Celtic Woman - Carrickfergus Lyrics

I wish I was in Carrickfergus
Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
The deepest ocean for my love to find

But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
Neither have I wings to fly
If I could find me a handsome boatsman
To ferry me over to my love and die

My childhood days bring back sad reflections
Of happy times spent so long ago
My childhood friends and my own relations
Have all passed on now like melting snow

But I'll spend my days in endless roaming
Soft is the grass, my bed is free
Ah, to be back now in Carrickfergus
On that long road down to the sea

I'll spend my days in endless roaming
Soft is the grass, my bed is free
But I am sick now, and my days are numbered
Come all you young men and lay me down

Celtic Woman Carrickfergus Comments
  1. G.... P....

    I love your music.

  2. A.... B....

    Very pretty, great job!

  3. J.... S....

What a voice. In my opinion her voice is the best of the Celtic Women. And the rest of them are great, but there is something a little extra in her voice. Flawless, perfect voice.

  4. J.... S....

Oh my God!! This is the most perfect lady singer I have ever heard! What a talent. Now let's see Beyonce or Nikki MA-nage( or however you spell it) top this lady.

  5. H.... G....

Strange, so few commenters get that this is about death. Carrickfergus is the other side. She has lost everyone and everything and only has memories. She is ready to go, and wants someone to guide her across.

  6. M.... M....

  12. D.... B....

This is hands down the most beautiful version of this song.

  13. L.... J....

I like this version, and Agne G's version as well.

  14. J.... P....

Thank you, Orla! I love this song and your performance.

  15. T.... B....

The Lady Fallon would make a perfect actress, just look at her facial expressions on a song and imagine if she were acting. The land of music could not afford to lose her voice, however.

  16. P.... C....

    Ultra boring

  17. P.... B....

My dear dad had me sing this with him a few days before he passed. Rest in Peace Dad miss and love you always. <3

  22. m.... ....

i was there when she was playing that song and i almost cried cause of how heart touching the song was

    Orla's voice is lovely.

  24. M.... A....

    Just in the nolstagia!!!

  25. J.... L....

What a fantastic talent! Orla is one of the best vocalists ever to sing as Celtic Woman.

  27. J.... S....

    Carrickfergus

  28. M.... B....

    beautiful

  29. A.... M....

What type/ brand harp is she using? Does anyone know?

    A.... M....

    +April Mitchell

Salvi Livia but could be a copycat shape

    A.... M....

Whatever the harp is, it is not actually played on this video. It's part was recorded on a synthesizer and obviously is a playback during the video shooting. Not fair, IMHO.

    A.... M....

Philipp Barsky My harp teacher said the same thing. So disappointing... This video is what made me choose the harp in the first place, because I wanted to play and sing this song like Orla... :( But my teacher said this soundtrack is most probably being played on a concert harp. You can even see one in the orchestra towards the end...

  30. .... ....

Miss u orla, but maybe when i visit eriann in the summer i can find u.
    And listen to u sing.

  32. J.... C....

She can sing and play an instrument at the same time. Love it. Wish I could.

    J.... C....

Not quite. The harp's sound is not real. It's the pre-recorded synth.

    J.... C....

    @Philipp Barsky ...oh.

    J.... C....

Philipp Barsky Question, how can you tell? Because this scene was from a live concert, so it seems far-fetched that it could be faked.

  33. D.... ....

Takes you to a different place and time

  34. R.... g....

what an amazing voice and song love this and celtic women.

  35. T.... T....

SHE PLUCKETH SO SWEETLY ON HER HARP !

  36. J.... K....

She has never played a harp in her puff what a fake shame to spoil such a lovely voice but is that even hers ?

    J.... K....

It is her voice, but it's not live, sadly:(

    J.... K....

+Arc Kocsog Is she singing this dead, then?  Of course it's not live, you idiot, she recorded this in 2007.  Once a concert has been recorded then it can never be live again.  You, too, need to get the government to send your check.

  37. P.... B....

    So sad, but so beautiful!!!

  38. S.... F....

Great version of a marvelous song but what a pity, that she didn't sing the full version of the text. So I like the Version of Orla's CD more.

  39. s.... ....

I love Celtic Woman, their music is so peaceful...I especially love songs like this because it reminds me of the sea, where I wish I was right now. c:

    s.... ....

Well, Ireland is a very sea-influenced place.....

  40. G.... J....

At 3:52 that woman's face says it all. A truly wonderful and heartwarming rendition by Órlagh.

    G.... J....

i was there and my mom cried cause of how heartwarming it was and Orlagh dod a amazing job

    G.... J....

@Schafer Olsen her real name is Órlagh Fallon

  41. n.... ....

I don't like that she censors stuff at the end. Still, really beautiful rendition. Amazing.

    n.... ....

@***** I was actually talking about the fact that she replaces words about death with euphemisms.

    n.... ....

@***** The version I know has different words. In fact, there are a few videos of choruses singing this piece with such words. I don't know if she's using a different version or something. Who knows...

  42. D.... L....

This song makes me feel home sick...even though I'm at home...

  43. R.... V....

This song is so calming and lovely; I love the harp

  44. S.... S....

  50. W.... ....

Such a beautiful yet sad song, very well sung. You find yourself wishing you could take them home before they pass. Such beautiful music the Irish have.

