Saw Cheap Trick open for Uriah Help circa 1978 at the Paramount (Kirby) in Wilkes-Barre, PA. They didn't hit mainstream until years later. Still have Rick's guitar picks from that show. 40 years ago!

Hard to believe I first heard this song 40 years ago....

Ever figure out why you couldn't play these basslines when you were a kid? Because the fucker was phenomenal and he played custom Gibson 8 string basses made in kzoo mi. Nobody else would make them for him.

Awesome band.

What makes this better than the live version is the keyboards. Without them,this is a different song.

come out here and play it for me. X at the roxy comin' on tonight.

Forgot how good they were. Also did great cover of california man by the move.

Reminds me of bar hopping Chicago burbs and hitting Genes and Judes in River Grove. Great times.

Cheap Trick pays homage to Electric Light Orchestra on two songs: "ELO Kiddies" and "On Top Of The World." I heard that they were huge fans of the band, the Move.

California Man was written and performed by The Move

and the version of "California Man" on "Heaven Tonight" also includes a bit from the Move's "Brontosaurus" (the slow part in the middle) which Cheap Trick covered later on...

Hell yeah...in 1978 in Monterey California: I saw the State Capitol dome in Sacramento while on an army forced march at Fort Ord. Then listened to this right after-again. Heaven Tonight all right.

Utter greatness with a lot of humor. One of the best songs on Heaven Tonight.

It's not just a Chicago/Illinois thing. Cheap Trick is truly a great rock and roll band.

hot, slinky, forbidden song....   I was 16.

It's just a shame that no footage exists of these guys in smaller halls, off the paths beaten through the hinterlands of the upper central states.
They were loud, raw, frantic, devastating.
They really cared about those who were moved and touched by the power of their performances.
The vinyl bootlegs are dirty lenses through which we can glimpse vignettes from this history.
Go find 'em.
