he sang the song

  35. A.... D....

@lovemeans88 the song isn't about all military families. in this song the mom can't cope with her husband being gone & the kid has to take over. I don't think that it's a statement about all military familes, just one specific (albeit fictional) family.

  36. A.... M....

    I love this song

  37. M.... B....

The little boy is going to make a fabulour husband to a lucky girl one day

  38. J.... L....

Feel bad for the military kids but us military wives work hard too....and songs like this just go and make us feel like we are doing a bad job! Where are the songs for the families who are strong and hold things together for their spouses? And this doesnt just apply to soldier men there are sailors and airmen and of course women in the military too!

  39. M.... G....

@kalki76. I think this is a great song. Chuck is singing about how the is trying to help out. Cause he wants his dad to proud. The kid feels like he needs to be the man of the house cause his dad is overseas.

  40. k.... ....

as a military wife, this is the dumbest song I've ever heard. If you want to support the military Chuck Wicks, why don't you bring them a meal, or go over to help with yard work...please don't sing this ridiculous song.

  41. p.... ....

my couzin mike mobley wrote this i think he did a good job

  42. j.... b....

Im 16 and my life is alot like this.... love this song

  43. s.... ....

I love this song even I didn't catch its lyrics because I'm not a native English speaker but now I found why this song had attracted me. Isn't it interesting that sometimes songs attract you even you don't understand, catch their lyrics, but actually those songs are the ones that you have been waiting for?
I'm sorry for my bad English. But I hope people understand what I want to say..

  44. c.... s....

love this song made me break down and cry its funny cuase my life is the same

  45. s.... ....

This is the ony song I have ever listened to that made me break down completely. It's such a beautiful song and its one of very few that actually speaks to someone's heart

  46. J.... i....

its funny how alike this song is to my life for five years... and nowdays my friends ask me why i never smile and am silent all the time its hard to be 8 years old and have to go through that...

  47. k.... ....

    @kaylalynn2015

This is ALSO my FAVORITE Country Music Song by Chuck Wick's! How this AMAZING Country Music Song ONLY Peaked at #27 on the Country Music Charts TOTALLY baffles me! The ONLY reason I can think of that this Country Song ONLY Peaked at #27 is because they NEVER played it for ANYONE to know to request it. I ONLY heard this song on Country Radio one time & that was because they were doing the Sunday Weekly Countdown. All the GOOD Country Songs are played on Internet Country Radio.

  48. u.... ....

i love this song it reminds me of when i was 10 i had to be the man of the house because my dad was alway on busness trips and i didnt realize i had to be a kid until i was 16 years old and this song just really hits home for me but the thing that kep me going was when my dad would call and when he said i m so proud of you son .

  49. J.... ....

i love country music but we just moved out of range of my fave radio station. we were stopped at a gass station when we were moving and i heard this song and i freaked out cause it was a country song.turns out the station was satelite radio so it wasnt one i could get on my radio

  50. t.... ....

My mom was always sick when I was growing up, and dad was always at work, so I was stuck taking care of my mom, doing the laundry, sweeping, vacuuming, and all that stuff until my grandma came to take over until my dad came home, and that's how it was, since I was 5 til I was 12, so this song kinda hits me hard. I didn't have any younger sibs at the time, but now I do, 4 actually and I couldn't imagine having all that and younger sibs to look after. true, I was left alone w/ my sis before, but..

  51. L.... R....

    i love this song! <3
now i know who chuck is! he was on dancing with the stars!
i can't get this song out of my head!

  52. F.... ....

    Poor kid.

  53. D.... G....

there are alot of kids who have parents over there or even siblings. i love this song and i do cry everytime i hear it. its times now that im kinda glad i dont have a son that is trying to be the man of the house, b/c if i did he'd be in this same situation cuz of my boyfriend is going over to fight in the war. i do love this song.