  51. R.... V....

    i cried :(

  52. S.... H....

I sang this in the satb choir in All State Chorus. It was amazing. Especially the Tenor Solo part. Everyone in the audience was crying. But during rehearsal at my school everyone was commenting on how I had already memoriZed the song even before I had gotten the music. So I was just like " I'm Irish. I have heard this song sung so many times you wouldn't even believe." This song has so much meaning behind the lyrics and it is much better than most music you bear today.

  53. w.... ....

    its in northern Ireland.

  54. s.... ....

I don't know where Carrickfergus is but I after that song I'd love to go there!

  55. a.... e....

the most beautiful interpretation of carrickfergus, EVER! kudos to Ms. Orla Fallon!

  58. B.... ....

    So nice

  59. a.... ....

Jackie Evancho sings and plays the piano and plays the violin. Her version of Carrickfergus at the age of 9 is definitive. But that is not to take away from this version, it is beautiful.

  60. I.... R....

Like if endless ocean brought you here :D

    I.... R....

    Iona Rainford-Miller I liked 😁😑😋😋

    I.... R....

    Iona Rainford-Miller yup

    I.... R....

    Same!!!

  61. b.... ....

She's not lipsyncing. She's just that good!

  62. S.... ....

I posted that a over month ago and thus far you've been the only one to respond, so unless your "3...2...1..." is counting months that doesn't seem to be what's happening.

  63. M.... ....

    Religious debate in 3......2.....1.....

  64. E.... ....

It's not even the same lyrics on the album. The "drunk today and seldom sober" isn't even on the CD. She's not lipsyncing.

  65. B.... ....

    Beautiful. Plain and simple :)

  66. A.... W....

You can see her breath match what she sings, as well as see that she inhales perfectly to match what we hear. If she was lip-syncing, that most likely wouldn't be the case.
Also, it's possible for performers to create identical/near-identical performances, with enough practice, which I'm sure she gets.

Not saying there's no way she's lip-syncing, but chances are that she isn't.

  67. j.... ....

She is definitely lipsyncing here. This is identical to the performance on the album (which isn't live). I looked it up on Skype and compared. That's alright, I have the song on repeat anyway. Very beautiful.

  68. S.... ....

I don't get it when people say she sings like an angel. You've never heard an angel sing. You have heard her sing. It would make more sense to say that an angel sings like her, if you ever hear one, if they do in fact exist, and if they do in fact sing like her. Maybe they squawk. You never know.

    S.... ....

It's an expression, you silly twit, like saying you're going down the road when you are actually going uphill. And you stole the Angels squawking from a famous atheist, the gay English one I believe. Hawkins or Dawkins or some such kins.

  70. E.... ....

I'm from Galicia, celtic land too (Spain) and I think the same thing!
    Untraditiona and ultra commercial!
THIS IS NOT IRISH FOLK, only mainstream music!
Sounds good (too processed and too much reverb), but the woman sings good, I admit. But this isn't a style that's I like it.

    E.... ....

Although this is a performance, the actual style of singing is not so very different from what you’d hear sung by any amateur singer who grew up, as I did, familiar with the song from family and friends. The song is at its most poignant and lovely sung simply, with the only embellishments whatever traditional grace notes a particular singer chooses to add. (Personally, I like to hear/sing quite a lot of these, but each amateur singer will have their own style of being either sparing or generous with these very traditional and distinctively Celtic ‘twiddles’ depending, in part, on where or from whom they first heard the song.) Because, in essence, it’s such a very simple song, it’s hard to sing it well as a public performance but I think it’s done here as well as it can be under such circumstances.

  71. H.... H....

    perfect

  72. K.... H....

    Her voice defies all description.

  73. s.... ....

WOW! i love orla. her voice is so distinct.

  81. L.... ....

    Beautiful violin accompaniment!

  82. A.... ....

Lovely ... sweet .. and I pity whoever had to tune that harp for an outdoor setting ... ^_^

  83. K.... ....

U can c her breath! She must b freezing!

  84. c.... ....

for those people who think these girls or RD and LOTD are money making or only care about fancy dresses and such: you're probably right, but thanks to these shows Ireland and the "Celtic movement" are back on the map with much more strength than some years ago, and more and more people become interested in what you call to be the "true" essence of the Irish culture...

  85. g.... ....

She's the perfect Irish singer, a great voice!

  86. S.... ....

    @2SilverRings It's the best part!

  87. u.... ....

Absolutely beautiful voices. Why couldnt the channel been taken forwarded?

  88. f.... ....

No offense to Charlotte Church, but my girl Ms. Fallon wails like no other songbird ever did singin this tune. I'm an arrogant brutish S.O.B. and this song melts me right away every time. Cheers to you!

  89. U.... ....

@Duffter You are crazy this is ten times more haunting and beautiful than that other crap.

  90. S.... M....

@Duffter what do you call riverdance and lord of the dance if not self indulgent and money making

  91. S.... ....

We just finished singing this song for a Choir Contest. CHS CHOIR RULES!!!

  92. L.... C....

    Perfeito!

  93. G.... ....

I'm going to have to admit that I teared up at the end.

  94. S.... ....

A very awesome version of a fantastic song. Orlagh is simply a goddess but what a pity that there is one verse missing ("In Kilkenny there is reported....."). On here first CD "The water is wide" you will find the longer - an a little bit better - version of this song.

  95. p.... ....

i wish all the celtic women would go live somewhere else,,,you my dear are killing this song .

  96. k.... ....

however good this is (and it's vrey good) - it's not a patch on any recording of it by Van Morrison. he really gets the raw beauty of it

  97. U.... ....

@petarphyle Are you insane. Yes you are.
