Chambers, Kasey - Luka Lyrics

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud

They only hit until you cry
After that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown

Just don't ask me how I am [x3]

Chambers, Kasey Luka Comments
  1. S.... ....

The style of this song totally sounds like Kasey could have written it!

  2. M.... L....

your awesome Kasey I love you!

  3. A.... M....

The backing musicians also deserve credit for the quality of her songs

  4. c.... a....

I enjoyed it . the social commentary on society is clearly screaming in this song. Don't care who sang it before if Casey had not sang it I would not have heard it. I think its beautiful.

  5. M.... ....

  10. A.... ....

Don't mind Chambers but I prefer the original for this song sorry

  11. R.... ....

I bet she rocks the hell out of this on karaoke night.

  12. c.... ....

More a forgery than a cover; try the Suzanne Vega original - don't argue.

The YouTube context complicates the discussion about the covering of the original song, musically, since we have a video to see.  Covers can be delicate matters of musical and visual intent.  Kasey did a fine job on a very challenging cover, of this classic, as interpreted with her musical style and wonderfully interesting voice.  The arrangement still keeps relatively true to the original.  The use of the many guitar harmonic effects honor the 1987 version arrangement (maybe unintentionally) with a different instrument.  I can understand people not enjoying this cover if they don't like Kasey's style.  She maintains the seriousness of the subject matter and possibly adds more obvious visual metaphor (blind man) for those not listening closely.
I was not a fan of the original 80's version.  It had a darker tone (especially given the coloring of the final video print) which may have been the point, but was musically less interesting.  Kasey has a stronger presence of delivery in this video compared to Vega's original.
If I were the producer, I'd have cut the camera shots of Kasey's shoes and leg tights (though she looks great).  They distract from the theme, IMO.  This could be an attempt to freshen the visuals without trying to reinvent the original concept (again, it is a cover).  Otherwise, Kasey's answer-seeking and semi-disgusted expressions keep the production serious, especially in the closing shot.  Well done.
I'd like to hear Joan Osborne take a crack at this one.

  14. J.... K....

Gag.  Suzanne Vega's version was much better.

  15. A.... D....

The original was called "Luka" and it was about violence against children. But you otherwise got it right.

  16. l.... ....

This is what this song is about

  17. l.... ....

" A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in front of my building, and there was one of them, whose name was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other children. I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. And his character is what I based the song Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child—in real life I don't thi

  18. o.... ....

always lioved kasey but the dam ring under her lips suck

  19. C.... J....

No, this song is about child abuse!!!

  20. c.... ....

    good song, horrible video

  21. R.... ....

no, i think the song is actually about violence of some kind against children. the character 'Luka' in the song is a young boy.

  22. W.... ....

i totally agree at least u know a good singer when u hear it unlike some of these other idiots

  23. W.... ....

will people stop complaining if u dont like it press dislike and go to a different vid
    Kasey is a brilliant singer

  24. S.... ....

I believe the blind man wishes he was deaf...

  25. T.... J....

Ugh, a beautiful song, totally butchered.

  26. T.... ....

@illusionsfan1 Obviously this is only my interpretation I could be entirely wrong but I believe he's not actually "Luka" (which I assume is how you've interpreted the clip)

  27. T.... ....

@johnbonnell I believe the blind man is more a symbolism of those who sort of merely see but do nothing about abusive cases whether it's because they can't or because they choose not too. The kids toys are most likely more the evidence of something has happened so the blind man touching this is actually sort of "seeing" this evidence yet he's not (in his case it's cause he actually CAN'T see it) but in most everyday circumstances it's because "we" choose NOT to. If that makes sense?

    T.... ....

Thank you so much. This can be benefit for my paper!

  28. s.... ....

I loved this cover even though I had never heard the original, I think that Kasey was great as usual and I understand that everyone has their own opinions so I won't say too much in regards to the comments stating that Kasey looked uncomfortable singing this song, well she has been through abuse before as stated in her autobiography. Love you Kasey :)

  29. A.... L....

I think Kasey does a very good cover of this song! And I still LOVE her voice =) -3 she looks really pretty in this video=)

  30. k.... ....

Love the shoes and leg coverings at the beginning

  31. T.... V....

nice cover, video not so and not quite sure what the guy is supposed to be doing.

  32. R.... H....

i never cared for the song back then and I like it less now. Sorry...

  33. C.... J....

    She sounds like Minnie Mouse!

  34. T.... ....

@katewinslet1912 you should check her hubby out he could also sing the phonebook.... I dunno who I'm more jealous of.... maybe the kids.... and Kasey and Shane to sing me to sleep every night... I'd die happy haha

  35. C.... ....

I think this would have been okay as an album track. Not really single material. Just seems a little off the mark.

  36. A.... J....

I did not cry in Suzanne Vega's version, but I did in yours. One of the problems with Vega's recording is that it is fascinating more than evocative. The mix of the haunting lyrics (harder to understand) with the melody made Luka a great song! However, most people hear the melody and beat and are happy! However, here, the clarity is more burning. I was abused and when it reached, "you don't argue anymore," I broke into sobs! You added something people don't want in this song: the lyrics count!

  37. C.... S....

Couldn't finish this song :/ I loved her back in the day when she did The Captain and Barricades and Brick Walls but I think after Wayward Angel her music started going downhill. She looks awkward/uncomfortable in this clip though doesn't she

  38. s.... ....

    Nice one Kasey!

  39. M.... ....

I've been following Kasey since The Captain and Shes still going strong. One of my fav songs and I'm glad you did it Kasey, displayed more of the sadness of the lyrics. Brilliant job!!

  40. J.... S....

    @karana808 Suzanne Vega

  41. k.... ....

Who is the original artist of this song?
    I Love kasey...

  42. a.... ....

Cant say i am a fan of this version. The arrangement is too similar to the original and because it is a personal song i think it should be different.
I also prefer Suzannes timid approach to singing for this. I always thought that was what Luka would sound like.

  43. J.... N....

Kasey sounds great. But Suzanne's version is a classic.

  44. J.... G....

    OMG! YES!

  45. W.... S....

Great rendition of a very dark Suzanne Vega hit.

  46. m.... ....

I LOVE THE FLOWER WALLS. but nothing else lol. i'm no hater though ^_^

  47. L.... C....

Love it!!! You look gorgeous Kasey xxx

  48. A.... J....

Great cover of Suzanne Vega's hit from 1987

  49. N.... J....
