Chapin, Harry - Six String Orchestra Lyrics

The very day I purchased it,
I christened my guitar
as my monophonic symphony,
six string orchestra

In my room I'd practice late,
they'd leave me alone.
My mother said, "You're nothing yet,
to make the folks write home."

I'd play at all the talent nights,
I'd finish, they'd applaud.
Some called it muffled laughter,
I just figured they were odd.

So I went up for an encore,
but they screamed they'd had enough.
Or maybe I just need a group
to help me do my stuff.

And so I'd dream a bass will join me,
and fill the bottom in. And maybe now some lead guitar
so it would not sound so thin.
I need some drums to set the beat
and help me keep in time.
And way back in the distance,
some strings would sound so fine.

And we would play together,
like fine musicians should,
And it would sound like music,
and the music would sound good.
But in real life I'm stuck with
that same old formula,
me and my monophonic symphony,
six string orchestra.

Oh, I write love songs for my favorite girl
and sing them soft and slow.
But before I get to finish,
she says she has to go.
She's nice and says "Excuse me,
I've got to find a bar,
I think I need refreshment,
for I hear you play guitar."

Oh I sent a demo tape I made
to the record companies.
Two came back address unknown,
one came back C.O.D.

Of course I got form letters,
all saying pleasant things.
Like suggesting I should find a trade
where I would not have to sing.

And so I'd dream a bass will join me,
and fill the bottom in.
And maybe now some lead guitar
so it would not sound so thin.
I need some drums to set the beat
and help me keep in time.
And way back in the distance,
some strings would sound so fine.
And it would sound like music,
and the music would sound good.
But in real life I'm stuck with
that same old formula,
me and my monophonic symphony,
six string orchestra.

I've been taking guitar lessons,
but my teacher just took leave.
It was something about a break down,
or needing a reprieve.

I know I found my future,
so I will persevere
and hold onto my dream of
making music to their ears.

And so I'd dream a bass will join me,
and fill the bottom in.
And maybe now some lead guitar
so it would not sound so thin.
I need some drums to set the beat
and help me keep in time.
And way back in the distance,
some strings would sound so fine.
And it would sound like music,
and the music would sound good.
But in real life I'm stuck with
that same old formula,
me and my monophonic symphony,
six string orchestra.

Interesting how those couple instruments have such an impact on how it sounds

  6. S.... S....

people have no idea how brilliant this is, and how difficult it is to "pretend" you don't know how to play when you've been doing it professionally for so long...absolutely hilarious...

There are pivotal moments in our lives and seeing Harry Chapin live at the Uptown Theater in KCMO was such a moment for me. His songs spoke to me then and 40 plus years later, they still resonant with the same truth, joy and sorrow that they had the first time I heard them. He was the greatest composer, storyteller and humanitarian of his time and he remains forever in my heart. The world lost a shining star the day that Harry died.

  12. W.... ....

I prefer the one scooter sang on the muppets

    W.... ....

    although the lyrics are amazing

    W.... ....

Nah. Its cuter but this is better. The Muppet Version misses the best line.
"I think I need refreshment before I heard you play guitar"

    W.... ....

    I love Scooter's version

    W.... ....

Yup, Floyd has better bass tone IMO

  13. D.... H....

GREAT Song !!! Make me Laugh EVERYTIME !!!

    D.... H....

    I agree!

    D.... H....

    Same here.

  14. G.... F....

One dislike? I didn't realize Sauron had a YouTube account....

    G.... F....

    Why Sauron?

    G.... F....

Up to ten now.....not musically inclined maybe.

  15. s.... ....

Ah, humor. It reminds me of the classic "Junk Food Junkie."

    s.... ....

+sandinyourshoes ...I used to have THAT song...

    s.... ....

@Dennis Hoskins, was it a 45 that is long gone, or was it on an album?

    s.... ....

+sandinyourshoes .....Boy, to tell you the truth, I can't remember. It was back in the 70's and I smoked ALOT through that decade....LOL

    s.... ....

@Dennis Hoskins, well, what counts is that you relished the times and the music.  It's too bad that Har is gone.

  16. G.... ....

Eat your heart out, Eric Clapton. ^_^

    G.... ....

"Does it sound like Eric Clapton?" - Harry Chapin

    G.... ....

+Shinx7009 ....No It was joke, meaning  I'm playing as good as you Eric Clapton...

    G.... ....

He said that it's not a mis quote

  17. g.... S....

Brilliant!  Love it! I wish I would have been around for this stuff

  18. u.... ....

love harry, loved this song, but... although this was common back then, it still sounds so odd to hear the fake live performance effects, and the bizarre laugh-track and sing-along (the laugh track is more tone-deaf than the non-musical narrator)

    u.... ....

    +unclejohnthezef are those fake?

    u.... ....

+Shinx7009 no, it was recorded live in front of a crowd.

    u.... ....

    that what i thought!

    u.... ....

Harry would have laughed at that comment. He wasn't a studio bound hack who needed to phony up anything.

    u.... ....

yeah i was so confused when people said it was fake

  19. s.... ....

he may have paid dearly with personal life, or not. Never seemed about the money.

  20. o.... ....

He could even sound good sounding like someone who sucks!! :D :D

  21. F.... B....

Bollocks ! Harry Chapin hardly fell into the category of mediocre musicians who couldn't sound good without a band, in reality he's one of those great composers who can hold his own alone, just he and his acoustic. However it is an anthem to the millions who dream of being one of the greats with help from their world class band, that part of your into is correct.

  22. C.... G....

I love this song! If I could play guitar, I'd play it all the time.

  23. S.... ....

I dont listen this kind of music, but this is AWESOME!!!!
