Charlatans, The - Then Lyrics
I wanna bomb your submarines
You don't do anything for me
You were sometimes hard to find
You were never safe to be with, then
I'm a phenomena you see
You were sometimes hard to find
You were never safe to be with, then
Furious again, furious again
You don't do anything for me
We are a phenomena you see
You were sometimes hard to find
You were never safe to be with, then
Furious again, furious again
And you
You give it all to me
You never listen to a thing I said
You're furious, I'm glorious
You never hurt me that much

Charlatans, The Then Comments
Golden Age. No Minaj, Grande, Azalea. Real f__king music.
new find for me. just when I think I've heard it all..
great track.
Fuckin top top tune. The beat, the lyrics, the voice, the instrumental play, the bands image captures this generation perfectly. I miss the late 80s early 90s.
Fucking super
Northwich's best (and only band) CW9 dead dead good
I think the U.K. music scene was ready for another chance at cracking the U.S. in 90-91. Like New Order, The Cure and Depeche Mode did in the 80's. Then Nirvana came and brilliant bands like The Charlatans and Suede were ignored. A real shame. Everything went Grunge and full of misery.
I listened to this album for months on repeat. In America o had to special order it
God I love this SO much. Takes me all the way back to more carefree times. If only it was still 1990.
Hawkstone Park and Follies.
Shame has gone so soon...
30yrs ago such great memories I was 16 just left school the music the football were felt like we were at the center of the universe
Such a slept on and overlooked band. One of my very favorites. Timeless asf.
Love this band.....for 30 years....& never been able to see them live....so on my bucket list! Please come to Florida!!
Im going to Exeter uk in 2 weeks to see them, they are supporting noel gallagher, wish you could be there my friend
I was there,powderham castle, amazing
Great days
One of the finest singles of the 90s. Still the Charlatans’ most enigmatic and captivating moment.
My fave charlatans song
Forget the stone roses, these where the pioneers, of the 90s indie/mod revival I was there, I no,
Scooter Scooter I no two
This track gives me wood
Very nice
Drums and bass hold it down, solid...perfect...and that f-in keyboard line at about 2:50....omg....just the best, ever...
Total F-In Classic...end of....
Top notch tune
What has happened since Brit pop nothing memorable because the wrong people are now running the industry it all changed mid 90s nothing worth listening to now
Such a lovely time back then..reflecting brings a tear to the eye😪
Beautiful.... just beautiful x
This should be 10,000,000 views. Circa 1990 Used to listen to this in a railway station in Falmouth Cornwall with best mate, after going skywards on all that's available, Then.... And When....we couldn't get any higher, like the warriors we'd make our way back to Coney Island
When music and bands knew how to churn out classic tunes.i was a madchester nutter and well into the greater Manchester scene.I wasn't an oasis fan when they came out though.
Crying, not heard this for years... where did I go
Where did we all go honey? Next festival.
Your comment makes me sad.
Good Memories for me,nineties,parties,drinks...
Same here loved it in 1990 👌👍
We flew away then flew back to reality again. Lol. Great days, glad we lived it. 🏴👍
It's fun to play, keyboard player is fun, thanks, ;-)
Fuck. Nuff Said. Beyond brilliant.
a song written on bush for people on bush :)
First single I bought after years of only hip hop. Game changer. What a simply beautiful tune
Top Banana Song!
I never had the chance to experience the 90s ( because i was born in 2001) but i love its music and fashion and this song makes me feel like i missed out (which i know i did) in the greatest decade of all time. this is a rate TUNE!!!
My favourite Charlatans song without a doubt. Seen them live 3 times. Each gig a great experience, even though they didn't play this! ;-)
The Charlatans finest song

You don't do anything for me
You were sometimes hard to find
You were never safe to be with, then
You, you're nothing next to me
I'm a phenomena you see
You were sometimes hard to find
You were never safe to be with, then
Furious again, furious again
You don't do anything for me
We are a phenomena you see
You were sometimes hard to find
You were never safe to be with, then
Furious again, furious again
And you
You give it all to me
You never listen to a thing I said

