Celtic Woman - At The Céili Lyrics

Tonight we're going to meet some lads
Us girls are dressed up gaily
And we'll be dancing 'til the dawn
We're going to the Céili

The lads they come from miles around
From Ennis and Kilmaley
To show us all their fancy steps
We're going to the Céili

They're playing tunes on everything
From pipes to ukulele
It sounds so good you can't sit down
We're dancing at the Céili

All the boys we love so well
So handsome, young and charming
They're in New York and Boston now
They should be home here farming
My own true love has sailed away
To be an endless rover
'Cause times are tough and he must leave
To start a new life over

He writes me letters every week
To say how much he's slavin'
And he promises that he'll be back
Before the hay needs savin'
But it's hard to love somebody
That you're not in touch with daily
So I'm looking for somebody new
Tonight down at the Céili

The winter nights are long and hard
And time goes by so slowly
I wish my true love he was here
And in his arms I'd roll
He'd whisper tender words of love to me
And kiss my lips so sweetly
And quickly I'd surrender to
His manly charms completely

He writes me letters every week
To say how much he's slavin'
And he promises that he'll be back
Before the hay needs savin'
But it's hard to love somebody
That you're not in touch with daily
So I'm looking for somebody new
Tonight down at the Céili
So I'm looking for somebody new
Tonight down at the Céili

I hope I meet someone tonight
Who'll make my heart beat fast
A handsome man with laughing eyes
Who smiles as he walks past
And when they play an old-time waltz
He'll twirl me round the floor
And promise me that I will be
His girl forevermore
His girl forevermore
His girl forevermore
And promise me that I will be
His girl forevermore

I'm somewhat in a bother
That is really quite alarming
I have two lads pursuing me
And each of them is charming
One of them is dark and poor
One fair with lots of money
I don't know which one to choose
The flower or the honey

What on earth am I to do
It's driving me half crazy
Tonight I'll make my mind up
When I see them at the Céili

To be a poor man's wife will be
A life of washin' dishes
When a rich man's wife will surely have
Great luxury and riches

In comfort how I know
It wouldn't be too hard to wallow
And being poor is not much fun;
Which one should I follow?

What on earth am I to do
It's driving me half crazy
Tonight I'll make my mind up
When I see them at the Céili

I've been lucky I've found a lad who's handsome and a neighbor

And me I've met a decent man whose friendship I will savor

And me I've made my choice as well and in no way was it easy
But I'd rather have a man I love
Then be a rich man's lady

And that is how the story ends
May true love never fail me
We got ourselves three men tonight
And we met them at the Céili

In short, guys: do NOT just SAY you're off working hard for the money. Actually show your significant other that you can give them a good life. NOT a shallow one where money's the only thing that matters but one that's more than empty words with naught but promises of future earnings.

The song says it all: the first guy is off, being an "endless rover" who writes regularly and promises he'll be back to help work on the farm before the hay needs saving. He promises he's working hard to make plenty of money. We don't hear about him actually sending much, if any, of that money to his supposedly true love. And since he's been gone so long, she is beginning to worry that he will never return. Which IS an understandable worry. We all worry that our significant other is off galavanting with someone else, spending all the money, and/or just not doing what they're supposed to. So the woman goes off to find someone else who can be trusted to be what she needs and hopefully provide her with what she wants and needs out of life besides working. Whether that's companionship [love being someone you're with regularly, friendship she will savor], lots of money [obvious], or just that good old fashioned salt of the earth hard work with someone you love [last solo voice bit about being a poor man's wife], it doesn't matter. So long as that person is actually following through on their end of the deal instead of writing letters about how much he's 'slaving'.

No, I'm not sexist against men. I am merely going by what the song says and a moral it implies. Not the only one but the one I, a particular male, took from it. If your opinion's different, that's all good. So long as we can respect our mutual right to have different opinions.

Wow... I never understood that before... Thank you for explaining!

this is unfaithful hoes the song!

    p.... g....

she dumped him bc he didnt see her enough so.... no

    p.... g....

    Uhm... No?
He was not paying her enough attention and she left with him for another.

Being unfaithful would be remaining with him whilst sleeping with other, which she didn't do.

it's not "Venice and Comaley" but "Ennis and Kilmaley",two irish cities =)

  10. D.... S....

"In his arms I go" -> In his arms I roll
"I only need someone tonight" (???) -> I hope I meet someone tonight
"The harp may play in old time worlds" (??!?!) -> And when they play an old-time waltz
"I'm somewhat ill and bothered. That is really quite alarming" -> I'm somewhat in a bother that is really quite alarming.
"Be true and never fail me" -> "May true love never fail me"
