Chuck Berry - You Can't Catch Me Lyrics

I bought a brand new airmobile
It was custom made
It was a Flight DeVille
With a powerful motor
And some hideaway wings
Push in on the button and you will hear her sing
Now you can't catch me
Baby, you can't catch me
'Cause if you get too close
You know I'm gone like a cool breeze

New Jersey Turnpike in the wee wee hours
I was rolling slowly 'cause of drizzlin' showers
Here come a flattop, he was movin' up with me
Then come wavin' goodbye
In a little, old suped-up mini
I put my foot in my tank and I begin to roll
Moanin' sirens, 'twas the state patrol
So I let out my wings and then I blew my horn
Bye-bye New Jersey I become airborne

Now you can't catch me
Baby you can't catch me
'Cause if you get too close
You know I'm gone like a cool breeze

Flyin' with my baby last Saturday night
Wasn't a gray cloud floatin' in sight
Big full moon shinin' up above
Cuddle up honey, be my love
Sweetest little thing I ever seen
I'm gonna name you Mabelline
Flyin' on the beam set on flight control
Radio tuned to rock 'n' roll
Two, three hours a-passed us by
Altitude dropped to 505
Fuel consumption way too fast
Let's get on home before we run out of gas

Now you can't catch me
No baby, you can't catch me
'Cause if you get too close
You know I'm gone like a cool breeze

Chuck Berry You Can't Catch Me Comments
  1. D.... S....

Chuck Berry, no offense, but even he will admit that this Blues scheme Progression is sooooooo common and had been there before him as well. The differences in tempo, beat and lyrics and (MOST IMPORTANTLY) lyrical expression are highly significant. If Berry wanted to mess with guys, it had been millions.. haha, what a d*ck

  2. i.... ....

suppose to be the song lennon lifted for come together...I don t think its similar enough..but hey.

  3. T.... ....

John Lennon recorded this song and renamed it "Come Together". Lennon's version slowed down the tempo. Lennon was successfully sued over his plagiarism of this song, and Lennon settled out of court.

    T.... ....

It was ridiculous. What's the same? The chord progression? Oh My God! Let's go out and find all the songs with the same chord progression and sue! If it weren't for that one line in there, you wouldn't even know John Lennon was influenced at all by it. Similar to the equally ridiculous (and equally successful) lawsuit by the Hollies against Radiohead for Creep.

  4. T.... D....

    Here come old flat-top!!! ♥️

  5. N.... P....

    "A Man with a guitar who couldn't catch a girl with a car"😆. What a poetic intro.
Even death itself could only catch so much of you since you are still remembered even today.
RIP & give Maybelline my best.

Glad to get this never heard this one. The man was a great legend.

  10. H.... G....

I can see how it’s similar to come together but not the same, Id say its heavily inspired by it

    H.... G....

slow it down. .5x, you'll hear it.

    H.... G....

    even with similar lyrics?

  11. j.... b....

2'o7,il embrasse sa guitare comme très souvent

  12. R.... ....

Lennon had planned for Come Together to be at the same tempo as this song as an homage. Paul rearranged it to be swampy like it ended up. Likely saved John getting sued for his 'homage'.

  13. R.... A....

Pioner and father of rock & roll. RIP mister Chuck roll.

  14. A.... R....

I am making a school lecture of this man

  15. C.... N....

I became a fan when I saw Chuck perform this in a movie in the fifties. It's a story in just a few minutes. Delightful.

  20. M.... N....

    The Footwork

  21. D.... B....

Love the way he illustrates the story he's singing and playing. He's doing about 4 or 5 things at once here.

  22. J.... M....

Had Chuck Berry been white, he would have been hailed the King of Rock and Roll. He did it all, wrote classic songs with great lyrics, played lead guitar, as good as any one in the 50s, sang very good, and was a show man!

  23. d.... p....

    What a showman

  24. C.... N....

I was 12 when this came out and scared all our parents. Preachers predicted doom and locusts...

  25. s.... ....

    only one king,long live elvis

  26. A.... L....

Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley are the true KIngs of Rock and Roll.

    A.... L....

Elvis never thought of himself as the King and said so in concert to a woman that said it to him.. He said I'm not the king.. Jesus is

  27. B.... G....

Here's to the true King Of Rock N Roll. As usual the black artist is not given the credit. All the Rockers in the world owe it to you Mr Berry. You were a tall cool breeze and a great man. No one gives you credit for integrating audiences but you did. The really first time we all came together for the music. You had it all Sir talent courage and humor. Rock On!

  28. Z.... ....

    This guy! *___*

  29. J.... V....

his songs were so catchy, lol

  30. N.... F....

  35. D.... K....

Wow this performance have me smiling wow Mr Berry RIP

  36. R.... B....

A hundred years from now, Chuck will be remembered as one of the greatest American songwriters of his day.

    R.... B....

Chuck and Little Richards are modern Rock & Roll founders....

  37. M.... C....

¡Muy carismático Chuck! Y sobretodo con el Rock&Roll. ImI.

  38. H.... A....

oh boy , a stringless les paul ? tryin to keep up with elvis in the realm of stupid ? sad , he looks super cool , should had him do it live ... shame he will never get the credit he deserves

  39. S.... M....

Love John Lennon's version of this song on his Rock and Roll album.

