Cash, Johnny - White Girl Lyrics

I am stunned and I am broken and my head is in my hand
For she who said she love me will not wed an Indian man
My Gods who were wild ridden stand quiet by my side
For although I loved her she would not be my bride
Oh goodbye softly sweet one it was splended while it ran
Goodbye my bitter white girl I'll forget you if I can
She came up to the pueblo with her bright blonde hair
They told me not to love her but I did not care
She took me to her parties she carried me around
And I was a proud one the tallest man in town
For I found great wonder all wrapped in brilliant dreams
I held her strong but gentle as kings have held their queens
I learned to drink strong whiskey as she took me here and there
Until life without my whiskey I could not bear
Oh goodbye softly sweet one...

Well when she came to leave me she took me by the arm
And she said she loved me and would not do me harm
But she would not marry not an Indian she said
She thanked me for my offer and I wished that I was dead
Now I'm back among my people and they are kind to me
Although I'm sad with staggers when I drink that tough whiskey
For I've been a white girl's pet a captive Indian
Shown off and discarded just a drunk who might have been
Oh goodbye softly sweet one...
Goodbye softly sweet one...

Cash, Johnny White Girl Comments
  1. H.... P....

Enjoying this song despite all the white people claiming cherokee heritage below 😂😂 aight we all know your grandma a quarter cherokee sure yea.

  2. D.... B....

Disgusting miscegenationist. YOU WILL NOT REPLACE US.

  3. E.... ....

This is long after the barn door closed, and it doesn't do a damn bit of good but...but to the Native  American people, I'm sorry.

  4. l.... ....

..good stuff - wrote by peter lafarge, an native indian...

  5. O.... T....

    What a man.

  6. R.... H....

I have very little indian blood in me well except in my heart I am 100% Indian there - Johnny Cash

    R.... H....

Indian is a racist term invented by Christopher Columbus who mistook the Native Americans for Indians as he thought he was in India. So please it's Native Americans not Indians

  7. E.... ....

Then he got Billy Jack to set her straight.

  8. S.... L....

    chicken sandwich

  9. G.... ....

This one little love sick song/

  10. g.... p....

Me, my father and grandfather can all tell this story except with aboriginal blokes instead of Indians.

  11. M.... N....

I grew up listening to this album.

  12. B.... C....

The whole album was an awesome production for the native American people!

    B.... C....

Brian Charette for native people in general to be honest. I'm an aboriginal Australian and I love listening to this album because I relate it to stuff my people and I have gone through.

  13. P.... H....

If John Wayne could sing, he would sound like this.

    P.... H....

He could. Look up singing sandy. His character in an old movie.

    P.... H....

    but then he would just slaughter all the red people. :-{

    P.... H....

    Wayne hated indians

  14. D.... M....

tall kings in a bitter land

  15. a.... p....

    GREAT SINGER. .

    a.... p....

    Not great, the greatest.

  16. P.... I....

she didnt want to marry him so he pulled the race card?

    P.... I....

Liam Cunliffe no she wouldnt marry him cause he is indian. he was used to show off in a sence. so no, he did not pull the race card. for futher evidence listen to the lyrics of the song.

    P.... I....

    @genuine penguin productions
    i am disagree

    P.... I....

you're way over thinking this. Songs are about emotions, and they ain't logical. You can dissect this song if you want and talk about what someone should and shouldn't feel, but try telling it to somebody that just had their heart broken

    P.... I....

Another 'hurt' white boy attempting to deflect the content of a song because it doesn't, by default, portray white folk as necessarily good.

Racism against Indigenous people shouldn't even require such an explicit explication at this point....It's understanding should be common sense. Light skinned white folk have a several century his-story of constructing a repressive apparatus and then blaming the victims that they mowed over.

    P.... I....

    Have mercy on Liam Cunliffe,

his whole life he has been brainwashed by cultural Marxism. So the only thing he can do is deconstructing without enjoying.

  17. c.... p....

I have never heard this before, Its amazing.I miss Johnny so much. I hope I keep finding songs I haven't heard.

    c.... p....

They said he took a genetics test and found out that he actually wasnt, but still supported the Native struggle anyways

  26. C.... B....

All these songs from the album "Bitter Tears' are dedicated to Native Americans. One
of my fave albums, altho Johnny Cash has never had a song I didn't like. Cash was Native'American himself,,,,,,,,,, what a tribute! Thank you Mr. Cash for your legacy.

  27. C.... ....

@downtowncowtown Yeah, my spouse is a pro, too. He just got a new black leather jacket that way!

  28. S.... S....

I'm a southern-born American...that means I've no idea WHAT the hell my lineage is, except that Native American is in the mix, my great-grandmother on my maternal side looks 100% , great-grandfather (her husband) looks like EVIL Mark Twain! lol NOBODY smiled for "photo-portraits" in those days. Best guess would be Cherokee, who ruled here before "Trail of Tears."

  29. K.... ....

    @maviowl what a mix! i'm cherokee,german,english and serbian. even when i was a kid i liked johnny cash.now,as i'm a bit older;i love johnny cash.

  30. C.... ....

I found a different version of this record in the trash on the street in NYC in the '70s. I became a punk/New Wave influence and dang if someone didn't steal this record from me! Thank you so much for posting, I kind of thought I was imagining all this and people have ridiculed me. I left the USA to give it back to the First People. I am now in Europe. Uprated.

BTW to all the native Indian people and those mixed with native Indian bloodlines, my parents are from Jamaica, but the black people are not the first people of Jamaica, it was the Arawak Indians.
