Chaka Khan - Roll Me Through The Rushes Lyrics

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes just like Moses

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Guide me to the new woman who waits
Current, leave me on the banks
By the cottage
Wher we will dine with silver cups
And golden plates

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes just like Moses

I've prepared for my last journey
You know I've worked all my life
To make this basket strong
But a woman alone on a river
She can't stay in the water too long

I've been chilled, I've lost my will
And I've stayed away from rivers
Much too long
I really must stay in this dirty dirty city
Till I found out that my strength was gone

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes just like Moses
Just like Moses

Make my journey, make it short in space
Let me lose this hardness that I got now, Lord
Water, wash away all traces of hate
I will do what you say
If you just show me how, river

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes just like Moses
Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes
Just like Moses on the Nile

River, river (sail)
River, river (sail)
River, river (sail)
River, river (sail)

Love this rendition, does anyone know what it means?

    C.... H....

It's about be woman who is prepared to die and receive her reward in Heaven. The title and lyrics are akin to God parting the Red Sea for Moses and his people to cross! She prays her crossing will cleanse and purify her making her whole and complete upon reaching the other side ( I hope that helps 😉)

@ShyeNYC Thank you, God bless you!

Thank you and your welcome. That was my personal interpretation of this song. I've never heard Chaka speak on its origins. The book of Exodus Chapter 2 is worth checking out as well. Peace & Blessings to you.

It is so amazing I haven't listened to this song in over 25 years and when the singing began the words just sprang out of my mouth like I just heard it yesterday. I really shouldn't be surprised though because 99.9% of the songs I ever listened to, grooved to, danced to, chilled to, partied with and yes sometimes even cried through, by Chaka  I absolutely loved at the time and still love today. I believe she  sang all her songs from a full throttle heart. That's why she gets her due props for such lovely, awesome lifework. Thanks God for giving us such a treasured jewel. Lord how her music sparkles and delights so many hearts. Thanks Chaka.

  22. C.... P....

Chaka one of my most favorite female vocalist girlfriend can sang. Good luck on your R& R nomination well deserved.

I remember as a kid being very nervous that CK was coming out with a solo record--mostly because I loved Rufus and was afraid it wouldn't be as good. Boy was I wrong! I played this record until the grooves were nubs! This song, along with "Some Love" were my favorites. The other song I recall from right around this time was Labelle's "Isn't it a Shame." 70's soul doesn't get the recognition it should. There was some amazing stuff then!

  24. S.... A....

    Awesome

  25. T.... ....

Chaka is defintely in the Top 5 of Best Singers Ever. Sorry, pop princes & media darlings. #chakakhan PS: Think Whitney's CK session w mom is song "Our Love's In Danger". Cissy & Luther did a lot of sessions w CK's l8 gr8 producer #ArifMardin.

    T.... ....

You are right! Our Love Is In Danger..you hear Whitney real good, lol. God I wanted to be a session singer

  26. M.... B....

  27. T.... K....

Chaka Khan is worlds greatest singer bar none and the proof is all over You Tube!!!

  28. D.... K....

Don't know where ya got that, but the LP gives background vocal credits to Cissy Houston, David Lasley (who co-wrote this song) and Hamish Stuart (of Average White Band fame).

  29. s.... ....

This is where Whitney learned how to sing as well as the Church!!

    s.... ....

Yep. She tells you her dam self in many interviews

  30. E.... M....

    Nick Ashford as well

  31. I.... ....

  33. S.... J....

    Words escapre me.....

  34. b.... ....

    Classic Chaka..

  35. E.... M....

    Sing Whitney!

    E.... M....

Erika McQueen Um this is Chaka !!!Where is Whitney in this song ?????????? Please tell me where??? The only background singers on this track are Chaka,Luther ,Hamish Stuart,Alan Gorrie,David Lasely & Cissy Houston !!!Smh!!!
I know you Whitney fanatics adore her so much ,but please stop giving her credit she doesn’t deserve!!!
She was a great singer and I like Whitney!!! But please don’t get it twisted,Chaka is who Whitney looked up to because she knew the shit that Chaka does takes more than 7 or 8 different singers at 1 time to do!!!

    E.... M....

Really Whitney. Sorry whitney was ok and all but a bunch of these sistahs are just as good if not better..Especially more soulful

    E.... M....

You think it’s Whitney but it’s her mother Cissy...

  36. S.... ....

    Feel it in my soul