  40. J.... S....

Except this case is that I actually playing the guitar or singing. He’s lip-synching because he has no microphone and air guitar not plugged in

    J.... S....

I don't think he even took a guitar to this appearance. At that time he was playing a Kay or a Gibson ES350 so I think he borrowed this guitar from the house band.

  41. V.... ....

It sucks that lots of people stole from classic black artists back in the day. Fuck, I mean Elvis, George Thorogood etc made a fucking living off of it.

  42. j.... g....

Damn...he was so cool...way ahead of his time!

  43. C.... S....

Man had no blueprint to follow. It was all unwritten.

  44. T.... D....

No mic, no amp, no piano, no bass, no drums, etc....

  45. T.... G....

Now I see exactly why Lennon was sued over this! In fact, Paul McCartney said that during the recording sessions he thought it was “a bit of a nick,” meaning he was stealing a Chuck Berry line. Thats okay, not okay stealing wording. Practically every rock N roll song IS a ‘nick’ from Chuck as he IS the originator of the art form

  46. c.... j....

i always hated seeing a guitar used as a visual prop.
if you're not going to play it, then just don't have it.

  47. J.... P....

    Fuck Elvis.

  48. p.... f....

is he singing and playing this live? Thinking of the no mic and no chord on guitar

    p.... f....

    Cord, not chord.

  49. B.... V....

Unnatural to see chuck play a small body guitar

  50. j.... ....

This sounds more like his song Maybelline than Come Together!

    j.... ....

Chuck really had only one song and played it 50 different ways.

  51. P.... L....

  56. i.... ....

Hahahahaha... the BEST **duck walk** I have ever seen. Chuck Berry was the original King of R&R. 👍

  57. J.... T....

This guy was so ahead of his time... look at those moves, listen to the music and the lyrics... 1956?? ...a real Master, the father of R'N'R.

  58. A.... K....

    The best

  59. s.... M....

    The number one

  60. E.... 8....

Michael Jackson pretty much owned every song every to exist. And he only covered one , come together. Giving the black community their song back.

    E.... 8....

He also called chuck the king of rock he gave little richard back rights to some of his songs too the hate they had for him was immense for owing sony.

  61. J.... C....

No encuentro parecido con come together

  62. D.... M....

The real king of rock and roll

  63. R.... K....

Dang. John Lennon even steals better than I do. Was there nothing he couldn't do?

    R.... K....

It’s not stealing wtf, everything was changed except one line

  64. B.... Z....

    Uživam v dobri glasbi...!

  65. j.... ....

Good artists copy; great artists steal.

  66. s.... ....

Doesnt sound like Come Together to me

  67. N.... A....

Chuck Berry I STILL listen to you every since the 60s. WE APPRECIATE YOU. RIP CHUCK BERRY. FROM DAVID RANSOME BASS GUITAR PLAYER IN WASHINGTON DC.

  68. D.... S....

    Gretch guitar.

  69. E.... C....

Lennon had an original song, the rest is just down to greedy lawyers. We are all influenced by what we have heard and we recycle tiny bits and pieces... that is evolution. C'mon folks, the opening to Abbey Road is on another plane of creativity...

    E.... C....

Ed Conley it’s a blatant rip off the phrasing is exactly the same.

  70. M.... J....

It's Johnny Johnson's piano that makes this tune listen closely

    M.... J....

Martin Jensen ; it was ages ago when I suddenly realized (on a CB tune), that piano guy is playing his a** off !! Read more about it and, yeah, Johnson deserves a TON of credit on a LOT of CB records. (Sadly, it was Johnson's band when he hired the young guitarist...and at some point became 'the hired hand,' but it was a steady lifetime job!)

    M.... J....

So true. That piano was so good.

  71. K.... C....

On “Come Together,” Lennon’s tune not only sounded plenty like Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me”; he actually quoted Berry with the “Here come old flat-top” bit.

That gave Berry’s music publisher an opening to sue, and Lennon’s attorneys agreed to settle after John admitted to Berry’s heavy influence.

  72. E.... S....

    oh my Yes Sir!!
    Such a Spirit

  73. j.... h....

no le veo igual a come together

  74. 1.... ....

Out of my mind on Saturday night
    1970 rollin' in sight
    Radio burnin' up above
    Beautiful baby, feed my love

  75. D.... T....

Is this song similar to Come together? I do not think!

  76. K.... ....

the real think star at 2:48 wow what a legend !!

  77. N.... 6....

Can't see it myself apart from here come old flat top.. he should have been flattered, but tried to cash in instead.

  78. p.... w....

Sorry, I do not have an absolute musical ear, but nothing to do with 'Come together'. Morris Levy just wanted to get some Beatles money.

  88. P.... ....

    Swagger.

  89. D.... B....

When The Beatles sample your song you know you're a legend.

    D.... B....

David Blues they also did a cover of one of his songs to so he isn’t just a legend he is a god.

  90. j.... d....

    R&B not R'n'R.

    j.... d....

If you were literate you would know that the original rock and roll was a mixture of r&b and guitar solos which branched off from the blues. I don't know what rock is today since it not popular anymore but this is the original form. It's not r&b.

  91. L.... H....

    Come tog.....

  92. J.... ....