Video shot at Hawkstone Park Follies. Top band!
Purely due to this video, I became very intrigued with the location while I was still in my late teens in Australia. When I came to england in 1996 I got my lovely Aunty to take me to Hawestone Park. She lived in Cheshire so we went for a day trip. RIP Aunty Jessie.
best charlatans tune ever. they sucked as a Britpop band. Madchester all the way.
takes me back to middle shed long hair 20" bottoms hooded tops adidas originals and fake i.d

Man it really does....between listening to Brit Pop and just getting turned on to rave music....what a time....what a scene
Belter.
My favorite album of all time is "Some Friendly" by this band , the Charlatans U.K. I could not wait for this LP to come out back in early October 1990 since I bought the CD single import for "The Only One I Know" 2 months prior and hearing their 2nd single "Then" on the radio for the past month. It had such an impact on me like no other album. What a trip...I would play the entire CD religiously for the next year. Definitely a rebirth of 60's-type psychedelia for me and a whole lot of others at that time... this was THE BAND for me.
Thank you TW, I actually still have all those CD's from back then except Northside. I do have The Darkside "All that Noise" w/the songs "Waiting for the angels" & "Guitar voodoo", rest of the album is kind of lame. I think that's awesome that quite a few of your gen can appreciate 90's alternative bands, speaking a few are making comebacks this past year(Slow Dive, Lush, Stone Roses, Verruca Salt, Kula Shaker) I still listen to collage radio (88.9 WMCX) even today because there is no better format of music that always keeps me young at heart. Whether it's early artist like Bowie,Velvet Underground, Ramones to current bands like Alt J, Wolf Alice, Phantagraham, at least it's not typical top 40 format. Cool pic of yer band by the way...Rock On.
They sort of lost this special niche they'd carved for themselves quite quickly...but this shows how unique it was...nigh on 30 years old and still stops you dead in your tracks...what a classic...
what a tune. never gets old
It all happend with THEN!!!!!! Absolute one of my faves indie will return!!!
One of their best :)
What a time that was...
Brilliant track
beast song
Memories.
Without a doubt, their finest moment, nothing that came after from them was better, in any way...25+ years on and it still doesn't sound in any way dated...
Ocean colour scene
Hypnotic, rhythmically beautiful and lyrically brilliant. This whole album was/is so solid all the way through every track. In the early 90s while we were being bombed with Grunge (not at all a bad thing!) and the beginning of the end for good Hip Hop/Rap (a very bad thing), this band had an extraordinary way of making me want more at the end of every song. Nothing could really compare to the Manchester sound of the early 90s. A very special time to be young and hearing this band!
Karla Pippo 👋 karla thank you for your kind and lovely reply and also for by so understanding i am from southern Ireland 🇮🇪 however when I was about 7 years old my parents moved to England the north lancashire that is why I knew were places where and also About the history of the whole music scene at the time as i was in my late teens and I was socializing in these and other places I would not change the fact that I grew up there as I t was the right place at the right time for me when I think back all good times for so many reasons. When they came to knocking down the hacienda so many people were waiting to be able to get a brick of the hac. That shows how much of an iconic place it had been i did not go. I have been back in ireland for about 16years it is roasting hot here i could live my life in this splended weather? Please mindyourself be happy 😊 meadbh v
Mark Steinke never a truer word spoken ahmen brother
@Maeve Murphy The Charlatans were NOT from Norwich.
Norwich is on the East side of the country & no where near Manchester.
They were from NORTHWICH & surrounding areas which is part of the Northwest & a few miles away from Manchester.
Hence the Charlatans were an indie band that got included in that whole Madchester vibe / scene .
I wish I was back there oh man want a youth need to meet women on the same wavelength lol
@Maeve Murphy wildly innacurate comment. I wouldn't pay any attention to this at all. Anthony Wild?? Don't you mean Wilson? The Charlatans were from Northwich and Tim Burgess originally from Salford. Do I need to point out the othe wild errors of your statement?
This song gives me goosebumps....so good...
Especially when the hammond organ starts playing.
Yeah me too

Rob Collins on the hammond left some pretty amazing sounds behind him.great band but i always felt they never quite got over robs passing, purely based on there early stuff which was genius.
et dire que j'avais l'album en cassette à l'époque. d'ailleurs, elle n'a pas resisté ...
Great tune.
Bought this album when the Manchester sound was out in full force!
